This plebeian (at the time an EFL teacher at a university in Anyang, southwest of Seoul) was actually in the audience for this concert performance. Sitting in the choir loft, however, so not visible in the video to prove my contention...^^

In my opinion, Takashi Harada is the ondist that gives the best rendition of this masterpiece. Movements 2 and 5 at his very best. 👏🏻

At 39:21: The ultimate note of Joie du sang des étoiles played perfectly. I hope that the ultimate note of the entire symphony is played as brilliantly. (It was.)

서울시향이 세계적인 오케스트라가 될 뻔도 했는데 왜 그렇게 기어이 쫓아버렸을까? 분통함을 금할 수가 없네요!

You've got it the wrong way round. First performed in 1949, it influenced subsequent film scores.

Not sure how you can say that after hearing Chung and the gang set the universe in motion by holding the very last note seemingly forever (yes, this Canuckistanian then in exile was at the performance. An American colleague, a percussionust, in a different Korean orchestra was left in awe after this concert, and since he said his band was going to be doing the Tarantula-Symphony later the next season, presumably he knew the piece well enough)

@@ColinWrubleski-eq5sh There's something called too much of a good thing and the last note here is one of them. Much prefer Dudamel and Järvi's interpretation of this work than Chung and his Seoul band. The Asian symphonies are great in works of Brahms and the like but not the modern like Messiaen.

@@jonnieinbangkok that's because this performance was given in the second or third year of Chung's term. I remember Brahms 4th symphony performance, it was also sometime around 2008, the SeoulPhil couldn't play good string sound. It got better year by year, and now they play much better and cover quite a large selection of repertoire. But also I want to remind you that Myung-whun Chung recorded the first revised version of this symphony back in the 1990, with the supervision of Messiaen. Therefore, one can assume he did his best in terms of interpretation.

@@jonnieinbangkok the final note HAS to go on seemingly forever. although the effect works so much better in person when the crescendo is really constant through the note. imo it has to get to the point of essentially being white noise, the tam-tam and cymbals overtaking the rest of the orchestra and filling every single corner of the concert hall. the shorter final chords are so disappointing in my opinion, the symphony demands a moment of pure rapture and eternity after all the chaos and craziness that comes before.
