Usually those military vehicles had really low axle gear ratios, IE 5:38, yet it didn't seem like it. At one point it appeared it was in 2x4 high range and other times 4x4 high range. Sad about the wonderful 5.3L Gladiator, love the style of those old trucks. Nice video Tyler and crew.
@Combatvet0311
@Combatvet0311 6 жыл бұрын
Garth Clark 5.17 ratio but xfercase is only 1.1 so it's still a bit high for crawling. I did the majority in 2wd only using 4wd when needed, that rock is sand paper and turning in 4wd with that much traction puts undue stress on 50 yo steering that isn't your typical drag link/tie rod setup.
@Combatvet0311
@Combatvet0311 6 жыл бұрын
Garth Clark also worth noting the M151 model does not have a low and high range, only high.
@Garth2011

Sad. Glad I wasn't assigned one of those ! If I'm accurate, I believe Ford made those independent suspension Jeeps. They would roll rather easy as a result.
@Combatvet0311
@Combatvet0311 6 жыл бұрын
Garth Clark Ford design, Kaiser/AMG all had build contracts over time. They do indeed have that risk, these were never sold for civillian use after service. I've got 20 years now on these and with respect for what they are you can still safely play with them.

Owned a 1951 M-38 that was modified including the Buick V-6, T-10 4 Speed, Warn Stick Shift Overdrive, stock transfer case with stock 5:38 4x4 gears. Changed the steering box to Chevy and reversed the front spring mounts. Customized the dash with SW gauges and added a foot operated parking brake using the drum brake on the driveshaft/transfer case. Could climb much with that thing. Put Lincoln drum brakes on all 4, hard to steer straight when stopping and at highway speeds, especially around semi-trucks etc. Got used to it after all the years I owned it but not for someone to borrow, too risky to drive. Dick Cepek and SmittyBilt, Sand Tires Unlimited among others were just getting into off-roading business at this time period so we had to make much of our "mods" just like BJ does. There were no off-road catalogs or suppliers like today. At about the same time period, we went on the Rubicon Trail, late '60s, when they allowed dune buggies. They didn't have the gears and got into lots of trouble. Today, no dune buggies allowed. That was a good run, they hauled the chuck wagon and entertainment while everyone traversed the Rubicon Trail learning and finding out about their driving skills and rig abilities. No large frame vehicles could get through without a lot of damage but back then, no 36" tires and lift kits, Dynatrac, beefy driveshafts/yokes/steering were being used. I wouldn't do it with a customized large rig today even so, too much repair work afterwards.

Nice group of jeeps. The XJs were looking exceptionally good as always. That pickup was cool. I would have liked to seen it show off it's stuff. I really liked the old ARMY jeep. Shows the pedigree and awesome to see it on the trails. Perhaps this will be the year my XJ goes 4x4 and gets to run with the big dogs. At least I can watch all of the really cool vids and 4x4 vicariously till then. I almost feel like I need a shower to get the dust off after watching that one. The only thing you were missing was a nice end of ride bonfire. 10/10

Hey Matt, your truck already has 4 air tanks. All you have to do is put an additional valve stem in one of your wheels. If you put a second additional valve stem in a wheel on the same axle then you can link them with about 5 ft of hose and double your capacity.
