While I think they are really cool and the hardware has come a long way since the first smart glasses I tried, there are still a lot of questions to be answered here. Let's take a deep dive on my experience with them and see how they fare in public.

I've been actually surprised it how good the meta voice assistant is although I selected a Australian voice, and now I get all my temperatures reported in Celsius. 😅

Dude, very solid review! The privacy aspect is super interesting. People walk around with cell phones all day long without any indicator lights when they're filming or taking photos. But I do get why when on your face, people feel differently about that. Great work Vladimir!

People seem to be more concerned with cameras on glasses than cameras on phones.

Certainly, it's quite obvious when you are recording on your phone even if you try to do it discretely. The glasses are just super incognito if you get the gloss black version. The matte black at 1:45 and the see thru models they offer are much less discrete.

Yes. Because someone filming you with a phone is obvious. So you will say that the glasses have an indicator light, right? So did Google Glass. And a mod to switch that light off arrived about 24 hours after Glassholes became a thing.

great review man! I liked your brazilian yellow T-shirt:) ! Really apreciated see tennis match with meta glasses. I bought a transition lens version and a will pick-up in 3 days. I will used in Disneyworld and Universal Studios Orlando. I hope that I don't lose this meta glasses in a roller coaster loop!

I'm still hopeful they will update this generation to have a longer record limit! It would be an easy software push, when you livestream for example with them there is no record limit! Appreciate the kind words 😃

Great review You're making me homesick I lived at 228 Beacon Street from 1977 to 1983.. (BU/SED - 80) ...some of the best years of my life. 🥰 I miss the Back Bay! (And all the Berkelee College of Music kids playing on the corners) 😉 ... and I love these glasses! 🥰 I have the black framed transition version, and they're great because you can wear them all the time... I got the black frames with the green transitions about 6 weeks ago and they're fantastic You can wear them indoors and out they change relatively quickly not instantaneously by any means but within 60 seconds of walking outside they darkened up nicely and within 2 minutes they're black... The reverse is true walking indoors, sometimes if I walk into a relatively dark place, I'll slide them up on top of my head for a min. to give them time to lighten up... 👍🏽😎🤓

The idea is to wear it mostly indoors.. I just found out I need glasses 😵💫 and since I’m gonna look like a nerd.. I have to go all the way and have freaking AI on my face 🤣 the only use I can think of for the camera is when I ride the motorcycle. But I’m not into posting videos on social media that much.

@KlauV This is why they need to up the record limit. Let's say you were going somewhere on your motorcycle 20-30mins away, you could record the entire time in case anything happens, listen to music, still hear your environment, take hands free calls etc. Then if it fills up the memory... delete that clip and re-record on your way home. It's like the perfect motorcycle dash cam 📹

@GoldMineArcade Nice, another solid option is the black frame with amber lenses. You can wear them inside and out, transition ones don't turn inside a car for example

Great review! I'm definitely planning on getting a pair soon. However, given the frame and the tech inside and in order to save a couple of bucks. Do you think it's possible to have transition prescription lenses installed from a different optical shop instead of ordering it from the Ray Ban store?

Good call! If you pause at 12:37 you can see all of the sellers that have them. Perhaps some of those would be cheaper for lense installation. Or I would lookup shops that can install lenses to the size wayfarer or headliner equivalent sized frames near you

However, unfortunately none of these shops are available in my country...Hence why I'm planning on purchasing them as regular shades and then changing the lenses to prescriptions ones from a 3rd party optical shop. Just to clarify, the frames are exactly the same as regular wayfarers or headliners? Therefore, changing the lenses wouldn't require to unscrew and open up the frames?

I'm not entirely sure, tomorrow I have to return something at the post office and the ray-ban store is near it. I'll pop in to ask them if the smart glass lenses are exactly the same as the standard equivalent, stay tuned. What country are you in?@@ochoboko

@ochoboko Hey Gabriel, I popped into the store yest, the lady wasn't 100% sure but she did give some sound advice. The standard wayfarers have a larger tilt to the frame/lense and because they are smart glasses she didn't reccomend getting them done by a random shop as that wouldn't be covered in the warranty. But if they are familiar with Ray Ban products I would say you would be ok. She didn't know if they were identical lenses as the standard wayfarer fyi but I can't imagine they are too diff. If you get second hand lenses/prescription they will NOT be covered under warranty so you know. Hopefully that information is helpful to ya, her reccomendation was to get it done at a lenscrafters as the lense warranty is covered and body because they are an official partner but I'm assuming you don't have those in the Phillipines 😅

I think the glasses allow for a very natural way of taking pictures. As for the privacy concerns, I find it very interesting. I am a blind user, and would have no way of knowing whether someone was recording me with a phone or whatever unless they told me. If I hadn’t purchased the glasses already, your review would’ve pushed me in that direction! I find the sound recording beyond acceptable!

My wife is officially impaired and I was considering these glasses for her because of the new AI tools and the ability to take photos. As a blind user, what do you think of the AI and your overall experience?

@grofilms621 Hello, tbh the AI is quite rudimentary right now. They are expecting a push next year that will unlock the visual component. You know I had never considered this as a tool for blind people, but it could really be something spectacular when the update comes. I'll certainly be doing an update video when that launches and that seems like a useful topic to discuss for sure

nice! looks like the AI coming up will be a big step up for the legally blind community- there are apps like BemyAI that have chatgpt4 built in so anyone can take a picture and have it described. However having it on glasses would be much more convenient and conversational. Love the idea of "Ai on the go" I would appreciate any insight on that end of the updates! @@grofilms621 videos and photos are easily managed in the app. I think that I have actually successfully taken good quality photos, and videos that are post worthy. The glasses do a nice job of focusing. Haven’t done anything with editing the videos, though! I am using the Be My Eyes be my AI feature to get descriptions of my photos and a bit of description from the videos, although it’s not really made for that. Keep in mind that I have only been playing for a week!

the 60 second limit makes these a hard pass for now. landscape would be a nice upgrade. hopefully a different company that isnt run by paychos uses similar tech in a jailbroken product without all the stupid limits and grandma meta app login requirement

Another good one, Vlad. Your review had me thinking about picking a pair of these up for a few weeks - they are a bit pricey though and I do wonder what their 'lifespan' will be before the next iteration. In terms of you wishing you had gotten the transition glasses to utilize these further through the day/night also had me thinking. On one hand, wearing them later at night and still being able to see would be nice, on the other, for instance when driving, you'd be at a disadvantage. Modern car windows are UV blocking so you wouldn't be able to utilize the sunglasses aspect of them while in the car. I wear sunglasses primarily in the car, but with these I would for sure use them in other creative ways. Still not sure which one to get, if any. Anyways, thanks for another high quality review.

There are 3 different kinds of transitions you can put on glasses. One of them works even inside cars, it's just more expensive

Love the gift you gave those musicians! (As a former full time busker, that sort of human connection is the best feeling). The not so practical part of the transition lenses is if you're driving in the sun, the windshield will block the UV and your lenses won't transition into sunglasses... Also curious: how did you feel framing your videos? With the camera being on the left side, did you feel you had to move your head in an unnatural way / slightly off to the side in order to frame your shots properly? Does this make for any awkward social interactions while recording? The lack of horizontal framing is a real bummer...

I'll be honest when I made those recordings it was early in my ownership before I had ever seen any footage from it yet except for the car pov. So those were just naturally how I moved, didn't focus on framing whatsoever. Once I saw some of the footage where my hat was always in the top of the scene I became more cognizant of that for framing but would always forget when I was wearing a hat. I feel a camera sensor would be more intuitive in the center bridge but understandable that it wouldn't look great there. Yea the transitions are tricky sometimes

@@VladimirKostek -- I appreciate your response. I didn't think about the hat issue until your video but that's a good point too. I managed to try them two days ago at a Ray Ban store: I was happily surprised that the ultra wide lens does enough to not make framing too counter-intuitive when talking to someone, but it does frame it slightly to the side as I suspected. Regardless, there are quite a few issues that still have me standoffish about investing in this model. Namely the lack of horizontal framing, the poor nighttime recording capabilites, the UV issue with transition lenses when driving against the sun, and the streaming quality diminishing drastically depending on one's phone signal. I also wonder how fragile the hardware is regarding sand, saltwater, rain, and generally overly hot or cold temperatures. Oh and the elevated price tag once you include prescription lenses. (Or alternatively the awkwardness of using sunglasses indoors & in other low-light circumstances).

I am driving a manual car too. Well, I am deciding between this and Echo Frames. Both are at $299. Until they make an option to shoot horizontal clips and remove the 60-second limit, I will stick to Alexa glasses for I am already in the Amazon ecosystem.

I don't believe so, but you could certainly put an air tag or similar tracker in the case. Not the same I know but maybe slightly beneficial...

10:17.... I mean the car you drive is already really nice.... Can notice it has a hard time finding light. Also it now has the option to delete on the app and the phone through the app

Good to know about the app! You're right it struggles a tiny bit in high dynamic range situations, I didn't color grade any of the smart glasses footage so people could see for themselves. Thanks it's a 2011 so quite old but I take care of it! That RS4 is from 2007ish so I would be going back a couple years haha, but would love a V8 before they're extinct ☠️ 🦕 🦖

the reason from (what ive heard dont quote me) they chose white instead of red is because some people can be red/green colorblind and not be able to see the light as well? im not sure but thats one reason why the light is white.

That's kinda interesting, i'll have to research that some more. Perhaps a red middle dot with a white outside light like the snapchat specs would be a good combo.

I think we have become so soft we worry about stupid things like being recorded. Not a big deal in my opinion.

Everyone's different and that's something we have to understand using these, some people are uncomfortable if they know they're being recorded. These are such a fundamental shift in the way we record that I think it's important to let people know after if you were recording. Most probably won't care like the musicians you saw around 5:35, but I will tell you one gentleman I talked to for 15 mins at the car show I referenced was very open and told me a lot of personal things that I would not feel comfortable sharing on-line. I told him after I was recording but also mentioned to him that if he didn't want any of the footage used I would just delete it. We need different social customs with these until they are more wide-spread and the general public can tell if they are being recorded. Once more people are aware then they will have the option to simply walk away if they know they're being recorded and don't want to be. Just my 2 cents

Picture / Video image stabilisation? Would it be usefull for bike, ski, “on the move” recordings? Battery life - how long usefull time do you have at normal temperature? Is the glasses usefull for non-content creators, that dont need the upload to social medias?

At 8:27 you can see the Stabilization for 🎾. Battery life was good maybe 3 hours while recording a lot of videos, more if tou are just listening to music or on calls. I bike with them a lot as I mentioned, perhaps I will ski with them too soon. I'd say they're more meant for social media but if you share via phone then the vertical video format isn't bad, hope that answers your questions!

@@VladimirKostek thanks. Remember that i did get some inexpensive vertical full Hd video/ photo glasses. Didnt use them much, due to my own left/ right panning head motion (like helm mounted gopro) did make the viewing experience quite bad.

the question imho should be, when would you want to record someone that would not want to be filmed? If you're out in public, or at an event like a car meet, people know people are taking recordings and photos. They don't care or they're in public so there's no expectation of privacy. Nobody is going to be recording illegal activity lol. "Oh yea let me recording buying drugs" lol. The most often scenario where people will use these is being with friends and wanting to take a pic or video of the fun. You would know these people and probably have already told them about the camera glasses, unless your friends suck, they honestly wouldn't care. I know I wouldn't. So again, the question to me should be, what are you going to record that's going to present an invasion of expected privacy or upset someone? - Maybe there's paranoia gross adults could record your kids if you have kids? Sadly those ppl are probably going to use a hidden phone or something anyway. Camera glasses would probably get them beat up (rightfully so) Recording a confidential business conversation like at work would be bad... But if you don't want to get fired, uh, don't do that? - It just feels like common sense negates the concern over "privacy" I'd rather get people's candid or genuine interactions when they don't know there's a video being taken if I'm honest. - OR if you're super worried, and you're meeting someone or talking to strangers, start the introduction with "hey these glasses can record, is that okay?" and they'll be like oh okay or nah keep it off... my 2cents :) I know society (especially in the USA) is crazy and ppl throw tantrums at walmart and hate being recorded. Maybe that's what everyone is worried about lmaooo

I agree with you on a lot of this, the big issue I think you touched upon is when people know they are being recorded they act differently. These make it so you aren't, my friends and family wouldn't care but with strangers you never know. Also a lot of state laws require consent for audio recordings, so it's worth looking up your states laws if you live in the US or whichever country. Less so for video in public.

2:16 Honestly it more on pair with Raybans and other perscition lens then sunglasses as the avators optics I got with wisbang transitions lens MSRP was $100 less then what I would need as meta smarts... And the avators are not the least nore most exopensive and if you don't need wisbang lens the cost is much cheaper... Which other smart glasses are between $100-$300 and AR glasses are $500-$1,000... So yeah not bad for what you get which a Gopro is around $300.

3:20 - I was eating my meal, while watching the video, until I heard this. Hold up my guy. Maybe, just maybe, meta is trying to make it's users safe as well. A red light would attract way more attention and reaction from people. I was once recording a CEILING wiping down to the floor to do transition on my video... one tall guy that happened to be in the middle of that up to down movement got aggressive towards me trying to reach my phone. Now imagine if we stick to your beautiful idea. (Yes I understand, my case was one time scenario. )

Google Glass technical issues were not the problem. The light does not fix the privacy/legal/creepy issues because the light can be turned off, just as the Glass light was. Or physically disabled as the Glass light was. It's still a problem.

3:00 There is no expectation of privacy when you're in a public setting.....exceptions are bathrooms, dressing roomss, locker rooms and Identify information such as government / federal building where privacy information is located. I hate when I'm making a video in the parking lot and someone in the background says don't record me or my car. I don't want my license plate recorded. I say please dont go to an ATM youre being recorded.... Then I say you should take it off license plate too. Because there's tons of cameras while you're driving that is recording your license plate and you. Once again no expectation of privacy while in a public place..... Also when I was stationed in Japan Any cell phones you purchase over there had a light that truned on while recording to show that you're recording and if you take a photo it will make a shudder sound that you took a pic.

Yea unfortunately, you can zoom in a tiny bit in the vertical video without major degradation but if you crop in too much you'll notice the loss in quality

Which if you carry a phone or drive a modern car you being recorded not visually but in every other way... Tbh I bought them day 1. I tried them out at the store and didn't feel like they got as dark as I wanted (and I don't like that look) but now that I've seen other vids I know they do. Its tricky not being able to test it outside without buying. That's sometimes the price of being an early adopter. But I also think as a reviewer it's good to emphasize these things so that other people don't make the same mistake.

I bought the Ray-Ban Stories a year ago, all black, and that was the first thing I realized after wearing them for a few days... so when the meta glasses came out I bought the black frames with the transition lenses... and they're fantastic. you can wear them all the time! indoors or out... 👍🏽

Transition lenses work in direct sunlight the best. I can’t stand that they don’t get fully dark when driving because the windshield in most cars blocks UV so I still get a lot of glare off other cars and glass. They also only tint slightly in overcast weather and they looks weird only half tinted

I'm just worried people won't know they're being recorded. Sometimes you're not recording people like when I was driving for example, and then it would be nice to record for 5-10 mins. For motorcyclists this would be an amazing product if they could use it like a dash cam but they can't currently...

Recording… concern is a myth. Go into any store, you are being recorded. Any bank, any mall… ATM, “ring” doorbells- dash cams in automobiles, lift/urber rides, trains, buses, airplanes… and the list goes on. I get the “private spaces” like rest rooms / locker rooms but generally- we are being recorded 24/7 somehow, some where. They need a better argument. Just saying.

While you are correct, the different issue here is not just video it's also audio. These can capture intimate details of a conversation without anyone knowing. Public CCTV devices aren't doing that to this extent.
