Yeah Ryder insisted on Hawke being cast for Reality Bites. Thr producers and studio hadn't wanted him since his career was in a bit of a slump at that time, with no recent big films or successes. Hawke has said that without Ryder, he'd never have landed the role. Oh and without Hawke, the song Stay by Lisa Loeb would never have been on the film soundtrack and would never have been a hit or gotten airplay. At the time Loeb was unsigned to a record label, but Hawke knew her, lived nearby and had seen her perform in coffee shops. He heard the song and recommended it to the people in charge of the music. Hawke also directed the music video for the song.

Not only is it unethical, what you are left with is a man who will most likely cheat on you. I think we agree overall. The husband's decision to cheat caused the marriage to fail and the mistress had a hand in that by agreeing to it.

There is so much more than just beauty to a relationship. Im in no way excusing ethan here, but it comes down to how you feel seen and treated in a relationship. Maybe he felt threatened by his wife success, maybe not. Maybe they drifted apart, maybe they just became partners in raising their kids and there was nothing more than just friendship. Either way, cheating is never ok. But trust me, being married to a super attractive person and still feeling like you are always alone happens way more often then you would expect.

Well when Hawke was young, he was considered to be good looking. Think Dead Poets' Society (BTW folks Robin Williams cheated, and he too married the nanny. Oh he also gave one ex herpes, without telling her he had it. There was a lawsuit over it and I remember hearing jokes about Williams having herpes). Hawke just aged strangely. But I think he felt uncomfortable with the whole fame and paparazzi and media attention life. Shawcross was not famous. She was there to just support him and be a lowkey wife and mother. Thurman didn't have the time. Career demands took up too much time and mental energy. And then there was the glare of public attention. By this stage, I think Hawke realized he wanted a different life and that he and Thurman weren't going to be what he now wanted. It wasn't going to work. Perhaps if Thurman had mostly given up on her career and avoided the spotlight and been able to be a fulltime wife and mom, they would have lasted. I think that's why Matt Damon decided he would no longer date or marry an actress or celeb. So he married an ordinary woman who would be there fulltime for him and their kids. I think it's actually a pretty common thing.

I was a live in nanny in my late 20s working for a big shot couple in the UK Film Business, hired by the wife. The wife was about 39, the daughter 5. The father was very good looking and we spent a lot of time together with the kid when mum was working. One day, the grandmother, his mother, who didn't like her daughter in law very much, asked me if I was attracted to her son, and wanted to sleep with him. It was super uncomfortable. I quit 3 months later. To this day, I will not understand why the mother of the child would hire a young woman as a nanny. Nothing untoward happened in my case, but maybe it could have, and I can absolutely see how a case like this would unfold.

Thx for sharing that, I found it very interesting and morally depraved of his mother to try to use you to break his family up solely bc she didn't like the daughter in law... Good for you for walking away, imagine what troubles a girl with a weaker moral compass could have gotten into in the same situation... Some would have thought it was an open door invitation to have the husband... but his mother was just wanting to get rid of the present wife & it certainly didn't mean she wanted you to be the next wife...it's pure evil to try to set you up like that.

Ethan actually went on record to say he didnt cheat with the Ryan. They fell in love a good while after he divorced Uma. Uma has never confirmed it either. I'm inclined to believe him because he's been open about his mistakes and even written novels loosely based on on his life which dont show him in a good light. My understanding is that the affair in question which was the catalyst for the divorce was rumoured to be with Angelina Jolie during the filming of Taking Lives. If you look at the premiere photos, it certainly looks like something was going on between Angelina and Ethan, there is a little too much chemistry, very reminiscent of the Brad and Angelina, Mrs Smith era.

Yes there were rumors about Jolie and Hawke. But as I recall, there were rumors about this Canadian woman who worked with Hawke - he was filming in Canada. She might have bwen in fashion or something. The woman denied it though. And so did Hawke. As for Thurman, there were rumors that she took coke or some other drug, that she was an addict, whilst she was pregnant with her youngest child. The man was this super wealthy playboy financier hedge fund guy Arpad Busson (I think that's the name). He dated Elle MacPherson and several other famous celebs and actresses. Allegedly he was the reason why Thurman got into drugs and developrd a habit.

I seem to recall that Gary Oldman ditched his first wife actress Lesley Manville (great British actress) for young Thurman. I think Thurman was 20 and Oldman in his 30s. Their marriage was brief. Oldman has had several marriages and divorces. And apparently was not involved in raising his son with Manville. She basically had to go it alone. EDIT: Oldman ditched his wife and child first, when he went off to Hollywood alone. And there he met Thurman, not sure exactly when so by that time he would likely have been separated.

Infidelity in a marriage is never really the root cause of a break-up of a marriage, but merely symtomatic of a greater problem that exists within a marriage that was ignored or just not dealth with. Hawke admitted he was much too young when he married Thurman. Sadly, as we know there are couples who still stay together when infidelty has been discovered, and these couples worked on the core issue, other people cannot get past the infidelity and break-up.

In the case of Schwarzenegger she wasn't tbe nanny, she was the housekeeper. And she wasn't that young (but young enough to get pregnant and have his baby) or that attractive - go check out photos of her. She looks like the type you'd want to hire as a nanny or housekeeper, like the kindly mom who likes to cook a lot type. That's why everyone was shocked.
