You know these songs are sooo known in Italy that we don’t even hear them anymore. It’s like when you’re born on a beautiful view and can’t recognise how beautiful it is. But when you see them thorough somebody else’s eyes and hear through somebody else’s ears what you already know, and look at the reaction and the wonder on their faces... you see it again for the first time. You hear them again for the first time. Only then you can cry again.

The writer of this song, Lucio Dalla (from Bologna, northern Italy), wrote this while staying in one of the rooms where Enrico Caruso, former famous tenor (From Neaples, southern Italy), spent the final days of his life. Caruso was 48-years-old when he died, and a few years before Caruso died, he married Dorothy Park Benjamin who was 20 years younger. They had a baby girl they named Gloria. Lucio Dalla wrote this song while imagining how Caruso, who knew he was dying, would have said goodbye to his young wife - the love of his life. curiosity: in sicilian dialect the word caruso means (ragazzo) boy. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gNekhth9mK6WqKc.html

Here, where the sea shines and where the wind howls, on the old terrace infront of the Gulf of Sorrento, a man embraces a girl after she has cried then he clears his voice and continues the song: I love you very much, very, very much, you know it is a chain by now that melts the blood inside the veins, you know He saw the lights in the middle of the sea, thought of the nights there in America, but they were only the fishermens lamps and the white wake of a propeller (stern) He felt the pain in the music and got up from the piano, but when he saw the moon emerging from a cloud also the death seemed sweeter to him. He looked in girls eyes, those eyes as green as the sea, then suddenly a tear fell and he believed he was drowning. I love you very much, very, very much, you know, it is a chain by now that melts the blood inside the vein you know The power of lyric, where every drama is fake with a little make-up and with mime you can become someone else. But two eyes that look at you so close and real makes you to forget the words and confuse the thoughts So everything became small, even the nights in America You turn and you see your life like a wake of a propeller (stern) Yeah, it's life that ends, but he didn't think too much about it on the opposite, he felt already happy and began again to sing I love you very much very very much, you know it's become a chain that melts the blood inside the veins, you know

Where do I even begin with this? Luciano Pavarotti has been the greatest tenor of contemporary times. Lucio Dalla has been a genius of Italian music, singer songwriter and excellent musician. Both passed away too early. I can't talk about the song, it would take too long, I just find it amazing.

this is a rare case of musical perfection through timing.. Caruso was an Italian opera tenor, world famous in his time, who married an american woman half his age, fathered a girl with her and then died, still a fairly young man, in the 1920's. He was from Naples. Lucio Dalla was a singer-songwriter who wrote many famous pieces. this was his most internationally well known song. It portrays Caruso at the end of his life, grieving, through music, the fact that he is dying and leaving a young family behind. The song was so well received that it was covered multiple times and amongst many honours and accolades, Dalla was named a honorary citizen of Naples because of it (that's a whole 'nother level of melodrama that is very fitting with Naples and the sentiment of its people)... Luciano Pavarotti was probably the most celebrated and accomplished tenor of his time, certainly one of the most famous ones of the century. I think Lucio Dalla might have peed a little when Luciano accepted to play the part of Caruso and sing it together (Luciano may even have been the one to reach out, since he liked to collab with all kinds of artists). Now that they both have passed, there will probably never be a better pairing of voices and talent to sing this piece than the author of the song and Luciano.

I respect you very much because you have no preconceptions and you listen to music from all over the world !! You are a myth for this !! Luciano Pavarotti was one of the greatest opera singers (Bocelli is nothing compared to Pavarotti). Pavarotti had a global success in his career and he sang in all the theaters of the world! Pavarotti was the only opera singer who organized concerts singing with the greatest pop music singers. Lucio Dalla was one of the greatest Italian songwriters.

Actually he earned the nickname the king of the high C from un fille du regiment where he performed 9 consecutive high C 's . Nessun dorma while a challenging and beautiful aria has been overused and in my opinion there are far greater arias and even neapolitan songs. Vesti La Giubba , Torna a Surriento, una furtiva Lacrima , La Donna E Mobile all are better than the overly used and popularised nessun dorma

Bocelli used to be a student of Pavarotti. Pavarotti is world renowned because he used to host an international event in Modena called Pavarotti and Friends. Anyone famous at that time in world was on that stage, from Bono U2 to Michael Jackson to James Brown. Pavarotti founded a school for lirica singers in Modena. Lucio Dalla is from Bologna, near by Modena, he is one of the most famous singer. Now are both unfortunately death.

Angelo, Lucio Dalla is the guy at the piano, is considered one of the top Italian singer songwriters of all times. He died 9 years ago leaving us a lot of beautiful songs, real poetry, not cheesy lyrics. Great musician he played the clarinet and use to be very ironic about himself and even if quiet and reserved he's buit very strong bonds with many of his collegues. The tenor here is of course the great Luciano Pavarotti who comes from the same Italy region of Lucio Dalla and here sings the songs interpreting Enrico Caruso, the neapoletan tenor who lived between the 19th and 20th centuries. Besides the song being one of the most beautiful ones of the last century here you can easily feel the raw emotion in Pavarottiì's voice. I have got used to reaction mode and interruptions etc yet this time pauses have bothered me a bit (no offense). I am glad you felt the power of this song and performance.

This is a poetic song.. make cry.. Translation Italian - English: Qui dove il mare luccica - Here, where the sea shines E tira forte il vento - And the wind bolws hard Su una vecchia terrazza - On a old terrace Davanti al golfo di Surriento - In front of the Gulf of Surriento Un uomo abbraccia una ragazza - A man embraces a girl Dopo che aveva pianto - After she had been crying Poi si schiarisce la voce - Then he clears his throat E ricomincia il canto - And starts over his song. Te voglio bene assaje - I love you so much Ma tanto tanto bene sai - So, so very much, you know È una catena ormai - It's a chain, by now Che scioglie il sangue nelle vene sai - That melts the blood in the veins.. you know.. Vide le luci in mezzo al mare - He saw the lights in the sea Pensò alle notti là in America - He thought about the nights there in America Ma erano solo le lampare - But they were only fishing vessels Nella bianca scia di un'elica - In the white trail of a propeller Sentì il dolore nella musica - He felt the pain in the music Si alzò dal pianoforte - He stood up from the piano Ma quando vide la luna uscire da una nuvola - But when he saw the moon getting out from a cloud Gli sembrò più dolce anche la morte - He thought the death would be sweeter Guardò negli occhi la ragazza - He looked in the girl's eyes Quegli occhi verdi come il mare - Those eyes green as the sea Poi all'improvviso uscì una lacrima - Then suddenly she shead a tear E lui credette di affogare - And he believed he would drown Te voglio bene assaje - I love you so much Ma tanto tanto bene sai - So, so very much, you know È una catena ormai - It's a chain, by now Che scioglie il sangue nelle vene sai - That melts the blood in the veins.. you know.. Potenza della lirica - Power of the lyric Dove ogni dramma è un falso - Where every drama is a fake Che con un po' di trucco e con la mimica - Than with a little make-up and facial expressions Puoi diventare un altro - You can be someone else Ma due occhi che ti guardano - But two eyes that stare at you Così vicini e veri - So close and so true Ti fan scordare le parole - Make you forget your lines Confondono i pensieri - They mix up your thoughts Così diventa tutto piccolo - So everything gets smaller Anche le notti là in America - Even the nights there in America Ti volti e vedi la tua vita - You turn around and see your life Come la scia di un'elica - As the trail of a propeller Ma sì, è la vita che finisce - But of course, the life is ending Ma lui non ci pensò poi tanto - But he didn't care that much Anzi si sentiva già felice - Anyway, he felt just happy E ricominciò il suo canto - And he started over his song Te voglio bene assaje - I love you so much Ma tanto tanto bene sai - So, so very much, you know È una catena ormai - It's a chain, by now Che scioglie il sangue nelle vene sai - That melts the blood in the veins.. you know.. Listen to Pavarotti singing this alone with English captions. You may be about to enter the rabbit hole that is Pavarotti. Pavarotti has the ability to give you goosebumps and cry. You ain't seen nothing yet.

ok....ready to react to the song that would have won "Eurovision Song Contest 2020" HANDS DOWN, if it wasn't suspendend for covid? The song is "Fai Rumore" by Diodato. Listen it full volume, the chorus will give goosebumps , the highest you ever had. Oh and look at the lyrics too. Very clever lyrics, hard to see such original and clever lyrics on a ending love story nowadays. The song, who won the Sanremo Festival, was performed in an incredible shot inside an empty ancient romans arena like Coliseum, "Arena di Verona", during the lockdown to fortify national spirit in those hard days. You can check both the officila video or the live inside the empty arena, both are incredible

Do you know how Pavarotti's collaboration with pop singers was born? The same day the success of Andrea Bocelli was born. Bocelli recorded the demo of "Zucchero - Miserere", to make Pavarotti listen to him and convince him to sing it.

Lucio Dalla. Great singer, songwriter and also a one man show. He was so charismatic. Maestro Pavarotti... what can we say? Legend. This song can be easily considered a masterpiece. It's musically enchanting and lyrically offers you huge "palette" of images. Stunning. 🇮🇹🤓 Little correction on your pronunciation: the C in both Italian names, Luciano and Lucio, sounds like the C in "Ciao!" or "Chinese" , not a S sound 👍

Lucio Dalla (the one at the piano) was a great Italian singer-songwriter and Luciano Pavarotti was one of the greatest Opera singer in history and a really big and famous international star known all over the world and also in the USA... you never heard of him?! Even Ron Howard made a documentary about him (check it out, it's a really amazing movie)!

OOO I haven't seen this performance! Wow! Is Pavarotti singing in a higher register? I'm sure you have found out by now but...Lucio is the piano player and composer, Luciano is the "big guy". I love Lucio too. This is a very unusual performance from Luciano, he is clearly experimenting with levels of expression that are not used in opera. Here is the story about Andrea Bocelli I read, don't know if it's true. Before Bocelli became famous, he was asked to do a demo tape which his producer would send to Pavorotti. Pavarotti sent back his reply, "You don't need me, you have him!" And so Bocelli got his breakthrough song. The lyrics will only confuse you as they don't spell out who the song is about, or why he is singing it to a "girl". The song is about Enrico Caruso, the opera singer considered the greatest of all by opera singers. At age 48, Enrico learned from his doctors that he was dying. Enrico was very happy in his marriage of 2 yrs to a woman 20 yrs younger than he. Together they had a 2 yr old baby girl. In this song, Enrico is telling his wife how much he loves her and their life together, and that he is dying.

A bit of translation to better understand: Here, where the sea glitters And the wind blows hard Upon an old terrace Before the bay of "Surriento" A man hugs a girl After she wept Then he clears his throat And he starts singing again "Te vogl' bene assaje" (I love you so much) "Ma tanto tanto bene, sai" (So very, very much, you know) "E' 'na catena ormai" (It's a bond now) "Che scioglie il sangue dint' 'e 'vvene sai" (That melts my blood into my veins, you know) He saw the lights in the middle of the sea He thought of the nights there in America But they were just the fishing lights In the white wake of a propeller He felt the pain in the music He got away from the piano But when he saw the moon coming out of a cloud Even death felt sweeter He looked the girl in the eyes Those eyes, green like the sea Then suddenly a tear rolled down And he thought he was drowning "Te vogl' bene assaje" (I love you so much) "Ma tanto tanto bene, sai" (So very, very much, you know) "E' 'na catena ormai" (It's a bond now) "Che scioglie il sangue dint' 'e 'vvene sai" (That melts my blood into my veins, you know) The power of the opera Where every tragedy is a fake And with a little makeup and with your gestures you can become someone else But two eyes looking at you So close and so true They make you forget the lyrics They confuse your thoughts So all becomes very small Even the nights there in America You turn around and see your life Like the wake of a propeller Oh, yes, it's your life ending... But he didn't think so much about it Rather he felt happy already And he started singing again: "Te vogl' bene assaje" (I love you so much) "Ma tanto tanto bene, sai" (So very, very much, you know) "E' 'na catena ormai" (It's a bond now) "Che scioglie il sangue dint' 'e 'vvene sai" (That melts my blood into my veins, you know)

Another Lucio Dalla masterpiece that you should listen to (with English translation to undertand the wonderful lyrics) is "Anna and Marco". When I see how many masterpieces of Italian music are completely unknown abroad, I wonder how many masterpieces of other nations that not are USA or UK, we will never have the opportunity to listen and appreciate.

FYI the one you refer to as Lucio is actually Luciano Pavorotti. You can check out his performances of Pavorotti & Friends. He brought opera singing and pop music together. Bocelli built his career on that.
