It's likely failing if it can't actually find a matching card. Are you sure there's no whitespace or differences in case and the card names are exactly the same?

For me it just overwrites the description

if you don't want to overwrite and you want to combine, you'll need to incorporate both card description variables in the set card's description. So something like "set card description to {carddescription} {foundcarddescription} "

I'm sorry you didn't find this helpful! Essentially you want to create a rule that says when a new card is created, lookup a card on the board with {cardname} (that new card's title) ,and then set the card description to the be the existing card's description via {foundcarddescription} and then use the find card action with the {cardname} to then archiving that old card.
