Project Inspired By:
Two different friends that let me study the propane torches they made from designs found on the internet. After experimenting independently, I developed the two designs into this hybrid.
Project History & More Info:
A year after I made my charcoal foundry (bit.ly/PopCanMelting), a friend named Chris came by to visit, and to show me a foundry he'd made out of a propane tank, and refractory cement. His was more expensive to construct, but was made to last longer, and he powered it with propane instead of charcoal.
He said the burner plans he followed were the common "Ron Reil" design, which for some reason I had never heard of.
I bought the plumbing parts from Home Depot with intentions to build the torch, but they just sat on my worktable for months as I worked on developing other projects first.
After a considerable amount of time, a young man named Shadrick came to my house and noticed the plumbing parts on my table and asked if I was making a propane burner. To my surprise, he'd made a propane foundry himself and had been using it to forge steel, melt aluminum, and make knives for over a year.
His assembly was completely different from the one Chris had, and since I really didn't have much idea of how propane burners worked at all, I was interested in reverse engineering the science behind it.
I realized that the purpose of the burner was to mix certain amounts of fuel and air to achieve the hottest temperature possible, and the cleanest burn.
I played with different lengths of tubing, and stumbled on the realization that by controlling the air-flow through the intake port, I could adjust the flame completely, and use any length of pipe I wanted. I also noticed that without a nozzle on the end, the burner wouldn't work.
I quickly developed some prototypes for an air regulator design I made from the lid of a tuna can, and it worked perfectly!
My final design was a hybrid of the two systems, with most of the plumbing parts based around the Ron Reil assembly, and the rest based on the connections I saw on Shad's system.

RIP This is THE video that got me started on what eventually became a metal fabrication shop. Just a quick FYI for anyone about to make this: The brass fittings are made to seal against one another, so you shouldn't need tape, just really crank them down hard when screwing them together. BUT... when you attach brass to steel (or some other metal), you DO want to use tape but not the white thread tape. They make a thread tape specifically for flammable gas that is yellow in color that you should use here. I believe it's because the white tape deteriorates when used in gas systems

I believe it's because of gas molecules can slip through the white tape but the yellow tape has a higher concentration of Teflon in it which prevents that from happening.

For those looking to build this, there's some errors in the parts list. The pipe is 3/4" not 1" pipe. The reducer you drill into should be 1 1/4" to 3/4" reducer. The flare end is made of a 1" to 3/4" reducer. Do NOT use galvanized pipe (the shiny pipe) in any of this. Use black pipe. Also, you can use the same tap to do the nozzle as well as the thumb screws. Just buy the right size thumb screws. ( My local HD didn't have a tap for the thumb screw size used in the vid) (This is very awesome. I'm in the process of building one based on these specs. I built one around a 1" pipe with reducers / flares to fit that. But I will be redoing it with the 3/4" pipe and reducers soon.)

I wish I saw your comment earlier. I didn't realise the front flare was the wrong size until after I finished it and wanted to screw it on as finishing part. I have built everything with a 1inch tube as smallest size, but am using a screwable rear to let air in (or close off) so bigger size should be fine. However I now need a new front 'reducer' from 1" to something slightly bigger, perhaps a 1 1/4 "to 1"? What is the reason you are going to / went to 3/4 inch?

@@daedelus_ I just started getting the pieces to this today. I noticed as I was picking them up in Lowes that galvanized wasn't the right product to use as it's toxic when burns, as its mentioned on another video about the foundry and why the plaster mix should be as close to the top as possible.. So I picked the black steel pieces. I was make shift putting it together while picking the parts and noticed the 1" tube wasn't going to work with the 1" reducer. Luckily, I saw a 1 1/2" reducer to 3/4" in stock (which my other lowe's and HD stores didnt have). And I upgraded from a 1" x 6" steel pipe to a 3/4" x 12" pipe and was cheaper. Unfortunately the rest of the items I had to order from amazon so I have to wait a few days to piece it together and drill all the parts.

Simply put the leg on by getting a drill and drill 1/2" deep threaded to 1/512" and screw in the included screws labeled a dark gray among the other darker grays, while you slowly have someone screwing that screw, attach the batteries that are totally included that are not included and simply stab the battery with a butcher knife to cause an explosion if there is no explosion try putting them in a mini microwave on the spot, you will find that the chair leg is done simply repeat to move on attaching the back support.

First off, gotta say your videos are awesome. Always enjoy what you show us. Made the metal melting foundry and fired it up a few days ago with the charcoal. It works but what a pain to keep feeding it charcoal. Went through 3/4 of a bag just to get a few pounds. So I decided to go the propane route, however I didn't want to assemble anything. I remembered I had bought a harbor freight "flame thrower" to help.......control weeds (ok, I just wanted to play with it really!) so I made the inlet hole a bit bigger to 3" to accommodate the flame throwers nozzle. Fired it up and turned the air valve up about half way. Boy did that do the trick! So much easier than charcoal! Thanks for everything you do Grant! Keep up the great work!!

I have a little larger foundry I built and really didn't care for the hassle of charcoal. After doing a little research I came across your torch video and decided to give it a try. Its works great even with my larger foundry and crucible. Thanks for the ideas. I've also build a styro slicer. It also turn out great. I added a LED to the wiring so I can clearly see when its powered on. Great Videos. always looking forward to the next one.

omg... I can not even express my thanks into words rn. the parts list you made. you included EVERYthing needed included the little screws. that saved a lot of searching and Gatorade throwing. I now know that the price of pretty much everything is $303.67. that includes the crucible and wool and all the parts for the blaster. I'm not sure if you check this very often, or if you write back, but I'm giving it a shot. I've been trying to build the propane torch based on your video (so naturally it isn't exact), but I've hit a couple snags. It may sound silly, but I don't know for sure what size screw to use. I assume it's a #5 AKA 1/8in, but I wanted to be totally sure. I also had to make an assumption with the pipe and 1in reducer coupling, and figured the pipe had to be 1/2in by 6in. I'm also really hoping that the 1 1/2 in reducer coupling is supposed to go down to 1/2in. If it isn't too much trouble, I'd appreciate some advice because I don't play around with explosive gases. Thanks, Brian.

Hey Grant, me and my friend are going to draw inspiration from your foundry and propane torch videos to make our own foundry, but instead of using a steel bucket, we are going to use an empty gas canister to create a wider/ larger foundry. Obviously, there are a LOT of replies. Without having read them all, I imagine someone has already commented on this. Even so, I'm sure it is worth repeating: First of all, these videos are awesome! The instructions are very clear & organized. The audio and video quality are top-notch. That being said, I was very surprised to discover you didn't mention the diameter of the main pipe. Because of that, I looked at the link you created for the parts list. There, the pipe is listed as 1 inch diameter by 6 inches long. Luckily, I did not order it online, requiring I mail it back. But I did have to make a couple of extra trips to Home Depot before I finally figured it out. After close scrutiny of the video. I was able to catch a glimpse of the 3/4" marking on one of the couplers. THERE: 3/4"!! In my humble opinion, I think you should make a correction to this. if not, you will have a lot of people being confused and frustrated. Thanks!

I love the projects and appreciate the videos. But, I am just now seeing this comment after tapping, assembling, and firing the torch with 1" pipe and adapters. $30 down the inventor drain.

Ive got a problem whenever I use the burner the flame is like a big lighter but when I put a hair dryer to it it ends up like yours but doesn't last long and gets blown out however I put it even though I followed your instructions to the T any ideas what might be the problem and how I can fix it?

Nate Clishe it could be a few thing. Try using different settings for the regulator. Make sure you have a oxygen control thing on it. There could be a few other problems but I can't think of them right now so try these and if it still doesn't work I'll help more.

So, I made this torch, and have used it quite a bit. I originally made the bucket smelter, but decided to go a different route with this device. I used an old propane tank (yes, took off the valve, let it air out for a week or so, cleaned it out well before cutting it) and it works like a charm! The only thing I noted is, I have to have the end cap on, even in the smelter, to get it to light. You might have said that, but I didn't catch it. Great project, thanks!

Could you do a video discussing a building a propane foundry vs one that runs using natural gas (what you normally encounter piped from the city to your home HVAC system)? Possibly talk about the gas pressure, burning temperature, time to melt an ingot, cost of natural gas vs propane, etc? And yes... I want fries with that! : ) Thanks

I have FINALLY made my gas blaster!!! Some of the parts were not available in my area so I had to improvise, and my Frankenstein blowtorch is not pretty, but by gar, it WORKS!!! Thank you Grant, I'm going to be having some fun now!!!

+TheRubberMeep After searching around where I live, the total price comes ot to around $150. But that's mostly because I don't have a drill press, taps, or bits that are needed for this video. Other than that, the regulator I'm looking at getting is $40 by itself. Do some hunting and you'll find what you need pretty easy. I found all of it on Amazon and searched local hardware stores for comparable pricing.

This project was a treasure hunt because I tried to buy locally, I recommend everyone to follow you're amazon links to buy the parts, also don't cheap out on the pressure regulator and gauge, I know the Marshal Excelsior is expensive but it is worth it! I just finished the build, it far surpassed my expectations! Thanks Grant for the instructions! Can't wait to see more forge/foundry videos!

IMPORTANT NOTE!!! When you tap the 1 1/2" reducer coupling I recommend using a 11/64 bit for your M5 tap, it is much closer to the M5-.08 tap and you won't end up with shallow threading...

Hey Grant, Love the videos! You did state that the foundry could melt Gold and other metals. I have viewed a few different videos of people scrapping gold and other metals from junk electronics. I think it would be awesome if you could create a video on how to do this. You have a great way of explaining the processes that could most likely help people avoid missteps from when they may view others videos. Just a thought. Keep up the amazing work and thanks for the videos!

Easy, cutting threads is a slow process in which the edges cut away quite a lot of steel which is way you should do it by hand, slow and steady.

I finish my propane torch, and can't produce jet flame, Why?? And which container can we use in propane foundry, Steel? or others?????????? (we are 14 years old, and we need some help)

I'm 15, and originally had the same problem that you are having. But now I can easily melt aluminum, and occasionally melt copper and bronze. You probably have the wrong propane regulator, or hooked it up directly to a near-empty propane tank. A barbecue regulator cannot nearly put enough propane fuel for a steady jet. And hooking up the torch directly (without a regulator) to a propane tank is extremely dangerous, and can blow up the fittings or hose. I got this 0-60 psi regulator for $30 from BestMaterials www.bestmaterials.com/detail.aspx?ID=15577 You don't even need a 0-60 psi regulator, you can get a 0-30 psi regulator from Amazon, it may be about the same price, but has cheaper shipping and will be easier to order (you have to choose your packaging from BestMaterials, and if you choose the wrong one, they will not ship it) Here is the 0-30 psi link www.amazon.com/Bayou-Classic-Adjustible-Regulator-Assembely/dp/B007PS0938

A steel crucible will be fine, but breaks easily especially with copper. I ended up buying a #3 clay-graphite crucible from Amazon. A #2 might heat up faster for 1 propane torch, but anything from 2-4 kilos works great for this furnace. I love the Backyard Foundry mini series the most! I've actually made the mini foundry, and it took me some trial and error to get it working right, but propane is definitely the way to go on this. Charcoal produces too much ash, which in the mini foundry, can choke your air flow and cause the crucible to cool too quickly. Also a note on crucibles: get a professional graphite crucible. It wont warp, it doesn't flake and rust like steel does, and it essentially acts as a non-stick pan when it comes to metals. Do you plan to make a larger foundry and a burner for waste oil/diesel anytime? I've seen a couple youtubers do this, but I think it'd be a great addition to this series.

I'm in the process of building a torch using this video as a template. I have found that the "1" steel pipe" is actually a 3/4" X 6" nipple. I also stayed away from any galvanized materials as they produce toxic fumes when hot. 1 alteration I made was instead of a rounded out tuna lid, I cut an actual steel plate to shape and used a washer and spring for tension (mostly for the sake of not having a tuna can lid on my parts list.)

Hey I just made a burner and it works ok but it was a little more complex to build than i thought by watching this video 20 times. I was just thinking it would be cool of you to maby show some tuning the air/gas mix and maby som misshaps that can occur, all in all i love your videos and now have my very own propane foundry.
