Great walkaround video. I haven't seen a 108 in many years, back in the late 70's / early 80's there were 2 or 3 at the Hamilton, ON show each year (including one of the nose gear birds.)

Mrcaffinebean With all the vintage war aircrafts Kermit owns & his years flying acrobatics, he probably has hundreds, if not thousands of connections to ppl in the vintage aircraft industry, that he can source parts from. What an amazing way to spend your life & your time! Sourcing parts, acquiring vintage war planes, & flying them from your own personal airfield & hangers. Not to mention, having your own staff of specialists, employed to restore & maintain your fleet. I can't think of too many better ways to spend your money & time. So awesome!

When I was stationed in Alamogordo NM in the mid 80s I stopped by the little airport to look around. Heard of a few used ultralight aircraft and wanted to look at them. Just strolling around I see a hanger door open and of course I looked in and seen a 108 a guy was working on. Never seen one before. Didn't think to much about it and moved on. If I remember right it was blue and white just like yours. I wonder.

+KermitWeeksBlogVideo *Thanks for an article about an exact contemporary of the 109 for general aviation.* The Bayerische Flugzeugwerke started building several Wilhelm Messserschmitt designs starting in 1935; the 108 and 109 share a narrow-track retractable undercarriage for road-portability on the ground. All were quite robust for their era.

Man this is good stuff! All kinds of things I didn't know. Like what the small prop was for and the use of magnesium in the wingtips, and the fact that you can TIG weld magnisium (I used to TIG weld but had no idea). This plane is like the predecessor of the Spitfire which won the Schneider Trophey in 1931 (Supermarine S.6B. ) More Mechanic's Corner please!

They still make aluminum civil aviation aircraft with reciprocating engines. Did you think otherwise or are you just waxing nostalgic because that's the "thing" to do in comment sections about "historic" vehicles?
@WiltedSnausage207
@WiltedSnausage207 6 жыл бұрын
The difference between the planes of today is that the cockpit isn't filled with Ipads and Garmins, the paint lines are simple yet very pleasing to the eye, and it was built in an era where the plane was made and you actually had to have skill to fly it compared to all of the aircraft made today where it is built around any average joe pilot being able to hop in and go. It's not about the plane specifically, although it is a beautiful piece of hardware, but it is about the bygone era of actual flying.

The holes towards the tail could have gotten elongated from using a tow bar that didn't fit right or one that was wore out from being used alot. It's still common practice on folding wing aircraft to hook a tow bar through the tail for towing. I read an old Avid Flyer construction manual earlier today and it also tows this way.

Mike Hawkins. Three of these aircraft were owned by the German Embassy in London in 1939. They were taken over, painted in standard RAF green/brown/duck egg blue camouflage with roundels. Named "Aldon" they were based at RAF Andover in Hampshire. I saw one fly once, but the word was that pilots would not fly them in case they were taken for a Bf 109 ! This was a reasonable assumption at that time.

Too be fair, the "Faux 109" colors are often the way they appeared in military service, but agreed that it does look very good in this creme and white scheme. (if you're interested, look at the color schemes included in Eduard's 1/48 kits of the 108, they are all historical military schemes that it flew in, look very much like 109s, but have some interesting ones, one in Yugoslavian markings, as well as one in dark blue that seems to have been one of the factory colors, but with a lighter underside and snake painted along the fuselage)

I hope they keep the colour scheme it has at the moment I do not know exactly why but I really like it. For some reason I did not know a lot about the 108 until I watched this video and have now fallen in love with it I especially like the interior those wonderful leather seats and sun blinds and the whole canopy fuselage looks very slippery.
