They are spotlights. Mainly used to searching areas and lighting up properties during armed standoffs, these vehicles have them because they are Armed Response Vehicles.

Reminds me of a story my ex wife told me working as a nurse early 80's. Doing a none urgent transfer of patient to a Liverpool hospital from Manchester no satnav the ambulance crew got lost. So they radioed control another ambulance was sent out, they found ambulance in side road not knowing if urgent or not put on blues and twos to guide them. Lost ambulance had to do the same, so two ambulances racing through city. That must have been a sight back then.

If they are using sirens as a method of deterrence of criminals, they ought to default to either the yelp or the phaser, because of it's close-range effectiveness. If they are using it as a method of warning the public - they should default to the two-tones, because this isn't an emergency and they should make effort to reduce noise pollution. That's just my two pence 👍

And your incorrect on all counts. The type of siren used has nothing to do with whether they are attending a call or not its to do with traffic density and the ability to change the tone if the driver in front hasn’t noticed them.

@@jaypw321 I appreciate your input - but sirens were never 'designed' but have evolved based on legacy of older systems and have stuck around or chosen out of preference. It's commonly acknowledged that wail is used for warning vehicles at a distance with yelp and phaser for short distances. Two-tone is one of the simplest sirens that doesn't flood the frequency spectrum as much as the other swooping siren types which is why they are being used in NYC to reduce noise pollution.

And at no point did I say they were designed. My point is, which you’ve repeated, is that they are used in different traffic densities. As you’ve said wail in low density and a more direct tone in higher density. The ability to change tone can also be used to alert a driver. With regards to noise pollution it’s not a valid point this is for a short period of time and the middle of city with sirens being heard all day. The type of tone used has nothing to do with whether it’s an emergency or not

@@jaypw321 well... no, the point where we disagree was that the switch between functions exists to warn drivers ahead in case they hadn't noticed. This isn't a hugely easy function on most British emergency vehicles because of the way that function is implemented on the car's horn. You were refuting me in believing that I was saying some sirens were for emergencies and others were not - that was not what I said - the point I was making was that two-tones use up less of the frequency spectrum and so are less invasive to the general soundscape of the area.
