Finally!! Metal must be one of the music genres with most vocal variety displayed. This kind of analysis showcase the vast range of experimentation human voices can do within this genre... It never cease to amaze me. Well done sir! For the sake of you keeping the regularity of this channel it would be cool if you could expand in different chapters the info from each of the example... Keep it up with the great work bro! Cheers from Peru!

Devin Townsend sticks out as a very special vocalist for me in this context, as I'd argue he has goddamn perfect examples that fills the three main categories and everything in between. He does operatic vocals, typical cleans, semi-spoken vocals, fried operatics, VERY distinctly pitched screams, and post production additions including some distortion, gang vocals, and background operas. Honestly, if you want a showcase of maybe 80% of vocals in metal (missing true death growls and black metal shrieks), Townsend's got a piece which uses it with either Strapping Young Lad or his solo stuff.

I just had to comment as soon as I saw that you put in Metallica's Trapped Under Ice which is such a hidden gem, for some reason abandoned by the band (probably because of how hard it is to sing for James) but it's the song that got me listening to the band, so I have a sweet spot for it in my heart.

Whenever anyone talks about metal vocals and Kyo from Dir En Grey/Sukekiyo/Petit Brabacon isn't mentioned, I kinda feel short changed. That guy is a one man showcase of vocals styles, he has insane range and can do almost everything and occasionally uses it all across a single track, from operatic cleans to screams and everything inbetween.

I can appreciate that you never mentioned the heavy emphasis on pitchshifted gutterals in Deathgrind/Goregrind of the late 90's/2000s. I still really enjoy it though. The animal vocals are the closest we have gotten to pitchshifted vocals since their inception.

When it comes to pitched harsh/extrem vocals Travis Ryan from Cattle Decapitation does that weird "goblin" singing thing, it's definitely a harsh vocal style but has a very clear pitch, it's almost like a falsetto melodic false chord or something equally weird (I have no idea how he actually does it tbh)

It's fry and it's made with the mixed voice, right on your bridge, and adding “masked singing”, but made a little more nasal. Another approach would be if you tried to make Stitch's voice, or Yoshi's voice and adding your vocal fry distortion on top of it.

Honorable mentions: Hell is Empty and All the Devils Are Here by Anaal Nathrakh is an encyclopedia of metal vocals, from the lowest resonant sink gargles to static electric screams which the used microphone cannot handle. Liturgy - the way she scream/shouts on live recordings is beyond every conventional technique Fleurety - on their 93-94 demos, the singer used technique that is actually painful and shocking to listen, and eventually destroyed his vocal chords Ved Buens Ende on Written in Waters - Both vocalists did something unique here. Vicotnik used super compressed technique with unusual texture, Czral developed this half off-the-key singing, half declamation Ihsahn from Emperor - inhaled screaming pretty much everywhere (I might be wrong here, but there is something distinct about the way he sings)

One of my favorite examples of layering has to be what In Flames has been doing from Reroute to Remain on, where Anders will layer his high fry with his singing (sitting somewhere in the realm of the cleaner side of John Davis). With it being layering his voice with his voice (and likely some sort of clever mixing/production), the vocal tracks mesh together to give the effect of a mixed vocal, just with more going on (since you get all of the character of a clean vocal and all of the character of a scream simultaneously). I know a lot of In Flames fans don’t care for anything RtR on, but throw Trigger on and give the chorus a listen paying attention to the vocals specifically. Even for people who aren’t fans of the style of their middle-later records, there’s some really cool technique in there.

Well for the image stuff on clicking the video , Rob Halford is certainly not clean vocals, even retaining the melody. Rapid fire, Sinner, Cheater, Freewheel Burning and thousands of others aren't clean. There's some gritt to it, herited from Black soul dudes and blues. Also in between they were doing what would be extreme metal vocals in bits and pieces, again in lineage from Howlin wolf to Wilson Pickett. That Venom would establish as a style.

Tangent but I always been a big fan of the Metallic Hardcore vocals of stuff like Norma Jean and also the Myspace Deathcore era vocals (those pig squeals and inhales) but as I got older I started to appreciate non-metal/hardcore vocals. I weirdly still HATE cleans in metal. But what I mean is I started to enjoy and/or love pop or general rock songs where the vocalist had a sound like they chain smoked since a child and/or just have a natural hoarse voice. Like they were obviously not trying to be heavy or brutal in the metal sense but their timbre brought an edge or harshness to something that sounded happy-ish melody wise. I mean, I used to clown on this stuff but heck now I even love voices like Miley Cyrus. It's a nice contrast to the music usually. Oh, another cool as thing are vocals from traditional Mongolian music. I had a Mongolian co-worker who introduced me to some music and damn, they're like natural metalheads.

I really like all types of vocals in metal music but I've always had a soft spot for harsh vocals/screaming that sounds more natural and less technique based. For example, All Shall Perish, i love their vocals. Especially on Wage Slaves. Or Vildhjarta, so heavy and dark sounding. But, there's just a different feeling i get in my soul when i hear more natural sounding screaming with stuff like Norma Jeans 1st couple albums, The Chariot, and older Deftones stuff. Great video, dude!

I think that a band that also belongs in the other types category would be beherit, especially on the drawing down the moon album. Have you heard of Kyo, the singer of Dir en Grey? He is probably the most talented metal singer I have ever heard. He can switch between the lowest of guttural growls, and the highest of banshee shrieks, to the cleanest of singing, to what would be probably be categorized as 'other,' and go back and forth between them. He also had a range of around 5 octaves. There is truly no one like him. If you want to check him out, I would first look at "Vinushka" then "Hageshisa to, Kono Mune no Naka de Karamitsuita Shakunetsu no Yami" both live from ADROGYNOUS : a view of the Acro, which I'll link below. as a fun fact, inhales are overtime pretty detrimental to you since they’re kinda using your folds unnaturally. It’s a lot harder to sustain inhales since, like I said, they’re unnatural. Very easy to mess em up and very difficult to learn as well. I’m not sure on the biology of it but online there isn’t a lot of good rep on them and I think that says enough.

I'd also add arytenoid/overtone screaming, typical of most modern deathcore and deathgrind... Think of Travis Ryan, Phil Bozeman and Ben Duerr's lows, and Travis Ryan's pitched “witchy clean highs” as a type of pitched screaming, he uses them mostly in the choruses (Your Disposal, Death Atlas, The Prophets Of Loss, Scourge Of The Offspring), which idk if it fits within the “mixed singing” category or in “completely unhinged” (e.g. Pacific Grim, on the chorus, when we sings “we never stood a chance against this sick romance”, or Time's Cruel Curtain, or A Living, Breathing Piece Of Defecating Meat)... He also does some sort of pitched lows which sound like shouts but are not... Yeah, you may notice that I love Travis Ryan lol...
