Hey Paul....Just gotta tell you that I really enjoy your shows ! It is nice to see a " maker " who does not come across as if they know all the answers . I,m sure you realize that we learn as much from our failures as we do from our successes. ANYWAY..... I have a special effects company and mix many products (to make some pretty strange things ) to get a desired object. I am just learning about forges and have learned a lot from you. My forge is built in a propane tank...top cut off and hinged . The mix I used (partially for cost...a bit for" pourability ") is castable refractive material , " Hot mud " , white thin set , ( tile cement ) sand and of course water....equal amounts . The end result is perfect...( after a few days of drying and burning ) it stands up greatly under expansion and contraction , high heat and cooling. Two ports for flame and serious heat has had little to no effect on it...and it fits and looks professional.( I welded a few screws to the inside of both the top and sides of the interior of the forge before pouring and it holds it very secure when encased in the " mix ") Just some free info. Thanks and keep it up.... I love it ! ..

The crucible tong does work great. I made one and it works even with my very bad welding skills. I like how you don't need two tools. Thus saves the crucible from cooling down and your casts come out a little bit better.

@6:00, About the burner flared tips, with both on my single and my double burners, neither would keep the flame going without them. With forced air it was worse, the flames would seem to move away from the tip until it seemed to blow itself out. With the flared tips on the ends, no problems at all.

You can cast steel. We machine cast steel at work. We have a foundry close by that cast parts for railroad cars and they are indeed cast steel. We have machined some of them. They use a carbon arc furnace. basically just three large carbons that are hooked to the power lines and plunged down into a crucible of scrap steel. Takes huge amounts of electricity.

Normally most freezers you have in your home keep the temp about 0 F. If you live in a place that gets below 0 F in the winter you can go to your freezer to warm up. I live in Hawaii and in the last few days it got so cold we talked about possibly wearing long pants instead of shorts.

How do you break apart car wheels? I've got a set of truck wheels but I'm having a really hard time breaking it up to fit in the crucible.
@PaulsGarage
@PaulsGarage 6 жыл бұрын
I've never done it, but I hear one method is to set the wheel on top of a camp fire for a while. It wont melt on the open but it gets hot and weak. Then take it off the fire, set on the ground (careful because scalding hot) and bash it into tiny chunks with a sledge hammer. I'm sure just cutting with a saw would also work.

How do you know the fire want feed back threw the burner bact to the supply tank and cause a bad explosion?
@PaulsGarage
@PaulsGarage Жыл бұрын
The hose feeding the burner, and the tank, are full 100% with propane. There is no air in there. Pure propane can't burn, you need a mixture of fuel AND air or it doesn't light, and that mixture needs to be perfect or it still won't burn well.

Taow made a steel crusable what are your opinions on that
@PaulsGarage
@PaulsGarage 6 жыл бұрын
Haven’t seen that, I’ll have to check it out. Steel as a crucible usually works for aluminum a few times (aluminum will dissolve the steel and start leaking), or for other metals like zinc and tin. I wouldn’t use it for copper, that’s too hot and the steel would weaken
@MrAndrew990
@MrAndrew990 6 жыл бұрын
Paul's Garage yeah he used 1/4 inch square tubing. Has a lot of thermal mass and it's really cheap. Won't crack but would deteriorate over a longer period of time financially a better choice than graphite in my opinion.
@adinin
@adinin 6 жыл бұрын
Doesn't he use an electric furnace? That would be a lot less oxidization, and much longer life. Using steel or iron in a charcoal or propane furnace means you lose a lot to scale on the outside. It might be cheaper, but when it comes to carrying around molten metal the extra $20 is worth the piece of mind...

Another good source of aluminum is computer hard drives. The casing and sometimes the plates are cast aluminum. Just takes a bit of work to take them apart, or melt the whole thing and pick out the extra bits... An excellent way of making sure hackers or the CIA don't get your info.

I want to figure out how to alloy these cans into something that you'd consider castable aluminum.
@PaulsGarage
@PaulsGarage 6 жыл бұрын
Add silicon. The most common way is to get discarded cast aluminum pistons, often called hyperutectic cast pistons, as they have about double the silicon content of normal cast aluminum, then melt it 50/50 with ingots from cans.
@BPollard86
@BPollard86 6 жыл бұрын
That's a neat way to do it! Dilution, I like it. I've been stockpiling cans for the past year and a half. It's starting to take up too much space. I'm a big fan of metalworking in part from welding years ago and I've been wanting to get back into it but with casting this time around. I haven't dove deep enough into techniques of alloying to know the details and they don't exactly teach that in the chemistry coursework. I like the idea of sourcing materials from what would otherwise be garbage, or use some chemistry to get what I need.

How much satanite did you use? And what does it do for kaowool?
@PaulsGarage
@PaulsGarage 6 жыл бұрын
I used about 5lbs, but I’ll probably add coats of it eventually. For kaowool it prevents the flame from contacting the kaowool. The protection is important because the flame is far hotter than kaowool can handle, so it will become stiff and brittle. Little fibers of kaowool will then shoot out the top and if you get it in your lungs it causes lots of problems. The satanite also helps even out the heat in the furnace so you don’t have hot spots as bad. Overall it’s VERY good stuff

Paul's Garage apparently my dad doesn’t trust the website so would some Home Depot 2550 degree mortar work instead?
@PaulsGarage
@PaulsGarage 6 жыл бұрын
No the mortar from home improvement stores is designed to hold heavy fire bricks together (like when building a fancy brick bbq grill), not as a coating for kaowool. It will get all crumbly, and 2550 just isn’t high enough. Satanite is good for 3200

I’ve heard you can lay the car wheels on top of a camp fire to heat them up, then pound them to pieces with a sledge hammer. That or cutting disk on a grinder
@darktideryezing
@darktideryezing 6 жыл бұрын
I've tried the sledge with them cold (no dice) and I put a metal cutting disk on a circular saw and combined with a cutting disk on a grinder I was able to cut one in half, but I've got a LONG way to go before I could get chunks that would fit into my crucible. I've taken a sledge to car engine parts and those have shattered nicely. The wheels are a bit more difficult. I'll have to try a camp fire later (it'll help ward off the New Hampshire cold too)

it messes with the alloy. alloys are very specific. Yellow brass is about 2/3 copper, 1/3 zinc. Red brass is 85% copper, 5% each zinc, lead, and tin. Mix those and you get a weird conglomeration that probably won't work as well as either individually

@@PaulsGarage oh, didn't know that there was lead and stuff in red brass. thought you could make normal brass by just mixing red and yellow.

I suggest casting your own aluminum bronze tools. The hammer must feel very lonely now, it needs company. Also, please get Patreon. I am quite generous on Patreon.

Paul's Garage ahhh, ok. I've seen those in dallas. Never been in them. I use a heater used by painters to heat my garage. Our temps have been in the 20s, extremely cold for Texas, and the propane heater keeps my garage very warm. So I can work out there.
