Picked up a couple Merle clamps for gluing up segmented shapes. This is a first look at them.

Very well done ... you explained everything, including a couple of items that could of been better and/or the potential knuckle buster. You even demonstrated it very well covering every aspect of the clamp with a nice dose of frame assembly best practices. I really got a lot out of it and managed to learn everything I needed to know about this specific clamp. Cheers Mate!

You won't use them all the time but they are very handy when you have a multiple angle glue up. Thanks for watching.

Great review and intro - Got my set and didn't know where to start. Your video was very helpful.

They work great, just watch your fingers with the handle spring back. Thanks for watching.

I just ordered a pair of these based in large part to your review 👍

They are very handy for tough clamping jobs. Hope you like them.

Those are pretty slick clamps you have there. Sure beats the ratcheting straps . Thanks for sharing with us.

The ratchet straps didn't do a good job. These should work. Thanks for watching.

I just tried them out a few weeks ago on a 12”x48” leaded glass panel I created. The clamp worked like a charm! But like you said, watch those fingers !

It looks like they will be very useful. That spring back really surprised me the first time. Thanks for watching.

Great review, the only thing I'd add is you didn't like the clamping mechanism for the strap saying you never know where the lever for the strap will end up. It should end up in the same spot every time, the strap is a constant thickness so I would imagine if you just do a half turn to loosen, then half turn to tighten. I don't see why you would unscrew several turns. Thank you for taking the time though.

I put adjustable handles on them in another video that work great. Thanks for watching.

I bought one at the Wood Working Show in Tampa, and it has sat in my drawer after trying it. I got bit too many times and it was a pain in the rear end to set up. I went back to the Bessee one I have.

This one does apply quite a bit of evenly distributed force. That winder can really bite you. I think it will see quite a bit of use in my shop. Thanks for watching.

Those types of clamps have been around for a long time. I'm surprised that the band was spring steel? Have fun with them!
@unemployedredneckhillbilly20235 жыл бұрын
Spring steel is required to keep it from linking. They're great clamps could just use a couple updates to make them user friendly. Thanks for watching.

I would lob off the handle, weld a 8mm socket on it and use one of those bendy screwdrivers to tighten it. Did something similar with a screw for my table saw, it was un-reachable without some form of contortion so i welded a square head on it and use a Stanley bendy to reach it. Oh and i would remove the banding from the clamp body, and reverse it, so the spool sits flush, that way, with a small bracket, you could affix the spool rigidly to the clamp body so it's all a more compact body. Seems like a bit of a hassle with all that flopping about. You can actually see what i mean on the picture from the box, where it's setup for 3 feet. The spool is the other way round. :)) Great video, hope you enjoy them for a long time, they seem solid.

They definitely are nice clamps but need improvement in those areas. I was thinking cut them off and pin on a clevis type handle that could flip every 180 deg or some of the ratcheting handles with the spring loaded splines. The spool direction doesn't really mater because you have to pull out extra. It is that little rewind handle that can bite you . Thanks for watching.

Yeah, i noticed. I had a roller tape like that, they can bite, no kidding. :)

Looks like a good clamp. Is the banding made of metal or Nylon? Looks a a finger cutter?
@unemployedredneckhillbilly20235 жыл бұрын
It is steel. Not very sharp so it won't cut you. It is all the tension in that reel that releases after rewinding that can get you. It does a great job. Thanks for watching.

Well worth the 30 bucks or so they cost and no metal band to mess with

I've got a dozen of these clamps had them for a few years always work but the rewinder is a problem and hard to get to work sometimes
@unemployedredneckhillbilly20235 жыл бұрын
That rewind handle should have a way to slow it down. It can hurt your fingertips if you are not careful. They look like they should last. Thanks for watching.

Yeah the metal band will cut you up for sure

Man cannot survive on veggies alone somedays. Snuck a big bag in the cart last trip to Costco. It is not really that great from the bag so I decided to start making my own again. New toy on the way for that 😋. Then I will have to come clean.

Every time you post a new vid you've got another 1,000 subs - 50k isn't far off! Interesting tool - odd how it's so well thought-out but still has some obvious shortcomings. That clamp handle to secure the strap is really not optimal. You mentioned "other projects" - are there some segmented bowls in your future??
@unemployedredneckhillbilly20235 жыл бұрын
Every time I post a cooking video I loose a batch of subscribers then the next day I get more new subs. Never thought I would get more than a couple hundred. I was surprised by those couple issues but they don't affect the operation and should be easy to fix. They apply quite a bit of well distributed force and work great. I wish my lathe was big enough to turn bowls. Thanks for watching.

I have to start making jerkey again because that stuff is not that great. It does wash the lettuce down nicely. 😁

The band reel needs a blade lock similar to a tape measure.

That would be nice. Have to watch your fingers with all the spring back. It does work great. Thanks for watching.
