Serendipity to stumble (?) across this. I now live in Colorado but was born in the Shenandoah Valley ... Johann Nikolaus Heischmann/Hyshman is my fourth great-grandfather. As a child, Wardensville, WV (Hardy County) was where we always held the annual Heishman family reunions. Blessings and much appreciation for this video.!

I'm always saddened when I see a home going to ruin, especially these older ones. Someone labored to make this a home. I would always rather see a home repaired and rebuilt than see all of these new cookie cutter homes popping up on cleared land.

Having vision, Such a big part of detecting. Being able to "Read" the land. Getting past today and knowing the past is just under yesterdays top soil. Back in 1980 My father was amazed history was right under My detector coil. I asked him a simple question, When you were a boy in 1925 and lost a dime, What do you think happened to it? I told him it's still there, Just like the dime a person lost in 1825. It dawned on him, Sure it would still be there TILL someone found it. I'm in WV and people have been in Martinsburg since the 1700's Last week I got a Connecticut copper 1788. Just setting there waiting for me to come along. When I show people, I still get that look of doubt from people. They don't have the "Vision"

That’s a great story and so true. I often have family and friends find it unbelievable some of the old coins I have uncovered in WV. I live just south of you in Winchester but detect in Hampshire County. I have found a William III coin there. They date from 1694-1701. I have found a Spanish Cobb in Pendleton County with the date 1718. Now these coins were likely lost in the mid 1700’s but anything in the 1700’s is an amazing find this far west in what was mostly the frontier at the time. My last video me and Ace both find Connecticut Coppers in Hampshire County. No date is visible on either coin. Martinsburg area was settled early and you are blessed there. HH….

At 14:00, that thing you found looks to me like part of a spool that held barbed wire. There would be another piece just like it with a tube inbetween about 16-18" long with a bunch of barbed wire rolled on it. One end would have a handle. 1320 ft, weighs about 80 lbs. Heavy and hard to carry. Not particularly old, but definitely farm related. Most barbed wire lasts about 20+ years. Older stuff maybe longer. (down here in south Louisiana it's called Bob War.. LOL).....👍

Maybe you can go back. But just learning the history is exciting enough. It's my favorite part. But then again I'm part of history lol. When I hear some of the other explorers saying this is so old it's from the 1960s or 70s or 80s I laugh and think that's not old but yes it is especially to these young ones in their 20s and 30s. It's just strange hearing them say that. Happy Easter to you and your family

An interesting suggestion. I can say that his descendants still live in the area and the widow who owns this has the same last name but by marriage. The Heischmann's are a well known local name so his kids didn't move far away, at least some of them stayed. The original patriot is buried in the cemetery (there are 2 on the land) but his stone is unmarked.

Is it possible to file to have this listed as a historical site and preserved?
@AppalachianHistoryDetectives
@AppalachianHistoryDetectives 2 жыл бұрын
It could based on its historical significance but currently the landowner is wanting to sell the farm so anything will have to wait until that occurs. It will take the landowner taking active preservation steps as well so a great deal of it is how much a landowner is willing to pay.

Todd, what was the reason for why they put lead on top of the roof nails? Thank you for keeping our history alive. I find it fascinating when we see the cabin, barn, mill, etc and you tell us all about the family that originally lived there and why they loved to the colonies. And then we get the rest of the story with the relics you find.
@AppalachianHistoryDetectives
@AppalachianHistoryDetectives 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Glenna thanks for asking. They used sheet metal on the roofs in the mid-1800's and only had iron nails that corroded easily (anodic galvanic reaction of 2 dissimilar metals). The lead kept the two corrosive metals from being in contact, and kept the iron from rusting do to rain and moisture. It served two purposes. The cabin's history was unknown to the owner until I revealed the research. Sadly she isn't able to restore it as she is a widow. There isn't much history from this time period left that is wood so seeing this historic structure fall into decay is sad.

I think it is why he located in the "German" settlements west of the Blue Ridge where they were more likely to receive him. I think once his unit was captured and imprisoned, which his was, when he got out and couldn't afford fare back to Germany, he decided to stay. This isn't recorded but I have no doubt he came west to the German settlements. Maybe it was a language barrier at the eastern shore that was problematic too? His family is still here and a big local name.

Taking the logs to get reused for flooring etc. 200 year old logs are first gen wood and worth a mega cash in other places then here. If they are going to be restored at least let it live on in new buildings. Guess it get back to it's trash to one person just an old places falling down . To another it's treasure .
