I want to stress that the cylinder portion is how it sounded live, and no adding or taking anything away was done. The record was also played back with a 1902 Edison C reproducer, this uses a corrugated 33mm diameter copper diaphragm .003" thick held between rubber gaskets, the stylus is shaped like a tiny .036" dooknob, the groove is U shaped with the sound on the bottom of the groove as opposed to the sides such as a regular mono 33 or 78 has. Cylinders is known as Vertical recording.

Just wondering, How much could noise be reduced by if the room was warmer? I remember hearing that the room was colder than what would have been optimal for recording in the first of the videos.
@thenorthamericanphonograph1039
@thenorthamericanphonograph1039 4 жыл бұрын
@@xander1052 At least a few DB, I could not shock the wax too much or it would shatter. However this is actually pretty good, and to my knowledge recording, this kind of music with an acoustical recording head has never been done. Remember the playback diaphragm is only 1 5/16 in diameter with neoprene gaskets, this is hooked to the playback stylus on a floating weight and a screw-in retaining ring holds the diaphragm in place. the stylus and diaphragm are hooked with a wire C linkage the undulations of the record push and pull the stylus, and causes the fulcrum of the stylus bar to vibrate to the sound waves, and then vibrates the wire, which pushes and pulls the diaphragm to the frequencies. The response of the playback head is around 190-6,000 cps, the horn directs the sound into the room so you can hear it. The listening tubes have a lot more bass.
@xander1052

@@thenorthamericanphonograph1039 ah thanks, that's actually really interesting. The sound is definitely very impressive for such an early recording system, most people I'd assume would think the sound would be nowhere near as clear as it actually is.

To record this high spl, I had to put the recording stylus (.o39" sapphire) in the wax deeper, and yes, it bleeds through a little, this groove, though is up and down, while a gramophone goes side to side, if you want deeper you heat the wax hotter, and lower the stylus in more.
