The History Guy: History Deserves to Be Remembered

3 жыл бұрын

Dogs have accompanied men into war probably for most of human history, but WWI was the first war where they were used in an official and broad capacity to find the wounded. Mercy dogs, also known as casualty dogs, or ambulance dogs, served on all sides of WWI, and saved thousands of lives. It is history that deserves to be remembered.

Imagine the terror of laying alone on a battlefield, trying to stay hidden from enemies but desperately hoping for a medic to find you. To your amazement, you feel a wet nose sniffing you neck, then licking your wounds. You're elated as you wait for the dog to run back and fetch help, but instead he lays down beside you and rests his head on your limp, bleeding arm. You realise what the dog already knows. You're never going home.

there was the story of 2 medic us paratroopers that established a hospital of fortune in a church in the middle of a battle trying to save both US and German Soldiers. "Sanitary dogs" is a mistranslation, sounds like they were used to clean up. "Sanitäts-" is the prefix for "medical". Translating "Sanitätshunde" as "Medic('s) Dogs" would have been a bit closer. Good video nontheless.

Also, public toilets don't really have negative connotations to me either. Imagine a world where public toilets didn't exist and people relieved themselves anywhere they saw fit. Sure, I can find a way to make it negative. But just looking the word by itself, no context, I don't see any inherent negative qualities.

@@steyn1775 Cats would never be suited to work on battle fields due to the characteristic of the species. That's not some moral failing on their part. They are animals in the middle of the food chain, both predator and prey. Evolutionarily speaking, they needed to be more skittish and careful than dogs (wolves) to survive. They are not pack animals, and it is therefore much harder to train them to be so loyal that they disregard their natural instincts, like horses and dogs. They are independent, and if you get a cat, a bond is not guaranteed. However, anyone who has ever had the pleasure can attest that cats definitely care for their chosen few. There are also accounts of cats living in care facilities that spend the night with patients on their death bed. I don't want to project any human motivations on an animal, but I think it is fair to say that they were a comfort to those people in their final moments.

I'm a combat veteran & have had my faithful GSD service dog Zeus for over two years. I'm now a certified canine good citizenship evaluator to help other vets prepare their own animal for potential service. Dgs are truly amazing animals. Zeus' back story (i wasn't told this until after I adopted him) was that I was his third human & if he didn't succeed w/me he essentially had no chance of being a service dog. Reflecting back on our first encouter he knew i was his human. We worked closely for about a month before I realized we were a team. I adopted him after that first month & he's been truly instrumental to my overall well being & healing. As THG said, we tend to amorphasize our animals...they know nothing of patriotism or politics and know by instinct and not by reasoning. A great descriptive of my service animal. He reads me well & knows when I'm struggling before I do. So as I write this, he looks at me with eyes of comfort, most likely wondering why I'm crying? History Guy, you've made my day brighter sharing this heart felt story and for that, Thank you. 🙏👏

@@davidtyler5556 "Politically sensitive"? It is history. If those that are so offended by facts that happened and were documented as they occurred, then they need to go find a nice place to curl up with a warm woobie. Dr. Felton speaks of the, dare I say it, Nazis because they happen to be the political power driving the Wehrmacht train at the time. Actually, he only speaks of the Nazi political arena if a particular individual or commander was a die hard fully indoctrinated follower of Hitler and the Nazi Party. This allows the viewer a better understanding of why certain actions or in-actions tool place and how. So it doesn't matter who is in power in the United States almost 100 years later, it is still history. Like it or not. That's like saying it was okay if they collaborated when Trump and Associates were in power, but not now. Heaven forbid.

I have a buddy of mine I served with who is suffering terribly with PTSD and has a service dog. It amazes me how attentive she is when my buddy starts to stress out. She is serving long after her owner’s service was no longer required. Amazing animals.

Thanks so much for this episode. It brought thoughts of my Grandpa who fought in WW1 and they had a dog called Buddy that was a member of his unit who died on the battlefield and when he came home my Grandma said that every time he heard this popular song at the time called my Buddy, he'd tear up. He was a huge animal lover who once owned a monkey, a horse, bred canaries and always had a dog. ☮️

Homing pigeons and the story of Cher Ami would be a great follow up, if you havent already covered it.

and just as we do with so many of our human veterans we do with our precious dogs, letting them go homeless, wondering the streets of this nation, not knowing where their next meal will come. When I was in the Army I worked alongside many dog handlers and their four legged battle buddies. It was a huge comfort having these dogs close by. And they were treated with so much love and care. Point, rescue a homeless dog... or even two.

Damn. I thought it was going to be about dogs finishing off the mortally wounded.
