A spray bottle with water to clean targets, a towel to clean them, a small camera like a goPro to film you dig, sand scoop for beach digging and finally magnifying glasses for worn coins. Just some of the things that I thought of.

I like that business card Idea. A a fly fisherman I was always looking out for new access points into rivers. They were almost always without access points nearby and I had to cross onto private property. I actually had my niece who worked at a wine bottling shop brew me up some small bottles of wine, pop bottle sized. I printed up my own labels featuring a Fly and my name. It said it was a gift for crossing your property and that it was too likely too early to disturb you. I could be found (Phone#) Cell Phone if you have any concerns. I included a OH&A Insured to the bottom. I only used them 6 times (Cost of about $4.00 each) the wife drank the rest LOL! I was never called by a land owner ...ever.

Good list. I recently contacted the local city parks department and was told metal detecting is allowed in the parks but not digging. They suggested the use of a screw driver for popping targets. So that is a new item I've added to my gear. I also tend to take a blunted screwdriver when hunting river banks because many items can be caught down in the cracks between rocks and are hard to get out without something long and pointy. And speaking of hunting around rivers, a small pick can be better than a shovel in rocky stream beds.

Really helpful video for somebody starting out...With regards a finds pouch and belt, I highly recommend using a belt you can fit shoulder straps/suspenders to..I use a ex US Army ALICE web belt and shoulder harness, but you can get similar set-ups designed for construction workers. On my set up, I have my finds pouch one side and my pinpointer and hand digger the other so the weight is spread evenly around my waist. If I intend hunting a few hours away from my vehicle, I add a utility pouch at the rear to carry a drink and some lunch...This allows me to avoid taking a rucksack on most hunts, which I prefer but may not suit everyone or every circumstance...

Great Info Rob ! When I'm helping out a fellow detectorist I always explain the Need for Permits if they are planning to dig on state owned land or parks etc... Many newbies have no idea of the need for permits or the penalties that can be involved... just my 2 cents.. Love the Channel my friend !

Hi Rob from Cleveland Ohio! I am so glad I came across your channel and this video in particular! I have attempted detecting in the past with an old 1970s Whites detector with attached headphones, but apart from that, I do not have any accessories! None. So I really appreciate all of the information you provided! One thing I was also curious about is the item clipped to your shirt during the video. I assume it is a camera. What brand is it, and do you use that while detecting? Also, do you provide classes for beginners, or can recommend a class near me? Thank you again. Looking forward to more videos! Suzanne L.

Hi Suzanne. Thx for watching and subscribing. I don’t offer any classes but am happy to try and help w any questions. I would recommend scanning Facebook and google for any nearby, OH metal detecting clubs and events. Getting out with others is also a great way to learn about your machine and detecting techniques. I think you are asking about my GoPro harness? I use a GoPro Hero 7 to do my filming. Often I place it in a chest harness and have a second I camera use on a tripod. Hope that helps. You can email any other questions to thehistorydigger@gmail.com Rob

Thanks for the suggestion Wilfredo. I'm not trying to generate revenue off of any of my recommendations nor am I sponsored by any of those companies. . I also try not to favor any particular dealer or metal detecting store however most of those items are available either through metal detector dealers or other online shops. If you can't find something I mentioned I'm happy to help...just ping me at thehistorydigger@gmail.com. Thanks very much for watching and commenting.

I am brand to this. I just got my metal dector. In fact it is still in the box. I didn't realize that you had to carry so much stuff with you in addition to your metal dector. Where are the best kind of places to go when you are just starting out?
@TheHistoryDigger1
@TheHistoryDigger1 Жыл бұрын
Hi Mika. Welcome to the hobby! The essentials are really just the detector, a small digging tool, pinpointer and small finds pouch. I’d try starting out in city or county parks, beaches, fair grounds, school yards. Then try to get some permissions on private land. Also do some searches re metal detecting events or metal detecting seeded hunts. Those are also great places to learn.

I'd like to get the little digger one day Little pricey when shipping to Canada. But then again i didn't think i can get anything here for that price that is small and handy as that is.
@TheHistoryDigger1

I hear ya. The shovel itself is not bad but I can imagine the shipping probably costs as much as the shovel itself.

Google "mini" or "micro" shovels and I bet you will find a good selection. Most won't have teeth on the sides, but in reality you don't need them, as they hang up on stuff more than they cut. If you hunt woodlands regularly, a pair of hand pruners/ garden secateurs will work far better for cutting through roots in the confines of a hole. Re shovel design, the one thing that really helps is if it has "foot treads" on the tool of the blade..On a carton steel shovel these are easy enough to add later by welding. If you can get them in Canada, Roughneck do an excellent pointed "micro" shovel and also a slightly longer version known as the "mini" shovel...

Good info only I am thinking of getting out of the hobby and I just started this summer. I live in WV and the cops will put you in jail fast caught in a park/ ball field or just about any place. Very disappointed unless you have written permission your up the creek! Think I wasted my money :(
