Wizards Guide To Defensive Baking was my first T Kingfisher (and absolutely my favorite!), and after subsequently enjoying Nettle & Bone and A House With Good Bones, I've decided I'll probably read everything she writes! I'm excited to get into her other works (and its extra cool since she lives just a couple towns over from me!)

I finished A Wizards Guide to Defensive Baking last week and loved it. It was so charming and I loved how creative Mona got at the end. Like you, I cried a little at that one scene even though I'm not really a crier. Thanks for the recommendation!

If you put a wet, folded paper towel under your bowl, it won't move around as you work the dough. It'll stick to the counter thanks to some weird sorcery. I know, I know, not the main focus, but this is how my brain works. It picks weird stuff to comment about!

I have mostly listened to audiobooks now-a-days. Eyes aren't what they used to be, Anyway, that was one of the best listens I've had in a long time! I rank it up there with the Harry Dresden series. Outstanding performance by Patricia Santomasso. Highly recommended.

I had complicated feelings about A Wizards Guide To Defensive Baking. I agree that there were many wonderful whimsical and fun things, and I liked the magical ideas, etc. However, Aunt Tabitha's complete lack of direct presence and unrealistic behavior for the bulk of the book had me expecting a reveal that she was a figment of Mona's imagination and Mona was an orphan running a bakery on her own. Overall I liked it, but I really felt that her aunt and uncle were horrible guardians that were extraordinarily irresponsible in a way that tainted the experience for me. Also adding Door to Door Bookstore to my TBR given A Man Called Ove is my favorite Backman.

If you appreciate T Kingfisher's humor in The WIzard's Guide to Defensive Baking, I think you would really enjoy Digger Unearthed. It's a nice compilation of her comic written under Urusla Vernon.

The Wizards Guide To Defensive Baking was my favorite YA/middle grade read from last year, I was so shocked by how gripping the plot was and how well done and interesting the world was. I absolutely know which character you cried for and so did I! She was amazing. I even bought this one for my nephew because I just had to get more people to read it.

I really think you should read the comic Digger that Kingfisher wrote (under her real name Ursula Vernon)! It's definitely unique, it has a lot of the little quirky worldbuilding bits you liked in this one, and Ursula's art matches her writing perfectly! It was originally a webcomic so you might even be able to still read it online for free :D

As somebody who has been reading T Kingfisher books for years now, I'm so excited to see more people picking her books up and enjoying them. Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking is absolutely one of my favorites and also made me cry. She has other middle grade books like Minor Mage and Illuminations, but I also really recommend Swordheart. It's an adult fantasy romance (not a romantasy, to be clear!) and it's so good.

I just read Door-to-Door Book Store last weekend & it both wrecked me & made me feel so good! As a former bookseller/current librarian I loved the aspect of connecting people with books, not just the ones they want, but ones they need. That said, when I went into work Tuesday I was able to send it home with someone else to pass the love along 🙂I read the Wizards Guide to Defensive Baking last year when looking for something Pratchetty. I enjoyed it, but not as much as the Tiffany Aching stories.

I wonder, have you read the Powder Mage trilogy? Your description of the magic in The Wizards Guide To Defensive Baking reminded me of its magic system, which fortunately can be summarized without getting spoilery. (Everything I put here is stuff I'm pretty sure is in the first chapter or two, but I'll leave a gap in case you would prefer to go in completely blind): VERY VERY MINOR SPOILERS BELOW: The Powder Mage trilogy has 3 main classes of magic user: The Privileged: powerful elemental casters who use primordial forces to devastating effect Powder Mages: people who are enhanced by exposure to gunpowder, and are capable of astonishing feats with firearms The Knacked: people who have this one quirky supernatural power. Sometimes it's something that's super rare IRL, like an eidetic memory, sometimes it's outright supernatural. There's way more to this, of course, but that would be pushing beyond introductory chapter reveals, which I'm avoiding.

T.Kingfisher has frequently ended up being the same for me - interesting premise with an execution that's disappointing - but you've convinced me to give The Wizards Guide to Defensive Baking a try once I've finished my current TBR. The Door-to-Door Bookstore was already in my orbit, so I'm even more excited to start that!

Currently on track to finish Speaking Bones. Thank you so much for introducing me to YET another favourite series of mine (no, like my new number 1 fave because I trust Ken to land the ending). Jia's character progression is one of the best I've ever encountered in fiction, honestly speaking. The Dandelion Dynasty needs more hype, deserves all the awards and DESERVES an adaptation as soon as yesterday.

@@merphynapierreviewsIt really is. I have never encountered a fantasy series quite like it, and I suspect I never will. I cannot wait to dive into more of Ken' books, (Three Body Problem is getting an adaptation!) and listen to all his interviews, and just gush about the themes and the character work and the world building...oh I'm obsessed😭
