I own the DSL100HR, love it! I also one day want to get the dual rectifier you have there. But for now, the Marshall does kick ass and has already gone up another $500.00 in price in just the last year. People are seeing what a beast this thing truly is, and all channels are workable channels. I don't like the scoop much, but it has its place in a mix depending on what you are trying to achieve. .

I love the way he plays in his videos. Timing is perfect; he's got mojo groove going. Raw, not the most difficult stuff, but not exactly easy either, and it is quite melodic. It sounds so good, even if I am not a strictly metal guy, He totally gets into it, which just ads to the awesome presentation. About the amps, the latest Marshall DSL cost/benefit is hard to beat, even if it doesn't sound quite as full and thick as the Mesa, especially for this kind of music. Even though he does great job dialing in the sound, I still hear a little of the newer Marshall fizz going on. For whatever reason it's inevitable with less expensive Marshalls since JCM 2000s. I know that mid-high fizz bite helps in a live band mix, but it is hard to like when you hear it next to a cranked Dual Rec or other 6L6 powered amp that has thumping low-end mid scoop. That said, mid scooped amps are not as versatile, at least to my ears, as they are always dark and not as musical. Maybe it goes back to the headroom that big 6L6 Fenders have. They're clean amps because they do not break up as easily as EL34 powered amps, I don't know. Enough rambling. I have a big Mesa 4x12 V30 Dual Rec cab and nothing moves air like it, so I am glad that he used it for both amps. That DSL 100HR is a fantastic all-round amp for a gigging player though (for those of us who have not gone modeling/profiling), and you can get another guitar or cabinet (or both) for the same amount of money instead of spending on something like a Gibson, er Mesa Dual Rectifier.

In many of your comparisons, you comment on the strengths and weaknesses of each amp, what use cases each amp may be more/most suitable for, and how they compare in terms of similarities and differences. I wish this video had that, as I really enjoy hearing your take on the amps. Also, I was wondering, how do you EQ the amps for these comparisons?
@Crypticmaskguitar
@Crypticmaskguitar 2 жыл бұрын
For sure. I’ve changed how I do these videos a few times over the years. Mainly because I hate talking in videos haha! Both are great amps with their own sound and work in many ways. As far as EQ on the amp I usually raise the volume so that the frequencies actually have room to shine when they are flat… and then adjust to taste. I’m always changing my EQ settings so I don’t really remember the specifics for this video. Kind of feels like I have a non-answer here, though haha! Cheers -Ryan

@@Crypticmaskguitar Thank you, Ryan. Your amp comparisons are really illuminating. I've learned so much about amps and tone just from watching your videos. I was wondering, do you have a go-to spot for miking the G12-T75 that gives give you comparable results as what you'd get from a V30 with the same amp? There is so little information on this speaker and miking strategies for it in the metal context, so I thought I'd ask, as you might have some insight into it.

Yeah the Mesa sounds a little bit better for heavy rythms while the Marshall has better lead tones (and for sure better clean tones), but you can buy 3 of the Marshalls new for the price of the Mesa new, and if you swap the stock JJ EL34 tubes for KT77's and add a 35 dollar Hammond choke to the Marshall, it will make it sound and react significantly better than the stock tone.

Neither of these amps is overly tight without a boost, but I personally don't like when a guitar tone is too scratchy. It needs some low end in the palm mutes. I'm surprised to hear how tight the Rectifier is, considering its track history. If I had one, I wouldn't run it with any kind of boost. Also shocked to hear that the Marshall is more scooped. I like demos like this where there's a section eith and withOUT a boost pedal, so many people fail at something simple like that but I think it's important to show at least without a pedal, if not both like this

I know this is going to sound like a weird way to describe it but to me the marshall sound is more up front, raw and present whereas the mesa sounds more polished. I think if you had the 2 amps in the same band at the same time, the marshall would stand out more tone wise. I think the mesa would get lost behind the marshall and with the drums and bass guitar you would lose that low end too.

That would be the Mids. British amps are more Mid Focused, US are usually Low and High Focused.
