The main difference between BABYMETAL and a pop group with heavy background instrumentals is that in BABYMETAL they are fully integrated parts. The band is told explicitly to play full out (something they are never told to do for other performers) and not worry about overwhelming Su-'s vocals. She was selected precisely because the ability of her vocals to pierce through the mayhem.

Koba-chan built the band around Su. She was always the strongest singer even at a young age. Producers would have her lay down the master vocal tracks for the other singers to follow.
@NewAeonWarlord

hmmm this confuses me a bit for 2 reasons: 1: Didn't they wait quite some time before including an actual live-band until they knew the concept of idol+metal would be profitable? 2: What does "to play full out" even mean in this context? As a musician on stage your influence on the sound-mix that the audience hear is extremely limited at best. The person who has to take care that noone is being sonically overwhelmed is the mixing engineer.

@@NewAeonWarlord We have interviews from the producer and the band members that express both these points. On 1: we don't know the reason for the delay on bringing a live band, but one can assume it was a financial decision. The idol group they were a subunit of also played to canned music. To move beyond that, which was probably always the producers hope, required the experiment to be profitable. On 2: The musicians have stated that in all their other gigs (they are session musicians), they are told to back off, to limit their flourishes, etc. to not overpower the singers. The producer of BABYMETAL explicitly told them to play with full enthusiasm, something they'd never been told before and that Su- would shine through. Note: Kobametal scouted Su- when she was in another group precisely because of her unique vocal talents.

@@Singulitarian yea, backing track music is the standard for idol groups and I'm pretty sure the reasoning was financial as well as practicalities of live shows. Imagine them performing with other idol groups and having to clutter the stage with instruments first and then put everything away before the next act. just doesn't work well. Also I think another reason for adding the live band is that it makes for better acceptance in the metal community. I can kind of see what you mean for point 2. I know the Kami Band are session musicians and of course if you are hired as a regular session musician, you are there to support the artist who hired you, not to shine on your own. It's cool that they integrate them in a way that lets them shine and actually put a much greater portion of their actual skill to use!

@@NewAeonWarlord BM fans tend to sell big words and a "fake" image,to make BM look unique or special. In realitty there are 100's of Japanese metal idol groups who have suport bands, suport bands who actually are involved in wtiting songs for the group, recording the studio versions and doing 10 mins long live solos ot playing their own songs, and not just "be on stage when koba pays for". BTW, many BABYMETAL comments will sound like criticism or seem like they have an angry tone, but most likely they were not meant to sound like that at all. This happens because many if not most BABYMETAL commentors don't speak English as their primary language, plus it's hard to get a sense of the tone of someone's text anyways. BABYMETAL fans want you to love them as much as we do, so we will comment a lot of info not to correct you in a negative way, but to educate you in a positive way. I'm American, and even my English is bad, so I hope this all made sense! LOL

You're allowed to criticize things. I don't know why people get so bent out of shape over it. Most of us prefer honest reactions. To be fair, Su is so amazing, you can't be faulted for suspecting processing or effects. The musicians are called the "Kami Band". "Kami" means god in Japanese, and these guys are like gods of music. They are all men and are Japan's best musicians. They are wearing burial gowns and corpse face paint because in the BABYMETAL legend/fantasy/storyline, the "Fox God" raises the musicians from the dead and calls upon them to play the music for the girls for each concert. The 3 girls have been chosen by the "Fox God" to unite the world through metal. In this video, Su is just 16 years old performing at the famous Budokan arena in Japan. I believe BABYMETAL are still the youngest band/artists to perform there. The Beatles have performed there too. She has such a commanding presence that you forget that she is a tiny girl on that stage, at just 5ft -1inch (155cm) tall. She may look like a tiny mortal, but she is a metal goddess. I read a recent comment that described the lyrics best: She is singing about "a nightmare running away from a monster she can not see...she is exhausted and hides in a well. And she gives up and just asked the monster to show itself to know what she was running from before she dies.". This is one of their darker songs. Of the 50+ BABYMETAL songs, Su's solo songs have more depth lyrically. BABYMETAL concerts like these, especially the ones in Japan, are about 1.5+ hours long, and because the girls go hard on every song, the other two girls, Moa and Yui, use Su's solo as a chance to take a break. Great reaction! 🦊🤘

@@MattFarkas - no you were right, they are a pop-metal fusion. they do things that metal bands couldn't get away with. they play with a back track, they've lip synched songs. they have become more metal and less pop over time. most of the vocals in concerts are now live I think the studio magic question was kind of rude though because literally everybody does that. When was the last time a studio recording was real? 1950? But it's kind of unfair to expect her to sing 100% live with all the dancing that she does in most of the songs. The only songs where she really has full breath is her solo songs like Rondo of Nightmare and Akatsuki. She does most of the concert at half breath and mostly live. That is incredibly hard.

⚡ / 🔥 😱 🔥 Just to clarify, those were two different songs. The Kami Band instrumental is 'Mischief of the Metal Gods'. It was followed by Su's solo 'Rondo of Nightmare'. Those two songs are often, but not always performed together. They certainly compliment each other beautifully. That was the sixteen year old Su. : ) She performed three solos that night. 'No Rain, No Rainbow' was followed by 'Akatsuki' earlier in the set. Yui and Moa (as Black BABYMETAL) did two songs without Su that night ('4 no Uta' and 'Onedari Daisakusen'), and they all performed a bunch of songs together. That Black Night Budokan concert from March 2014 is still one of my favorite BABYMETAL shows. Leda Cygnus did the first guitar solo. He has ESP signature models, but has been favoring his signature Strandbergs for quite a while. Takayoshi Ohmura with the second guitar solo is rocking one of his signature ESP Snapper 7 models. He often plays the twinkle pink version called "Pink-chan". That's probably his best known guitar. Bassist BOH was playing his six-stringed Atelier Z BOH custom. Hideki Aoyama was on drums. After BOH, he has the most appearances with BABYMETAL. I love how Su's voice penetrates right through all the heavy instruments. Did I mention she was sixteen? : )

I don't think the majority of the comments saw your initial statements as criticism but we just wanted you to hold that thought for a minute until you'd actually heard them (her) sing live ;). I had understood you fine and if we're being honest before I'd seen/heard live performances from them I also had a lot of preconceptions that were leading me to believe that they were just that - a fun gimmick experience with full-on backing tracks. Now it has to be pointed out that they do use all sorts of backing tracks during their concerts because they have a lot of synth sounds or violins or piano sounds or even some screaming vocals that aren't performed by anyone on stage - except on special big occasions like during Su's birthday concert Legend S where they had actual violin players and a piano player for songs like No Rain No Rainbow. A lot of people are actually wondering if they'll ever bring in a keyboardist as a touring musician some day to add to their live value but who knows. Would be cool though :). For example, during that song, the segment where she looks down and appears to be singing is just lipsync. They're a bit of perfectionists at times so certain sounds they want to keep during live performances but are unable to be performed correctly in a live setting. But most of Su's singing parts are live nevertheless and she's proven time and time again what a talented singer she is. As you've said, that's perfectly a normal thing to do. Nightwish does that a lot aswell for example. Also, I was waiting for your question about the "two other girls". Well. They spend a lot of energy during their 1 hour and even sometimes 2 hours show and they dance and sing a lot and just like us, they're human beings and have limits. There are a few "Su solo" songs that Su sings alone while the two other "twin like" girls take a rest and prepare their own "duet songs". You'll eventually watch one of these 4 songs where Yui & Moa perform a song without the leadsinger Su. Those are surprisingly heavy too and offer an even starker contrast between "Cutesey" and "Heavy Metal". Though that's definetly intentional hah. BABYMETAL is a fun band, it doesn't have to be always taken seriously, it's a light and positive take on metal, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be taken seriously either. They can be VERY metal when they want to be - that much you'll also learn later on. But they are a legit, professional performing metal band that have just decided to give a new kind of energy to metal music. Their touring musicians are very much appreciated and most BM fans adore them just like they adore the girls. They thrive off of eachother and every one of these performing artists have a role that they fit to perfection. The girls role is mostly crowd entertainment and crowd interaction. The Kami band's role is to shred. ;) Great reaction. I'll also point out again that if you're a fan of Dreamtheater, you should check out their prog-metal nod to them "Tales of the Destinies". I believe Mike Portnoy's son is a huge BABYMETAL fan and had recommended his father to listen to it in a tweet, to which Mike answered that he was impressed and loved it. They've only performed that song live once during their biggest ever concert yet - Tokyo Dome 2016 - showcasing how hard a song it is to actually play live. I'm not sure if you'll be able to watch it on KZfaq though but I guess listening to it's audio is good enough for a start. But if you do get the chance, I'd definetly recommend to find a way to watch and react to the live version of it because as we've already told you, BABYMETAL is better live ;). Here's Mike Portnoy's tweet about BABYMETAL's Prog-metal song : twitter.com/mikeportnoy/status/814239777998458880?lang=en

Great reaction & thanks from Japan 有難う💛。 Budokan (武道館) is a legendary arena built mainly for Judo but used for other events including concerts. Dream Theater played there. I could manage to get tickets for BABYMETAL concerts at the Budokan this month and in February. If the 1st concert on Jan.19 is held as scheduled, I am ready to willingly accept jealousy from the world. Keeping my fingers crossed for COVID19 situation under control. In this video, Kamis' (=Gods') super plays are excellent enough as a main event in the show, but once the 16-year-old Queen emerges from the underground, she colors everything differently and turns Kamis' plays into a ritual to summon her.

@@skinnybuddha74 Honestly I could not confirm whether that theory is true or not. As far as I checked, as may as 35 events (mostly concerts) were scheduled in January & February (Some were cancelled due to COVID issue). But Budokan was originally constructed for Judo and other Japanese traditional martial arts (Budokan means literally "house of martial arts"), so it is obvious that there are strict guidelines when other types of events are held. Budokan became famous worldwide when the Beatles held concerts in 1966 and released their album entitled "five nights in a judo arena - The Beatles on stage in Japan" and thereafter big international artists have wanted to perform there (The Walker Bros, The Monkees, Chicago, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Carpenters, Eric Clapton, Queen, Bob Dylan ... etc.) Of course, this venue became a place at which many Japanese artists have longed for playing, so it must be very difficult to rent the venue. In addition, events for original purpose (traditional martial arts) are prioritized over music events. Under the circumstances, only big name, like BABYMETAL can hold 10 concerts at Budokan which has normally approx. 15,000 seating capacity.

Nice reaction. You asked about whether the players are always the same: no, but the rotation is small and there are definitely primary individuals that are the default choice if they are available. Also as of the last album tour they've recruited an entirely separate "Kamiband of the West" that is a few members of Galactic Empire plus Anthony Barone on drums. The players in this performance, in solo order: Guitar: Leda Cygnus Guitar: Takayoshi Ohmura Bass: BOH Drums: Hideki Aoyama I think Ohmura, BOH, and Aoyama can be considered the "default" configuration, with Leda Cygnus or Isao filling in the second guitar. Occasionally there is a backup for bass or drums, but it's uncommon. In the past, Mikio Fujioka was frequently on guitar, but he sadly passed away in early 2018 due to an accident (RIP). You will eventually see him in performances. You'll be able to recognize him by his broad smile (which can look a bit creepy in the makeup). Extremely talented and wonderful person by all accounts. Huge loss to the world. Mentioning Dream Theatre in a Babymetal reaction is a recipe for a barrage of recommendations for Tales of the Destinies, but also Babymetal's songwriters seem to prefer a lot of changeups and contrasting elements in general, so fans of prog metal have a lot to look forward to in their catalogue beyond that one song, I think.

I don't know if someone got angry on the comment, because sometimes someone gets angry, but I think most of us told you to wait and see more, that she has been a professional in a booming band for so many years and it can't be a trick. Also you had not a bad intuition on the pop tricks, Babymetal is a band under the scope of a J-Pop brand used to work in the pop and idol industry, and they don't use them tricks too much in Babymetal because the manager, creator, producer, songwriter and owner of the band (Key Kobayashi) is one of us metalheads and always tries to stop that, but sometimes the label does their things, and we get angry. But on the people involved in the band, as you can see, musicians, dancers, singer, songwriting team...everyone is so talented. Singer, because Suzuka (Su-metal) is the only singer. The other two girls dance and do the choruses, though when they were still young like in that concert they had some solo songs so they could rest and do all the show. And last, you can't put Babymetal in one style of metal, they touch all the ranges. If you said you like Dream Theather, they have one song very inspired by them, Tales of the Destinies. You can try that one, though you will only find audio in KZfaq, no live performance.

Kobametal, BABYMETAL's producer, is a big Dream Theater fan, so BABYMETAL has a Dream Theater influenced song called "Tales of the Destinies". Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater said he was "BLOWN away" when he heard the song. His son, Max, is a big BABYMETAL fan and you can find pics of him wearing BABYMETAL shirts. BABYMETAL actually performed the song live only once due to being very complex...but what is even crazier is that the girls have choreography to the song! If you do decide to react to "Tales of the Destinies", please react to the audio only version, since the youtube live performance has a lower audio quality (trust me, you want to hear every beautiful note) and will have a higher chance of getting blocked.🦊🤘

While I agree that the studio version has better audio, I still think it's more impressive to see the live performance. It's really insane that they were able to pull that off. @@egodreas I think I responded to you in the other video about this. I would absolutely recommend that link IF the ending wasn't abruptly cut off. The ending is so nice I feel it cannot be missed! And while I really love the choreography, this particular track I think it's more worth it for him to be able to listen to the music in its best quality to fully appreciate it and perhaps go back later to check out the live footage. To me the music in this one MUST be front and center. I wouldn't say that about any other one but this one! Anyway, just giving him the option here. Search KZfaq for: JQdbdD1X9NU

I don't think the beat of the song has anything to do with their dance choreography. They dance to their own beat and then there are certain times where they match the song here and there to make it look like they are. I don't think Tales was any harder than any other song for them to dance to.

Babymetal origins came from Sakura Gakuin or Cherry Blossom School is where Babymetal started. They're a fusion of Jpop and metal. Babymetal don't do a specific genre of metal. They combined other metal genre and other cultural background into a song.

Great reaction, thanks! No offense taken, actually I believe they tend to process her vocals too much in the studio versions so my entire BABYMETAL playlist is made with the audio from live performances. And she sounds always amazing! The Kami Band, well they are the best among the best and there is no possible argument here hehe... The venue (the Nippon Budokan) is iconic with a crazy 360º spinning stage in the middle as you can see... but not even their biggest or craziest (and that is really mental). And... this is for you: "Ijime, Dame, Zettai" (Live at Sonisphere 2014): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iNVdksaTy8rWiXk.html

Dont worry about offending, babymetal uses studio magic all the time, but funny thing is their live shows are better and the vocal are actually better live, but even in live all you hear is not 100% live, maybe 90% or less is. Great reaction and if you like Dream Theater you should do Tales of the Destinies, you will have to do the audio only or get a link to a dvd upload and do link and sync but Babymetal fans (THE ONE) are ok with that.

This was during the "Golden Era" of Babymetal. Now it is more pop show. for the last couple of years they have been putting the Kami band in the back. No more solos or intros. Then stopped performing any of their power metal ballads such as this song. Then they added masks so they can change out for lesser known artist. Like they did when they did the West band. Who aside from Anthony Barone's machine gun drumming (The guy changes bands more than underwear) they rest of band stood there like stiff statues (The Starwars kids). Just the other day at Budokan they started their 2021 tour (the 19th, which is also Mikio Fujioka's bday as I seen other had mentioned him.) The Kami band was the same line up as in this video (Takayoshi was using Mikio's guitar). From all of the fan vids being posted. You could hardly see the band(they wear black now). One guy who posted a few songs with the camera angle showing jumbotron above the round stage that the girls were on. Not one direct shot of any Kami band member. For some reason the management forgot what got them to wear they are and what made them legit in the Metal community.. A Real Band!... It is definitely more pop these days.

I feel the same way though when I see normal videos where they had all day in a studio. Until I hear it live I always have doubts. Some people get a bit jumpy to protect them. Liked your reaction here. How much Queen have you listened to? Would be curious on your thoughts of Brian and his guitar playing. I am a giant fan of them. Deacon is like my favorite bass player. For a guy who did not do any crazy slap solo stuff he sure wrote a lot of amazing bass lines. For people who have played bass watching him tap that out like that makes you kinda want to just give up and play piano. BOH is amazing

Built for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics as the marshal arts venue, the Nippon Budokan. holds 15,000 (Baby metal have played the Tokyo Dome - 55,000 capacity, and Glastonbury [potentially greater number]). Yesterday BM held the first of 10 concerts at the Budokan, marking their 10 years of existence - over the concerts (C-19 permitting) they should cover their back catalogue and complete the series of concepts linked to their Metal Galaxy album, with hopefully new songs from this Summer. It is still precarious for the concert with Coronavirus spikes, and Band Maid having deferred their Hidden World concert at the Budokan, but audiences are limited to 5,000 with wearing of the rather cool double saviour mask mandatory. By the way - the bassist BOH has a notable jazz fusion background, as did their late guitarist Mikio Fujioka (not playing in this video)

Feel free to react to them as separate videos if you wish. Tales of the Destinies is the only time where I suggest you use just the studio audio track.
