Wow! I actually recognize something. The Peg with the square box with the pin going through it is an old roller wheel that went on the corners of old wardrobes and furniture pieces. A wooden wheel was on the pin and the peg stuck up into the bottom of the piece of furniture on the corners. the wooden wheels would often break off. I hope this helps.

To your point about the axel as a marker, it's a good idea to check deeds before doing any work around the land. I have had deeds that show borders and corners as "Pipe Set", "Boulder", "Rock", and even "Stone Pile" or "Hedge Row". People used to be much more informal about land transactions, and neighbors would gather to agree on markers because a survey was too expensive. Also, be careful about family lore, and heed any stories of GreatGreatGreatGrandparents buried yonder. A plain metal hinge may be from a simple pine coffin that has rotted away, as many early settlers wanted to stay with their land, and even "Ole Yeller" was sometimes so adored that coffins would be made for pets (our Pet Cemetery is defined by pine tree corners). Thanks for a great video!

What a fun video! You girls have beautiful land to hunt on for treasures. I just moved to a new old home in November, and I can't wait until spring when I can go explore the woods behind my house. The place was built in 1927, and the ground slopes down into a small wooded area where people have discarded and dumped bottles and junk. My neighbor told me he'd cleaned up the area once, but I'm really hoping there are bits buried under the surface that he'd missed. I bought a used metal detector last summer, in anticipation of searching for finds.

What an interesting video! Love the old perfume bottle. Years ago a drive-in movie theater in my hometown closed permanently, and was later replaced by a restaurant and parking lot. One Saturday afternoon my daddy took us three kids to the abandoned theater area to try out his metal detector 'toy', a gift from a relative. Within a few minutes we had found over seven dollars in loose coins near where the theater's outdoor concession stand had once been. No doubt people buying snacks before the movie accidentally dropped dimes, quarters etc. in the grass in the semi-darkness and didn't realize it. Our excitement level was so high when we counted the coins, you would've thought we won the lottery!

@@thepressleygirls whenever I see y'all use language a little different I wonder if it's an Appalachian thing. Your mama has done stuff on that. Generally people say pastime which is from the 15th century, a translation of the French of the time, _passe-temps_ meaning just something people would do to pass the time which is what y'all said, so you can see why it makes a language geek like me curious. It's truer to the original French than what most people say now. In Appalachia a lot of old ways of saying things are preserved, some things are from times before North America was settled. And y'all clog like people from around Newcastle on Tyne which is the extreme Northeast of England, but often through the centuries has been the extreme Southeast of Scotland. The ownership's gone back and forth a lot. Here's an example which even includes some Morris Dancers. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ftp1hrimppjLhJc.html Another example is the singers/cloggers from next door to there, from Tyne and Wear, (the River Tyne an the River Wear run through the region) the Unthanks who have a similar clogging style to you and sing the traditional music from their area. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b8eko9te2pfOpX0.html It all ties together in my brain and makes me happy:) Y'all look like you could be cousins with the Unthanks. I suspect y'all know all this already, having an interest in these things, but people that love y'all and love the old times would be happy to know all of this, I think.

When I was the pastor of an old city church, we owned a 100 year old house that we were tearing down. One day some men were walking on the property sinking long metal rods into the ground. Turns out they were looking for where the old outhouses were located. In the old days, everyone used the outhouse to dump their garbage. When they found the sights they dug them up and pulled out all manner of treasure. Mostly old bottles and dishes but also some old tools, pots and pans. It was true history right under our feet and we didn't even know it.

Eddie's onto something but it's more likely the chrome base that a glass or plastic reflector was attached to instead of a light.. The reflector probably had a protrusion that snapped thru the square hole and the threaded part went into the car or truck. From the shape of it, I'd guess it's pretty old . . . before WWII. The "T" and 4 letters under it might allow you to identify what it was better and maybe even tell you what kind of car. As for the axle being a boundary marker, deeds - if they were recorded at the court house - could tell you. I think it's just part of the same car that was abandoned there that the chromed strip and reflector plate came from. The RH definitely stands for Right Hand (not my initials :)) which means it would have gone on the passenger side.
@davidstoddard9160
@davidstoddard9160 Жыл бұрын
The square hole is that shape because on both ends they install what is called a stove bolt, and if you look up a picture of a stove bolt you will see the reason the hole is square and not round. On the bolt is what is called a square shoulder which prevents the bolt from turning, while you tighten a nut on the other end of the bolt which also allows for a beveled head on the outside where you see it after installed.

@@thepressleygirls I wish I could go back to that time and live too. Hell, I wish I could go back to 1985 when I look at today’s culture. I so very much enjoyed watching you digging around looking at the past. I hope you do another one like this.

Looks like a fun and very interesting hobby! Especially on your family mountain. And with your twin! Wonder if the shiny oval thing was like a side view mirror of a car or something. Have a great day!🌻

Love yellow videos. When I was growing we did a lot of stuff outside. I miss those days. Where we lived bikes was useless due to as there was so sandy so we rode horses evey where. I have been riding horses since I was bid enough to sit on one. It seems likeI we were raised like yell have been. I thought the good Ole days were gone but maybe not. I was raised in southeast Texas. Now days so much has changed in this part of the country I just about to hated here. But my family is still here and I hate to leave. Anyways I so enjoy yells videos.

The perfume is a Prince Matchibelli bottle. I wonder if the oval plate is like a FORD badge that was mounted on the back of a truck tailgate. Fun vid.

I've always thought that would be fun. Thanks for taking us along on the adventure. Around my area you have to be careful to not disturb pipes and buried lines, but I'm guessing that's less of an issue on family land.

That was an axel shaft most likely from a ford car or truck, because of the flange with 4 holes. ❤

Not a horse shoe ... Even better! That is an ox shoe! Oxen have split hooves and take two half shoes. They used to shoe them when they worked, just like horses. They often used oxen to drag trees out for fire wood and lumber

I live in north western North Carolina in the mountains and have been finding some really neat stuff. I'm glad I'm not the only one finding old car axles lol. The thing you found you said looks like a buckle with a pin in it is actually an old furniture caster, would have had a wooden wheel on it.

4:40 is a vehicle axle 14:25 appears to me as a wheel axle assembly for something like a rolling office chair or bed. Wheel has rotted from the 'pin' axel and long pointy part went into the chair or bed frame. BTW: The half horseshoe. We find a few out here at old mine sites, but mostly mule shoes. They used mules to haul ore from the mines and were always pulling and on their toes wearing out the front of the shoe and finally breaking, and throwing the shoe.

That was an old car axel. Sometimes people would drive them in the ground to mark the property coner or line. It would be interesting to see what you would find at a place where the people would Ford the creek and river ect.
