The song is about falling in love with a married man, there is an acoustic version of this song in which Saiki's vocals conveys the emotions of being in this situation more powerfully.

Hello from a rather damp Staffordshire! Welcome to Band-Maid! The best hard rock band I have heard in my 57 years on this planet. They don't stick to any one genre and often mix genres in songs. They are extremely diverse and have an extensive 10 year back catalogue featuring Punk, Pop-Punk, Hard-Rock, Classic Rock, Metal, Prog, Blues, Jazz, Groove, Rap etc. From face melting 220 bpm punk-prog to ballads, instrumentals to acoustics they do it all. They are also five of the nicest people in music, without a shred of ego. They are funny and fun and bad-ass musicians to boot. They are currently celebrating their 10th anniversary with the original line up. The lyrics to "Puzzle" are about falling in love with a married man and all the lies and deceit that entails. Btw, Miku the rhythm guitarist (red rose) formed the band. She had the idea of Band-Maid after working as a maid in maid cafe's. It's a concept called "The Gap" - that is what you see is NOT what you get. They take the maid café concept literally. They call their concerts "servings" and their fans "Masters and Princesses". Oh, and Miku is an 810 year old small pigeon. Welcome to the pigeon hole Po!

Well done, Sir Roger! 🍻 Welcome to the world of Band Maid, my friend. If you’re looking for angry metal with violence, screaming and skulls? There are plenty of choices out there. Band Maid is the happiest rock band in the world and the most interesting thing to happen in the hard rock space in generations. The Maids are a musician’s band, in the same sense as Tool and Rush before them. “Puzzle” is certainly one example of their brand of progressive, powerful rock with pop sensibilities. The amount of lead guitar work by Kanami here is worth a few more listens. Here are some of their compositions that may give you a better understanding of how versatile and clever they are as writers and musicians: “Onset,” official live “From Now On,” OMV (Both are instrumentals) “DICE,” OMV “Play,” official live “Blooming,” OMV The Maids play their own version of what they call “cool music.” They can’t be pigeonholed 😏 (you’ll see) Pro-tip: Don’t sweat the lyrics. Treat Saiki’s voice as another instrument and enjoy the melodies and transitions P.S. You mentioned Kiss. My first concert experience was Kiss in 1978. My most recent? Band Maid in 2023. Both bands absolutely outperform their studio tracks on a regular basis. The world needs a double live Band Maid release!

Saiki (Sy-kee) lead singer does have her machine-gun vocals at time and can leave you breathless just watching. I often tease she has three lungs. Kanami (Kah0mah-mee) lead guitar will never do an over-the-top solo, always gives you just enough to want more. Kaname (Ka-na-mee) drums is a machine and this song doesn't show her true skills, but it does show how she can lay back to just make the song great and not outshine any other member. MISA (Mee-sah) bass is holding back here too and there are other songs where she shines, but never outperforms. Band-Maid always delivers and you can literally pick any song to listen to and be happy. They are truly a One for All and All for One band...bo egos here.

If you like Band Maid's music, you should pull a two-song clip on KZfaq that was recorded live from their one-hour performance at the Lollapalooza music festival in Chicago in August of 2023. The two-song clip is "Dice/Hate?". The clip has absolutely gone VIRAL on KZfaq and the rest of the internet. During the "Dice" performance theri are great solos by Misa, the bassist, and Kanami, the lead guitarist. During the interlude between the two songs Akane, their drummer, kept pounding her drum kit transitioning seamlessly into "Hate?". During "Hate?" there is an EPIC "call and respond" "conversation/duel" between Misa and Kanami. The bandmembers loved it, the audience loved it and went wild, and now the internet loves it. The clip shows how far Band Maid has come in 10 years from the song "Thrill" that got very popular on J-Rock radio and internet and saved their careers as a group.

"That was fun!" Aww! Kobato is happy! Are you enjoy? A quick comment about the costumes; maid cafes in Japan are just a theme restaurant. They serve a lot of tourists but also anyone who wants to have an entertaining evening out. Cosplay on your part is not required. Part of the "schtick" is waitresses that dress up as maids and treat you like you're the master of the castle, doting on you and entertaining you, including singing songs. The part of the title that you didn't want to pronounce is "oky-u-ji" which translates as "serving," ie. they are serving music to the audience, who have all "come home." But - they are interested in provoking what they refer to as "the gap" between your expectation of a cutsey maid singing a cutesy song, and what you get as a rock and roll band playing serious music, loud and "in your face." It kinda works, in my opinion. That's why, after punching you in the face, Miku will bounce up the the microphone and ask with a cutesy voice, "Are you enjoy?" Pretty much everyone in the audiences answers with an enthusiatic "YES!!!" 20% of Band-Maid have worked in a maid cafe while trying to feed themselves and raise enough money to pursue a career in music. The other four didn't, and sort of go along with it in a bemused way (although by now they are all completely Band-Maid). The former maid is second singer and rhythm guitar player. Kobato Miku (小鳩 ミク) is a stage name. Kobato (小鳩) breaks down into characters that mean "small pigeon" (小 small, 鳩 pigeon) and she leans into it. She started the band and established the identity. She writes most of the lyrics and is surprisingly deep and poetic for a chirpy little anime cosplay maid. A lot of cultural references and metaphor gets lost in the translations, but even so her lyrics are very impressive. And, like @kicorse says, sometimes writers use foreign languages because they add that certain "je ne sais quoi." For the meaning of "Puzzle," pay attention to the very first phrase. _He's_ the missing piece of the puzzle in her life, but she's left with useless lighters, empty glasses, and new clothes she'll never wear. As a band, their style ranges. As some others have said, this rock and roll version of the song expresses anger and scorn with sarcasm, but there is an acoustic version that uses the exact same lyrics, melody and chords to express sorrow and loss. They are a very very good band. Sometimes the arguments are entertaining; are they a metal band or not? They call themselves "impossibly hard rocking" but they are hard to pin down. Their style ranges from pop punk, to hard or prog or alt rock, to grunge, sometimes within a song - a bluesy guitar, metal drums, grungy bass, pop vocals - but what's fascinating is how it all melds into a coherent whole without seeming forced in any way. You'll also hear comments about how this or that is reminiscent of something (but when you put it back-to-back for comparison, well, maybe not). You can almost identify someone's age by what Band-Maid's songs remind them of. I agree totally about your "shredding" comments. For me, the whole point of music is to express emotions that can't be expressed in words. There are many techniques and shredding is just one. Mindless shredding without a point is tiresome. Kanami Tōno always seems to have a point to her solos. I feel she is a very expressive player, one of the best I've heard in a long time. MISA on bass has the same characteristics, you'll hear references to her "lead bass" and yet it fits with the rest of the band. The same goes for Akane Hirose on drums; very expressive and innovative, yet integrated into the music so sometimes you don't even notice until you listen for it. I'd refer you to the music video for *"Manners"* (and the guitar solo section in particular) but really any of their songs will do it. Oh, and *"Shambles."* Do it. This has gotten much longer than I intended but one final comment about their back catalog. Their label supplied songs for them when they first started, so there's two or three EPs of songs that are a bit poppier. They aren't bad. They interpret music in a mature and musical way, but starting with the last song on their third EP they've written almost all their own music. Kanami Tōno writes the music for the most part, and Miku Kobato writes the lyrics, for the most part. They just finished their 10th year and played a major concert (or "serving") in Yokohama Arena. Their next to last song was "Forward" from their very first EP. They ain't ashamed of anything, you know?

So many extremely skilful musicians and bands - Band-Maid, Lovebites, Nemophila _these three are the main core IMHO and the next Aldious, Asterism, Hanabie, Fate Gear, Trident etc an many others. The most popular in the world is now _Baby Metal (female vocals) with top notch male musisians from Kami band and etc........very deep rabbit hole.

Yep. So many times Band-Maid remind me of this or that but I can never seem to remember exactly what. They pull from so many genres and styles that I’ve given up trying to pin them down. Their music is wonderfully nostalgic yet somehow fresh and innovative. I never imagined that in my mid sixties 5 little tiny Japanese girls would rekindle my love of the rock of my youth that I thought had pretty much faded into history. I’m so glad that I have been proven wrong. Sure, there have been occasional exceptions for a song or two from a band but the scope of these ladies catalog of great songs is truly astounding. Best of all they always make me smile.

This is the first part of an information file about the Ladies of Band-Maid. Band Maid Is; (In order of joining band) Name/Age: Nickname: Position: Miku Kobato Small Pigeon/ Band Founder, Secondary Lead Vocalist, Rhythm Guitarist, Main Lyricist, Age: 32 Koba/Kuruppo/ Backing Vocals, Backing Tracks, Arrangements 10/21/91 Cluppo Kanami Tono Princess/ Lead Guitarist, Primary Composer, Backing Vocals, Keyboards, Backing Tracks Age: 32 Kanamincho/ Backing Vocals on Backing Tracks, Arrangements 9/28/91 Mincho Akane Hirose Gorilla/ Drums, Percussion, Backing Vocals on Backing Tracks, Backing Tracks, Age: 32 Ah-Chan Arrangements 12/14/90 MISA Barefoot Assassin/ 5 String Bass Guitar, Backing Vocals on Backing Tracks, Backing Tracks Age: 31 MISA-MISA-MISA Arrangements 10/15/92 Saiki Atsumi Ice Queen/ Primary Lead Vocalist, Backing Vocals, Lyricist, Backing Vocals on Backing Age: 29 Sai-Chan/ Tracks, Backing tracks, Arrangements 2/8/94 Sensei (Teacher) There is more to the file if you are interested. And the "Maid" esthetic is based around what band founder Miku Kobato calls "The Gap", between what you see and what you hear. You see 5 young women dressed in maid outfits, which may make you think of subservience behavior, but what you HEAR? Is Hard Rock mixed with Pop, Punk, Jazz, R&B, Metal, and other genres. Making their own unique identifiable sound. And as others have mentioned, this song is an angry woman, involved with a cheating husband as the "other woman" and how she can't be with him, yet she can't leave him. There is an acoustic version from their 2018 Zepp Tokyo performance which tears your heart out with the emotional impact. In this version you hear a woman spitting her defiance at the situation, in the acoustic version, the word are exactly the same, yet the delivery of the lyrics are a lament. And Kanami the lead guitarist and primary composer is a virtuoso of both guitar and piano, saying that, she also knows just how to best serve the song with her solos. Too many other guitarist, solo to show off, not Kanami. She solos to enhance the song. And this version of Puzzle was taken from the Ladies January 2023 performance at the Tokyo Garden Theater. The previous version of this song was taken from their 2017 performance at Shinkiba Studio Coast. It was consider to be THE best version of Puzzle due to it's sound mixing. The Latest version comes close, but there is still just a touch of muddiness in the sound. And the new version has had very little post production, so the sound is almost exactly how the Ladies sound when you see them live. I've seen them live through streams 4 times, and live in person once, and how they sound here is how they sound in person. And I remember KISS Alive, it's been many year since I was a KISS Army member. I have a LOT of respect for Paul, Gene, Ace and Peter, but honestly, they needed to retire 10 years ago.

@@GaryHolloway-810 Why yes there is. Here is the rest of that particular file. Band Maid was started in 2013 by Miku Kobato. At the time she had just left the Idol Group, Lil Cumin and she didn't like the type of music she had been performing. She approached her management agency with the idea of making an actual band playing rock music but dressed as maids. She had worked in a Maid Cafe and thought the image of maids playing rockin music would create what she called "The Gap" between what you see and what you hear. The Management company was like Ok, go ahead. Miku then looked around and found Kanami a singer/songwriter who was posting her own videos on the internet. Miku had her agency contact her and Kanami thought the idea was cool and agreed to join. Miku then asked if Kanami knew a drummer who might be interested. Kanami had worked with Akane in the past and there is 2 versions of this, the first is, Kanami literally walked over to Akane's apartment and asked her, the second is Kanami called Akane and asked her. (Akane has said in 2 different interviews that 1: Kanami called her and asked if she could come over and 2: in a second interview Kanami just came over) Akane was actually hesitant as she had worked in an "All Girl Group" before and didn't enjoy it as it wasn't the type of music she wanted to play. After hearing a Demo, Akane was like ok, but was still slightly hesitant because of the "Maid Outfits", but she agreed to give it a try. Akane was asked if she knew a bass player and she had gone to Tokyo School of Music with MISA and had worked a couple of jobs with her. So Misa was contacted and after she heard a demo she was like I like the music, but she also was hesitant about the "Maid Outfits", but she relented and joined in as she really wanted to play the kind of music she heard in the demo. The 3 of them then "Auditioned" for the record company and passed the audition. Now we have the "Core" members. The 4 members worked out some songs provided for them by the record company, and a setlist and they had performed 3 times with just Miku on main vocals. Miku after those performances felt that her voice wasn't powerful enough to really perform the songs she wanted. So she approached her management company again and asked if they had any singers who weren't in other projects. They then auditioned several singers. Miku heard Saiki rehearsing in a room across the hall and asked if she could be auditioned, the record company then had Saiki audition. Saiki was signed to the same management company and had done some work as a backup singer and dancer and was asked if she would be interested in auditioning for this new group which currently had 4 members and she would be the fifth. She had been a member of a group with 8 other people as a backup singer and dancer, and HATED it. So she listened to the demo and thought "Cool" because she liked the music. Now we come to the tricky part. Miku KNEW that if Saiki was told about the "Maid Outfits" she would say NO WAY!, so they didn't tell her. They told her they would have "Cool/cute Clothes"(I've read it translated either way), and she never met Miku until a few days before they had a contracted performance. She wasn't told about the "Maid Outfits" until the day before the performance, and she had considered backing out, but she had signed the contract. (Saiki also had NEVER met Miku until then as well) So the Ladies, went and did the performance and Saiki really, REALLY liked the crowds reaction and the music they were performing. She DIDN'T like the apron she wore so it got ditched after the first performance. And you now have the beginnings of the BEST LIVE HARD ROCK BAND in the WORLD! ALL HAIL BAND MAID!!!!! Now that we have the Full band, it was felt that there needed to be a second guitar. Saiki was like, "Not Me, No Way." So Miku said, "I'll do it.", at first that was literally all she did, was hold the guitar and mime playing it, until Akane said, if you are going to hold it, you NEED to learn to play it. And Miku said, "Ok.", and Kanami started to teach Miku how to play. The Ladies released their first album in 2014 "Maid in Japan" which failed to chart, but later after "Thrill" it was reissued and charted to #26 in Japan. Then in 2015 they released "New Beginning" On New Beginning was the song that changed Band Maid's entire existence. "Thrill"... The band was getting ready to release their first music video and the choice was between "Love, Passion, Matador" and "Thrill" and the ladies chose Thrill. (Little known fact, Miku helped with the lyrics on Thrill but did not get credited) This became the seminal moment of Band Maid. Because their second album charted at #64, the record company was seriously considering disbanding the Ladies and switching them to other projects. (In fact they had Kanami and Akane work with Mochi to Cheese thinking that when Band Maid cratered they could use them in another band. MISA had also just started working with Mochi to Cheese as well). However about 6 months after the video's release, a Facebook page "JRock Radio" posted the video to their timeline. And the video went viral. Having over a million views in just a few short weeks. The Ladies Twitter page got so many hits they thought their page had been hacked. Their KZfaq channel also started getting more and more subscribers and views to Thrill. Now the ladies knew where their fans wanted them to go. Harder Rock, less pop. And history was Maid. And if anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask. I and many others would be more than happy to help answer any questions you may have.

Always a pleasure to see someone discovering Band-Maid, who many of us feel are the best hard rock band today, and possibly in many years. This may sound ridiculous, but if you hear enough of their music, you may just come to be one of us. A maidiac. The fan community you will find extremely welcoming and very supportive of all things "maid". But if you don't mind, I would like to make just a couple of suggestions. You seem like a person that appreciates lyrics, so this may be a tough ask, but I still highly recommend that you completely ignore lyrics the first time through. Many of their (especially recent) songs are extremely densely layered arrangements, that if you listen closely you can hear a zillion really cool things happening at once. It's borderline impossible to feel the emotion and intricacy of the music on the first listen if you're reading the lyrics. Instead, try to think of the vocalist (Saiki the Ice Queen) as another instrument. (Don't skip the lyrics though - definitely check them out after you done the initial listening as they're pretty darned good most of the time.) Their musicianship as a band is so far above the level of most bands that the instrumental parts absolutely demand your full awareness. The lead guitarist (Kanami) is the main composer and she's a flat out super genius when it comes to songwriting. While they have a recognizable sound, you'll also find that none of their songs sound the same, and they'll bounce back and forth effortlessly between genres on some of their songs. You really need at least 20 under your belt before you completely get the talent level, virtuosity and versatility of this band. They'll make you cry with a beautiful ballad, they'll leave you with your mouth hanging open with proggy brilliance, and they'll make you want to dance and move and smile at the same time. Their music is also very uplifting, and you will find yourself in a better mood after listening to most of their songs, almost like magic. Again - this sounds very "fanboy-esque" and while I'll admit to being hooked completely, it is not without reason. Even if you don't do reaction videos on all of them, you'll be doing yourself a favor to dive in more deeply.

Nice thoughtful reaction. On some of your comments: The interspersed English: This is common for Japanese bands, but Band-Maid do it more than most. Sometimes the choice of language seems random from the perspective of meaning and is more about which fits best phonetically. In this song though, I think it's very artful. "But that's fine with me" is emphasised by being in a foreign language, which is appropriate because the denialism in that phrase is a culmination of the first and second verses. "Not into cosplay": Me neither, nor the majority Band-Maid fans (some are, and that's great that they also get to enjoy that aspect). Personally, I wouldn't visit a maid-cafe if you paid me. But the music is incredible. The Iron Maiden comparison: To me that's a big compliment, because Iron Maiden are my favourite 20th Century band, and they are still making great music today (I saw them at the O2 this year). I don't think Band-Maid are directly influenced them, though there are other Japanese bands who definitely are. They have extremely diverse influences which shows in their music - Puzzle has more 20th Century rock/metal in it than most of their songs. Live versus studio: There are some exceptions, but generally I prefer Band-Maid live. The studio versions are great but sometimes the production/mastering/compression diminishes them for me, and I can hear the energy and the joy in their live performances.

Rule No.1 - Try not to overthink about their style of music. They don't stick to one style anyway. No.2 - Lyrics - forget it while you listen to the music for the first time. No.3 - They are dead serious about their music. Finally - it's okay to be honest. Thank you for giving them a chance.

Welcome to the world of the Maids. Yes..in many ways it’s a difficult concept to get your head around; that this incredible rock band of 5 Japanese women in maid outfits (sort of) might just be the best rock band on the planet 🌏 and the best to emerge in decades. Yet, if you stay with your journey down the “Pigeon” hole, you’ll quickly come to understand its true. And that no comparisons, no genre labels suffice to describe them and their music. They are true originals in their ability to pull from every rock/metal influence under the sun and create something uniquely their own. Next? From some more Metal inspired music try their latest single release, an anime closer track; - “Shambles” - official MV Then, dozens and dozens of amazing tracks - “No God” - official live video - “Domination” - official live video - “Dice” - official MV, then watch “Dice/Hate?” unofficial from Lalapalooza. - “Manners” - official MV, then “Manners / Black Hole” - official online live video Other Masters & Princesses (or Maidiacs) will have a completely different list for you. There is just so much high quality music from the Maids, everyone has different favorites and highlights. Welcome, enjoy the journey, take care and rock on. 🤘🏼🔥🎸🥁🎤🎼😎👏🏼✌🏼

My subjective opinion is that Band-Maid are THE best band in the universe but, if I was being objective, I'd have to say they are THE best band in the universe. Think that's a balanced comment. Japanese female bands are making all the best Rock and Metal for the 21st century - Band-Maid, Lovebites, Nemophila, Babymetal, Asterism to name a few. All superb live.

Tip O' the iceberg! They have so many great songs. Skip the subtitles, enjoy the music first. You can listen to a song many times and pick something new out every time. Each musician put's in her own personality in their writing and no verse is the same.

Haven't watched your reaction yet but the video title is disrespectful in my opinion. They are not a Japanese Maid Cafe band. They are a band that's dressed like the waitresses that work at a Maid Cafe but THAT'S IT.

He doesn’t disrespect Band-Maid in the video, although he did mention anime. I don’t know what kind of anime he’s been watching, but I think he was expecting hentai maids. I would suggest 1.5x speed and be ready with the ten second jump button if you watch it, except for the music, out course.

It's ok. I trust the Maids to turn him around pretty quickly. Anything to accent the Maid to their rightful place in music history. Top band for sure.
