Awesome! I know in the video I showed putting the "thick" rubber o-ring in the plastic water pump housing for the Alpha 1 Gen 1, it will actually slide onto the spline and sit on top of the water pump housing not inside! Let me know how you make out!Good luck and thank you for watching!

Thank you. It's nice when everything is as it should be. Mine wasn't unfortunately. The water tube was stuck in the upper half,is that where supposed to be,the plastic water tube was crushed and partially melted,wtf? But the impeller looked fine. I assume someone screwed up installing the last one

I've seen that happen before that's why I grease the hell out of everything, some people don't like the amount I use but they also don't do maintenance on as many as I do lol, make sure if you took it apart to grease well and replace all rubber o-rings and even if your impeller is nice looking save yourself a headache and replace it every couple years! Well worth the 35 bucks!!! Thank you for watching and have a great summer!!!!

Why do you want all of that grease flowing through your cooling system? Anything that coats your cooling system will make it less efficient. You're better off with dish detergent or some sort of soap. Great video just hold the grease. Gaskets should go on clean as well or gasket adhesive. Grease will deteriorate the gasket.

You can use dish detergent or soap but I use marine grease the cooling system is a closed cast iron runs around engine for cooling then out the back and with so much water and heat from your engine you dont need to worry about anything sticking around or gumming anything up it is all out the boat after your first ride! I do use alot of grease on purpose a little overkill lol but I learned from past experiences better too much then too little or none at all, your putting all this work into it the last thing you want is to melt break or tear any of your new parts! Like I said I do go overboard but never had any issues! Dish soap would work good for the impeller if that's what you use, I wouldn't recommend it on the shift shaft you need actual grease on there, thank you for watching!👍

The smooth side goes against the shaft! Put a little grease on it to hold it in place! The impeller is notched out to accept what your calling the ribbed side ,its the only way you can put it on they mate together! Thank you for watching and good luck!👍😊

Definitely don’t need all that grease water is all the lubricant you need . As long as you have a water hose and muffs or in the lake you don’t have to worry about dry starts… never start the boat without water even if it’s only a few seconds…

The replacement set comes with a bunch, you only need the ones that I pointed out in the video! That's just how they come unfortunately and make people crazy trying to figure it out!

Great thorough video! Got my new impeller kit installed successfully. Was wondering if you know and could confirm what goes on top of the shift shaft assembly? I installed a new shift shaft bushing assembly but I don't think the proper items were on top it. The diagram I have shows three separate items. I have an 1988 alpha 1 - Gen 1. Not sure about the (R), (MR), or (Counter Rotation) notation I see in the Mercury Marine parts catalog.

I followed your video and it helped so much seeing the impeller installed. But I didn't use any sealent on the gaskets. I was wondering if you did off camera? Or is sealent not needed?

No you don't need any sealant on the gaskets you could put a little grease to keep the gaskets in place but sealant is not necessary! Thank you for watching!👍😊

Don't forget to put the thick rubber o-ring on top of the impeller housing, the black o- ring gasket on the shaft, the small oil seal gasket that goes between the upper and lower and the water tube on if you are putting yours back on to your upper! I didnt do this in the video as i explained because this lower was gonna sit out for a while and i didnt want those parts dry rotting or falling off!👍😊

@floridagirlxoxo5225 that definitely sounds like a fuel issue, pull your gas line that goes to the carburetor and put it in an empty soda bottle or something and crank it over if fuel goes into the bottle then the carburetor needs to be taken apart and cleaned really well! Definitely a fuel issue from what you told me!!!!

Next time turn the prop (leave it in forward) and it'll be easier plus more torque to work with than turning the shaft.

Need some help. My lower unit bearings went. I bought an entire alpha 1 gen 1 stern drive. Took the lower unit off. E everything is the same except it has the nipple on top of the shaft and the top bearing is different. What would this be? Thank you

From what I know the MC-1 lower unit and Alpha 1 lower unit can both be used on a MC-1 upper! I've never heard of a upper Alpha 1 using a MC-1 lower because of that nipple? Are you sure the upper is a Alpha 1 and not another MC-1? Google the serial numbers and it will tell you what year and type the sterndrive is and let me know!

Rib side is facing out away from the shaft. As far as I can tell after your video mine should be ready to put on the upper. I have the top with impeller inside and turned the shaft clock wise and it went on fairly easily. Just hope my base went down and seated in a good place. I pushed all around and followed your video of the order and direction of the gaskets. I down have as much stud over the top after torquing the nuts as you did. Hope this is not an issue!! I purchased my kit from Wuffe Marine on eBay. cost 48.59. After viewing your video I searched on line for the EMP company you bought yours from. Could not see how to email them or get prices on their web site. I am in ALA and I think they are in Alabaster. The parts look the same as my last one which the dealer put on for me. Do you have any suggestions before I attempt to bolt it back on the upper stern drive?

Okay good so you got to see the inside of the impeller and could see the cut out where the rib would slide into it!👍 There are a bunch of different companies that make the same parts you should be fine with that brand just dont forget your rubber slinger or oring on top and small oring in between the upper and lower where the oil passes through! Awesome!👍😊 you should be able to mount it all back up and test it now! I have another video on changing the impeller but that video isn't scheduled until march lol but I'm glad these videos helped! I'm here for you anytime if you have questions in the future, I also have a ton of other boat videos on a variety of stuff lol take care and have a great boating summer!

Looking forward to viewing your videos on changing out shift cables and trim switches as well as bell housing rebuild. I'm redoing a 1986 Mercrusier on a 19ft cobalt. I will also have to redo the interior since the boat seats are looking bad as well as many, many hours of buffing the paint back to looking good. Also have to install new distributor assembly. Already have the new starter, fuel pump and upper solenoid installed. Weather has been bad so moving slower than I would like

You forgot the rubber sleeve that goes down over the shaft abd sits on the impeller housing. Its in your kit. Eoic fail. Cnon man.

I purposely left the rubber slinger off along with the rubber o-ring oil seal and shaft o-ring and water tube because this stern drive is not ready to be installed on an upper and is going to be sitting out for a while!!! I did not want them dry rotting if it was not going to be installed soon! I say this in the video this was just how to install a new impeller housing!
