Y'all saying that therapists aren't supposed to speak in such a manner. Lemme explain something. Meredith Grey is the character I relate to most in my life. She's negligent with her own health and safety, stubborn and passionate. Meredith defends her ideals and thoughts according to those characteristics, meaning that it is extremely hard to make her understand things that are somehow different from what she believes is correct. If Meredith's therapist were to speak softly to her, she'd mock the woman and state she's an incompetent professional. To get under Meredith's skin, her therapist had to use her active voice; she had to be pushy, insistent, strong, because the only way to conquer Meredith's respect, and therefore, her attention, is by confronting her face to face without fear. My therapist did the same to me and I am ever so grateful. Therapists adapts themselves to their patients. April, per example, could never be treated that way, considering that she's a sensible person. Meredith, on the other hand, needs the tough love. People function differently. That's just how things work.

Every time I watch this episode and this scene and the vulnerable confession to follow, I say to myself, I wish I had a Dr. Wyatt! I think she's one of the most underrated characters. I believe it worked so well because Amy Madigan's performance is so powerful and the dynamic push and pull between the two was magical!

Half the people in the comments talking about the therapist saying she stepped out of line clearly never went to therapy they aren’t there to be your friend and tell you what you want to hear they are there to guide you to a better path and help break destructive or bad tendencies that can cause harm to you or others some you need to have a kind approach but some people with these kind of issues that mer have need to be told straight out bluntly otherwise they will never learn and be dismissive unless that accident ends their life which is exactly what the therapist told her would happen so don’t act like you know how people should be treated and how therapy works if you never been there and sometimes your lack of knowledge and adamant statements of how people should be treated could be the cause of someone else’s trauma leading them to have issues that they go to therapist to try to fix

Personally I haven’t watched this show. I don’t know the characters or their backgrounds, only bits and pieces from the comments and the information I get from the clip itself. Either way, a lot of the comments are saying that therapists shouldn’t be like this. A therapist isn’t always some soft spoken kind woman like Miss Honey or some shit. They’re there to help, not tell you what you want to hear. If your therapist is constantly telling you that you’ve done nothing wrong and that you’re in the right in every goddamn situation they’re lying to you. Because if that were true you wouldn’t be in therapy. And from what I’ve gathered about Meredith she needs a therapist that’ll tell her what she needs to know, not what she wants to hear.

Just her medical background. It would have included details about her having nearly drowned and being unresponsive, as well as the fact she was injured in a bomb explosion. Later on it would probably have included details about her having a miscarriage after telling a gunman to shoot her instead of Derek.

People who have actually been in therapy to some capacity, how accurate is this scene really? I'm genuinely curious.
@felipebiggi10 ай бұрын
It's accurate really. A good therapist will spot and call you out on your bullshit so you snap out of it lol
@Sataandagi967 ай бұрын
Pretty accurate. While I have had very gentle therapists (more or less mild depression) there are more intense therapists who HAVE to be "stricter" in their approach. Look at Meredith, she NEEDS someone to be more strict, because Meredith is strict and thickheaded in her behavior. As Felipe already pointed out, they call you out on your bs, as long as you are honest. Mer has her certain approaches to deal with her issues and then turns everything the way she knows how to, to shield herself. But that is honestly not the best way to cope, as we have seen in the series. Sometimes you need someone to slap the facts into your face. And that is portrayed pretty well in this part of the show. I like this character. And she's at least one competent psychologist. In medical dramas, they tend to be portrayed as absolutely shallow idiots.
