This video starts at home where I prepare the mess Tin Cottage pie to take out with me to a Loch. This is the third cook that I have had in the Mess Tin where I have cooked at entire dish, the other two videos being a Bacon and egg pir and a lasange. I find the Britiah Army mess Tin to be one of the best Mess Kit units to cook with. What I cooked today was tasty and a sheer joy to cook, I look forward to more cooking with this type of Mess Kit. As always I thank you for watching.

My granddaughter and I do nature cooks here on the farm. Last Christmas I gave her a onetigris twig stove and we have had two or three cooks so far. She got very excited when she saw yours in action. I look to you for cook ideas. Thanks for your videos, I enjoy them immensely.

thanks for the recipe. Thoughts and ideas, you could invert the lid and add coals to the top. You could also place / wedge a wine cork cross ways through the pot lid handle. then you could pinch it without getting burned when the lid is hot. I see some cooks doing this online. cheers roger

Gday Chris. Wonderful videos. Ive just subscribed to your channel. In the years watching and searching out videos like yours i cant believe you never came up in my recommended. But ive found your channel now and look forward to watching them. I particularly like the mess tin playlist. I get a great deal of nostalgia see cooking on ally mess tins. Ive swaped mine out for stainless steel dutch army ones, i got a bit hung up on the altzimer link to soft alu. Sure the microscopic amount of alu is just my paranoia running away. Balancing cooking on open flame and alu is quite a knack. Recon youve nailed it. keep the vids comming please. cheers

Hi there, thanks for the info, I will check it out. It not often I use them but they are just so handy. I have the american Army mess tins, they may be stainless steel I think. I would argue that this pie was the nicest dish so far, it really was quite tasty ha, I must do it again! Thanks for watching the videos and subscribing, appreciate it, cheers Chris

Cool! That is what we call a Shepard's Pie here in Nova Scotia and most places here in Canada. Always wondered how that would work...a nice homemade oven! What a great location too! Isn't it true, so many seem to think they leave their mark by chopping or carving and leaving stuff everywhere. Usually take a bag with me and haul out what I can. Take great care out there and continue these great adventures! Bruce and Otis

Hello, as a wee oven it worked really well, I'm so confident with it I think I will bake with it. Good for you clearing up the litter, it shouldn't have to come to that but some people just don't realise how bad it is, but with folk like yourself hopefully it makes that positive difference. I gave mention in the video to the pies, beef is cottage pie and lamb is shepards pie, in truth whenever we had it, no matter what the meat we always just called it shepards pie too, I bet you guys sure do make a good version over there though, thanks for watching and for the comment, cheers Chris.

Another beautiful spot you found there Chris and lovely to see evidence of the beavers. Did you see any? Totally agree with your comments about people disrespecting our natural world so thanks for doing your bit!

Hi trev, no beavers today but I will tell you a truth, theres almost 2000 beavers around my area now. personally I think it's wonderful. theyt had an offical release in Knappdale forest, it's going well, but not as well as they hoped, they had to bring more in. But here a few were released illegally and they're thriving. Hopefully see another video from South Africa, cheers mate.

I usually use a petromax ft1 for stuff like this, nice 1 liter dutch oven makes a great 1 man shepherds/cottage pie (as well as plenty of other things) and well worth the extra weight in my opinion.

Hi Craig, so far to date it's been a fairly mild winter, some good opportunities to get out, though this week not so good, thanks for watchinig the hides video, I went yesterday and they are closed due to fallen trees😒, and this week more winds to come. Everywhere I go Craig I see rubbish, it's a real shame, with the upcoming season it will just get worse no doubt. Nice to hear from you as always. cheers for checking in, hope you're keeping well, Cheers Chris

One long, lingering look at that delicious pie in the thumbnail and I immediately subscribed to what I believe to be an excellent channel. Now, I shall watch more of that pie... What an appreciative eye you have for the natural beauty of your surroundings, which you recorded beautifully. That meal looked absolutely fantastic, and utterly incomparable to a freeze dried bag meal. I suspect that I'd have to take the ingredients with me otherwise the pre-prepared meal may never have survived to accompany me outdoors. Eating real food is particularly beneficial outdoors and actually enjoyable to prepare (I take my outdoor kitchen seriously). Nice thing about cooking over an open fire or twig stove is that fuel is plentiful. Thank you for sharing this lovely video.

Hey there thanks very much for an awesome comment. I have fond memories of this cook. The location was amazing and the camera really picked up on the colours. The pie, I must do again, it was soooo nice. The twig stove are great, as you say plenty of fuel about. I use them everywhere, easy to carry, handy to use. I like the name you use. I have 3 cats, so naughty 😅. Thanks for taking the time to watch and I really love your comment. Thanks Chris

Good simple food in a beautiful space (despite the rubbish left by scum!). Maybe you could get the oven effect by placing the smaller mess tin on a bed of embers and use the larger one inverted as a lid covered in embers, or as a lid filled with embers. Good luck with your future experiments.

Hello, thanks that's a great idea, you're right the bigger tin can fit over the other and it would be perfect to do that, I will give it a go. I think next time I will use the embers from the fire. That particular place I visited has a lot of trouble with the wild campers through the spring and summer, it's quite a problem, one that may never been sorted, if they took their rubbish away people would get less angry and there would be less of an issue, maybe hopefully one day. Thank you for your feed back and comment, it's awesome to hear from you, thanks Chris.

I was a little confused when you said you were camping in Scotland - you sound more like one of our cousins from across the ditch! You may want to try a small trivet inside your larger pot to keep the mess tin off the bottom - I use a small one I made for a Dutch oven to bake in. Cheers from Australia.

Ha Ha hello, indeed I am from NZ but now live in Scotland, it confuses a lot of people. A trivet is something I need to get. I did put a wee grate in the bottom there and it stopped it catching so it was all good. Baking in the dutch Oven is awesome, food comes out so nice from the Dutch Oven, well gretting to you in Australia, cheers for watching.

Agree ugh I get really peeved when people leave their trash! We have only one “Hiking” trail here in my little town and the entrance has a big dumpster for trash yet people are too lazy to do so. The last time I was there with my dog we cleaned up a tree that someone had decorated with empty soda cans 😡 so annoying I can’t stand litter bugs!

Hi Mrs Ryan, that's such an annoyance and shame, such natural spots are for all to enjoy and you like to head out there for a bit of clean air and walking. That particular loch I was at is a problem area, spring and summer weekend wild campers, a ranger was stabbed two years ago, so it's not been good with the angry locals. Ive been in the middle of a forest and found an empty tent, it's spooky. Education is really the only wat to tackle it...that and a hefty fine😎😎. I think it's good to raise awareness and maybe one day we can start a walk in a nice clean area!. thank you as always, Chris

Just a tip, use a wooden or silicone spoon to prepare the food, the way you are doing it you are certainly contaminating the food with aluminum, which causes a series of health problems. Aluminum is a very soft metal, scraping it with a steel cutlery releases small aluminum particles that, when ingested, remain in the human body forever, this is metal contamination. Aluminum is very dangerous as the particles do not corrode over time, and tend to lodge in the brain. These lunch boxes are used by the armed forces to heat water and freeze-dried food bags, not to cook directly in them. Anyway, I really like your videos, congratulations

Delicious looking experiment Chris. You really put the effort in for that meal. I bet the leftovers (if indeed you left any!😉 ) would be tasty cold too if you were off on a hike after. I don't understand the mentality to seek out a pristine place, and then leave it in a mess. Good practical ideas for an excellent meal there, cheers.

Cheers Gregor. No leftovers ha ha, but I think next time I'll make up two messtins worth of food and store one in the fridge for a day or two and theres a meal that I can either put in the oven at home or cook the way that I did, nice and easy. That area is a problem area, so much so the police patrol it, someone was stabbed two years ago there, a ranger I think. But still they come, theres signs saying save our loch etc. I once found a tent in a big forest, it was spooky, alone like that, gives me a chill, abandoned such a shame. cheers for watching Gregor.

That was a very successful cook Chris 👌. Looked great to me. Never tried baked beans in my cottage pie before but I will now. Noted some beaver activity at the Loch too. Did you have any sightings? As for the litter louts, well let's just say it really makes my piss itch 😡😡. When will folk learn. Take care buddy and thanks for sharing another fantastic recipe with us. Atb, J 👍.

Hi Jason, sightings of beaver can be quite a rare thing, but always a joy to see one, no luck this day. they had an official release of beaver at Knapdale forest and they are struggling a bit, yet by me, someone released some and we nowhave a couple of thousand believe it or not, they are everywhere ha ha. Jason you have not lived until you've had beans with your mince! They will never learn Jason, it's up to us to show the way though, hope you're well buddy, cheers Chris
