i know he's not completely comparable, but when i heard Chris Stapleton..he reminded me of Waylon Jennings..every 10 years or so , country music has to have someone to bring them back to where they were...when i was in college and stopped listening because it was pop..Alan Jackson and Randy Travis brought it home...Chris Stapleton and i listen to Red Dirt Country on Pandora but now those guys like John Parde are getting mainstream...but i love the old music i was raised on...i love when music gets back to their roots..but they are controlled by MSM now...the great songs are not always played on the radio now...thats why i listen to streaming..they publish stuff that mainstream doesn't..

I'd have to agree with you. I'll just add that some other recording artists in other genres have made it a point to sound great when they perform. The first one that comes to mind in that regard is Gordon Lightfoot. I went to his concerts 3 times. All 3 were as precise as studio recordings. I think most people would probably be hard pressed to tell the difference. Others included James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Simon and Garfunkel, and the Everly Brothers. I think it's interesting to note that all those, except for S&G, had country root, to some degree.

In my humble opinion, this song is the best example of pure country and western musîc. My dad used to deliver mail to Merle and his mom , Flossie, over half a century ago. I live not a half mile from there today. House is a converted boxcar.

My son chose this for his dance with me at his wedding, because "mama tried". We laughed that his new in-laws might worry about the turning 21 in prison - he actually never was anything more trying than a free thinker but I was a single mom. The new family members were from Long Island so we're just impressed with our "two-step". Anyway, thanks, Merle, for so many great songs tied to so many memories for me and millions more.

The first thing I remember knowing Was a lonesome whistle blowing And a young'un's dream of growing up to ride On a freight train leaving town Not knowing where I'm bound And no one could change my mind but Mama tried One and only rebel child From a family meek and mild My mama seemed to know what lay in store Despite all my Sunday learning Towards the bad I kept on turning Till Mama couldn't hold me anymore And I turned twenty-one in prison doing life without parole No one could steer me right but Mama tried, Mama tried Mama tried to raise me better, but her pleading I denied That leaves only me to blame 'cause Mama tried Dear old Daddy, rest his soul Left my mom a heavy load She tried so very hard to fill his shoes Working hours without rest Wanted me to have the best She tried to raise me right but I refused And I turned twenty-one in prison doing life without parole No one could steer me right but Mama tried, Mama tried Mama tried to raise me better, but her pleading I denied That leaves only me to blame 'cause Mama tried

I had a stare down with Merle, at a Merle Kristofferson concert. I was front row and was watching Merle idle while Kris was singing; Merle noticed me, not grinning like an idiot like everyone else. I was literally right in front of him at the base of the stage. Merle lowered his dark glasses on his nose and stared at me. I didn't flinch, move or change my expression. We stared at each other like that until it was time for Merle to get up and join Kris, must've been a full minute. No idea what he was thinking but it was damn cool.

Stunned to go from "Yay ! It is Merle's birthday, let's crank his music up !" to a few hours later, crying while I do because -- that quick and without warning -- he is gone ... Sing me back home, Merle, on Silver Wings, I have a feeling that the bottle is going to let me down and I definitely have the working man blues now ... Thanks for the music, Hag. You done good.

RIP Merle Haggard. 04/06/1937-04/06/2016. He passed away on his birthday. Crazy thing is, he told people close to him that he was going to pass away on his birthday. You'll be missed.

+Stephanie Nicholas Reminds me of another legend of entertainment. Mark Twain. He always said he was born when Haley's coment came through and he would die on it's return. He was right. Sometimes people know when their time is up but knew exactly how to live a good full life before it happened.

Samuel Carver My mother passed away last year. Two days after her birthday, she said that she was going to pass in three days, and sure enough, she passed away three days later. It's crazy that some people just know that they're dying.

In "Mama Tried", Haggard focuses on the pain and suffering he caused his own mother by being incarcerated in 1957 in San Quentin!!!!

This song is quit autobiographical, including spending 3 years in prison. In fact, The Man In Black, Johnny Cash went to and preform. like all as he often did. Merle Haggard was so moved and so inspired that he decided , I want to do what that man does. It was an experience, seeing Johnny Cash play from prison, made Haggard completely do a 180lwhen he found a hero was coming to entertain some of those who need it most.

LYRICS OTHER RECORDINGS ARTISTS LISTEN PEOPLE ALSO SEARCH FOR The first thing I remember knowin' Was a lonesome whistle blowin' And a young un's dream of growin' up to ride On a freight train leavin' town Not knowin' where I'm bound And no one could change my mind but Mama tried One and only rebel child From a family, meek and mild My Mama seemed to know what lay in store Despite all my Sunday learnin' Towards the bad, I kept on turnin' 'Til Mama couldn't hold me anymore And I turned twenty-one in prison doin' life without parole No one could steer me right but Mama tried, Mama tried Mama tried to raise me better, but her pleading, I denied That leaves only me to blame 'cause Mama tried Dear old Daddy, rest his soul Left my Mom a heavy load She tried so very hard to fill his shoes Workin' hours without rest Wanted me to have the best She tried to raise me right but I refused And I turned twenty-one in prison doin' life without parole No one could steer me right but Mama tried, Mama tried Mama tried to raise me better, but her pleading, I denied That leaves only me to blame 'cause Mama tried

I like the younger Haggard, and looked up to him when I was a teenager. In his later years I didn't like how he supported Hillary, and seemed to turn his back on "If you don't love it, leave it" when he said he was stupid when he was younger.

Luckily, the music he played really transcends all that crap.
