In this episode of "One Scientist's Mind," Dr. Christopher Palmer, a psychiatrist and assistant professor at Harvard McLean, shares his revolutionary theory of Brain Energy. Dr. Palmer's theory proposes that all mental disorders are metabolic disorders of the brain; he explains how factors like the ketogenic diet, alcohol, marijuana, and sleep can impact mitochondrial function and ultimately our mental health. I wish the psych doctors in our hospital would worry about the diet of our bipolar and schizophrenia patients.

God bless your Mother. That is one of the saddest stories I have ever heard. We don’t have a choice about mental illness no more than we do cancer. I didn’t loose my family & home but I lost my job & then my ability to work. Thank you for your work.

He’s great and works tirelessly for sure to get this message out and provides a great deal of hope for people. You can see he’s so passionate and meticulous in how he answers questions and the diet. Saying that, I don’t think Ketogenic diets ALONE could really affect deficit, negative, dearth, ipseity and cognitive slippage symptoms in schizophrenia spectrum issues. I understand how it’s an effective treatment for epilepsy and the ups and downs of bipolar disorder and how all mental disorders are metabolic dysfunction disorders of the brain. but I don’t really see Keto ALONE treating negative symptoms of schizophrenia and other anhedonic and emotional numbness conditions. I might be wrong and hope I’m wrong

I’ve been following Lustig’s real food diet because the keto diet uses so many processed foods. I lost 20lbs as of today in the last 7 weeks by eating “real foods.” I feel tons better already. I’m still taking my meds but I expect to be reducing them over time. I know I have metabolic syndrome. I just think we can do much better with a “real food” diet than with keto. It is more sustainable and cuts out sugar.

keto just means very low carb (except for the specific old-fashioned "medical ketogenic diet" which is nutrient deficient). You can certainly eat a "real foods" keto diet.

@@tobykelsey4459 thanks for pointing that out. The main difference I have noticed is that I eat high fiber veggies and fruits and legumes aren’t off limits (even though they have carbs) because of their fiber content. I think my health got so bad I became prediabetic. I was eating what was considered keto but in an unhealthy way. I ate the cream cheese recipes, low carb processed food and drank sugar free drinks. I have since learned how unhealthy that is. I like the real foods diet and don’t want anyone to get messed up on keto like I did. Hopefully they won’t fall for the unhealthy recipes that I did-they keep popping up on social media. I seriously wish this awesome Psychiatrist would listen to Lustig on metabolic health. Lustig is on the same page but points out the dangers of the low carb high fat ketogenic diet on metabolic health. I believe this Dr is unintentionally irresponsible in recommending the keto diet as opposed to the real foods diet. The average person will most likely end up with chronic metabolic syndrome. At the same time I love his message. He is remarkable to say the least.
