Welcome to Voiceplay's HUGE rabbit hole 😀. Beside this one, they did at least another iconic rock song: Aerosmith's "Dream on". And it's been "conceived" as the sequel of "Warriors", originally by Imagine Dragons, which is the only other video where you can see and hear VioLayne (BTW, J None also plays violin there). 🙂 Now, given the name of your channel, you'll probably like their rendition of "My Mother told me", and the next song they're going to release soon, which I believe is kind of the sequel to it: "Valhalla calling". The teaser is already EPIC... and Geoff hits notes that are well lower than these... 😁 Maybe you would enjoy "The Dragonborn comes - Skyrim" as well 🙂 I'll be waiting for your next reactions to them. 🙂 See you next time! 🙂 PS: please, don't make comparisons between the various groups. They're just different, and each of them is phenomenal in its own way. 🙂 I love all FOUR of them... Pentatonix, Voiceplay ("The theatre kids of a cappella"... and with good reason!), Home Free and The Bass Gang. Oh, BTW: Avi, Geoff and Tim Foust from Home Free are good friends. And again, they don't like to be compared. 😁

Everything you said!! Every group/band/whatever has a different approach to music-and should have, since if they’re any good, they’re creative, not just imitative. So PTX is not doing the same thing as Home Free, which is not doing the same thing as Voiceplay, which is not doing the same thing as The Bass Gang or Rockapella. They can all be amazing in their own ways. It’s reasonable to talk about how the groups might handle a certain thing differently and how that affects the music, but we don’t need to pick a winner.

The violin has only appeared in one prior video, and has earned the beat boxer the name VioLayne (Layne Stein). He and Geoff (the bass) alternate doing the vocal arrangements and video concepts. Favorites are: Hoist the Colours, Warriors, Carry On Wayward Son, Tennessee Whiskey, Dream On, Queen in 5 Minutes, the Wicked Medley, Butter, Bang, Superstition.

Hoist the Colours is another great one, also arranged by Geoff. Layne ( the beat boxer and violin player) also arranges music. They call the violin “Violayne”. Geoff has a 5-octave range. From A0 (growl), B0 (subharmonics), F#1 (full chest), A5 (falsetto). Layne is on the other end of the line up and he does incredible vocal percussion, baritone from high school days, and violinist - which has given rise to his alter ego, VioLayne. He's only done it one other time in Warriors (Imagine Dragons). The bald guy in the center is Eli (rhymes with jelly) is an amazing rock tenor with a killer range, Cesar (guy with the afro) is VoicePlay's newest member. J None was a member of VoicePlay but he was recruited by the US Navy for a 5 yr stint of which he has about 2 yrs done. A lot of us are hoping he will rejoin when he gets out of the Navy. At his goodbye party he said he'd be back and when he gets leave he comes back to Orlando and does another full length video with VP, Layne and Geoff are original founding members from being together since middle school. One of the other founding members, Earl, left the group for personal reasons and he has a remarkable voice. You can hear him sing in Queen in 5 Minutes. Cesar can be heard in I Can't Make You Love Me, and We're Good. On leave after bootcamp, J None did the lead in Friends on the Other Side. If you will keep doing VoicePlay reactions, their fans will follow. I know I'm one.

I posted this on a couple of other channels with first time reactions to Voiceplay. If this is your first experience with Voiceplay, allow me to introduce you to the boys! left to right, we have: Geoff Castellucci (pronounced "Jeff") Human subwoofer bass with an amazing 5 octave range and perfect hair...also does about half their arrangements. J. None (former full member, currently in the navy.) Beautiful R&B Baritone, and collaborates with them whenever he is on leave. Hopefully he returns when he is out of the navy! Eli Jacobsen (Pronounced "Elly" like "jelly) little bald rockstar tenor. Does most of the lighting for their videos. There is nothing this guy can't do! SO. MUCH. TALENT! Cesar De La Rosa: Newest member of the group...voice of an angel baritone/tenor amazingness! And last but not least, Layne Stein...vocal percussion voodoo master with an amazing singing voice we don't get to hear enough of. The other half of the group's arranging "dynamic duo". Just sheer genius! And he plays the violin too! Welcome to the Voiceplay rabbit-hole! I love hearing people discover them for the first time. They always cover really unexpected songs and make them absolutely brilliant! Enjoy!

Geoff uses sub-harmonics to hit those insanely low notes. Next to him is J None, he was a member of Voiceplay until the US Navy recruited him in 2021 to sing with them. Next, the bald tenor is Eli Jacobson (pronounced to rhyme with jelly), he is a rocking beast and hit that highest note in this one. Next is Cesar de la Rosa, new, joined in 2021 after J left. Finally, Layne Stein the beatboxer, also baritone and VioLayne. Geoff and Layne are founding members of the group since 1997. All of them have extraordinary ranges. They are completely independent, no label, no manager. Geoff and Layne take turns doing the arrangements. Whoever does the arrangement usually plans the story board, set design, costumes, makeup, cameras, and does the initial editing. They bring in additional camera and makeup crews for their more elaborate covers. They are known as the theater kids of acapella. They have four permanent members and work with a variety of featured artists. Because they are independent, they don't get the publicity that they should. They used to tour extensively pre-pandemic, but are not planning any tours at this time. Anything you react to will be great, guaranteed. If you want more metal, try Dream On. They will be dropping Vahalla Calling in a week or so, be prepared. Subscribed in anticipation of more Voiceplay.

Honestly, every guy in this group has a crazy range. Cesar is a baritenor who can fit just about anywhere, J.None is a baritone with a great upper range and impeccable falsetto, Eli is a rock tenor that has filled in the background bass for Geoff in live performances, Geoff has a full five octaves including subharmonics, and Layne has a lovely baritone singing voice and can make literally any sound with his mouth under the sun while beatboxing including some noises as low as Geoff and higher ones as well.

Welcome to our world of Voiceplay... I am also a metal head of many years, once I discovered Voiceplay, I have been converted to a cappella too.. I originally found them as I was looking for Disney songs for grandkids and VP have done some fantastic medleys.. Along with Ballads, Pop songs, game theme tunes, rock/metal (among others genres.) Apart from this classic, they have also re imagined Aerosmith's Dream on... Kansas.... Wayward Son, Journey, Anyway you want it....(& Don't stop believing).... With the Name Viking... You should listen to My Mother Told me, which originates as a Viking call to arms/chant/prayer... As a tic toker you might have heard Hoist the colours, but not like VP have done it. Dragonborn comes is brilliant, as is the Halo theme..... They've done Stranger things Kate Bush.... Running up that hill..... Too many to mention... J.None was featured in this one, but until recently he was a full time member, but left to join the military.. We are hoping he'll come back when his time is up. .. VP like to bring in collaborators to feature with them... You can never get bored with their sound... Good luck... Subscribed in anticipation of more and subsequently Geoff who has his own solo channel... My favourite of his is Ghost riders in the sky, followed closely by Sound of silence, Shenendoah & Ain't no silence... 😊

I really enjoyed your reaction and am now a new subscriber to your page. I can tell by your name, background behind you, and interests that you will become a huge fan of Voice Play (fans are called "Voice Players") very quickly. Voice Play is very different in their approach to acapella music as they are very theatrical and called the theater kids of acapella music. They can really rock out and blow you away with their covers. You already know Geoff Castellucci is their bass singer, beatboxer is Layne Stein (we call him "Violayne' now), Eli (pronounced like it rhymes with "Jelly") is the bald high rock tenor, Cesar De La Rosa is the busy haired baritone, and J None is the black gentleman that you kept calling Matt. You would love Voice Play's cover of "Warriors" as Layne really rocks out on the violin while beatboxing and J None also plays the violin. You should check out their Viking themed cover of "My Mother Told Me" right away as Voice Play is about to release a Viking themed sequel to that one soon, "Valhalla Calling" that will blow everybody away!! You would also love "Hoist The Colours" from Pirates Of The Caribbean and "Dragonborn Comes" from Skyrim. I look foward to this journey with you!

VoicrPlay stand alone in the acapella world as the theatre kids of a cappela. Their videos are often mini musicals, but they have a very wide range of genres and never disappoint. A few things to mention, no one is ever ready for Geoff, they always come in straight away, and they often add a bit after the song finishes. As for going hight, they all have a wide vocal range. Eli and Cesar can go pretty high. Cheick them out in Dream On. :) And yes Geoff uses subharmonics to go very very low. I get so made when people saying it's cheating to have a violin interlude in what it otherwise a capella. The majority of the song is done a capella. But I will subscribe in the hope of seeing you see more of what they do.

Loved your reaction !! J. None was a member of the group for a while, and left to sing for the US Navy ... he has recorded with them a few times since his departure. Geoff has a 5 octave range, but the low 'booms' were coming from vocal percussionist Layne. Eli (rhymes with jelly) could sing a baby to sleep, then front a metal band 2 hours later, and the G5 you heard on 'yeaahhhh' was Cesar (the one with the baby face and voice of an angel). I you react to 'Dream On', you'll see the multiple sides of Cesar. These guys are all so, so talented.

Welcome to the mad world of Voiceplay. They are absolute professionals at what they do. Geoff and Layne arrange most of their songs and are certainly masters of their craft. The sounds Layne can make are absurd. Geoff's range is crazy especially when considering the quality of this tone across his entire range. J. None left the group to pursue other endeavors, but still comes back from time to time. Must listen Voiceplay songs Oogie Boogie's Song (Nightmare Before Christmas) shows a pretty decent chunk of Geoff's range, and is just an absolute joy to listen to. My Mother Told Me - Great viking track and Geoff's lows will blow your mind. Hoist The Colours (feat. Jose Rosario Jr.) Enemy - Imagine Dragons (feat. AleXa) If I Were A Rich Man (feat. Ashley Diane)

Just found you thanks to this video. Take a trip through the full VoicePlay catalog. They are all worth a listen even if you don't do a video for each one. OK I'm going to go off on a tangent here and kind of describe how I see the various A Capella groups. Pentatonix are the "Cool Kids" or another way I look at them is as one of the "Boy Bands" from the mid '90's to the early '00's (yes I know they are not all boys). VoicePlay are the "Theater Kids" they like dressing up and putting on a show. Home Free are the "Country Boys" putting out nothing but good wholesome music and doing some Gospel songs as well. There is a fourth that I have listened to that just tickle the ears. The Bass Gang their name says it all. Geoff Castellucci also has a solo channel where he does some of his own projects. Going to have a look through your various reactions now. Looking forward to seeing what else "rocks" your world.

Comment #2 now that I saw the whole thing ☺️! First of all I have to compliment you on your backdrop and also a very cool shirt. Great reaction! I’m not a metalhead so I did have to go out to listen to the original and as I recall their opening is very reminiscent of that simple guitar work at the very beginning. You did a good job catching that Geoff was using subharmonics for those lowest tones. In HALO he got down to a B0 and I believe he got to an A0 in Enemy. Mind you they were not sustained notes but he did hit them. He is indeed one of those guys with an insane range: five octaves. The beat boxer who was originally the baritone also has five octaves using inhaled phonation. Eli (rhymes with jelly), the bald tenor rock god who did the high note (although Cesar hit it in Dream On), is not far behind I believe he’s at 4 1/2 octaves. I’m not sure what J and Cesar’s range is, but none of them stay in their own lane. I also think that J has a very old school soul sound and absolutely love it. Layne at the far end is the beatboxer, he’s also a baritone, and obviously a skilled musician. His beatboxing is pretty different as employs a lot of organic sounds not found in the drum kit. It’s always fun for us to anticipate what kind of crazy sound is going to come up with next! At times you may see Geoff doing a little beatboxing as he’s the one who taught Layne in the beginning. One of my favorites of their older works is Death of a Bachelor which has five parts but only two people singing: Geoff and Earl, their original high tenor (really high), and Geoff does the beatboxing in it. If your headphones are really loud you’re probably going to want to turn them down a bit when Valhalla Calling Me starts. It’s pretty heavy on the percussion and I about jumped out of my skin and I started listening to it.

They have many fun and amazing songs! Other commenters have mentioned My Mother Told Me and their soon to be released cover of Valhalla Calling, which yes, I'm certain you will want to check out. Hoist the Colours is another astounding performance. Geoff Castellucci has his own solo channel, and I'm betting you'd enjoy his covers of Ghost Riders in the Sky and Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold in particular, but you can't really go wrong with anything that catches your eye in either of their channels. Liked, subscribed and looking forward to more! *ETA:* Also meant to add, they'll often slip a little 'unnecessary' Geoff bass drop or two into their songs; yes, they're meant to impress, but the fans love it and look for it, and I've come to think of it as almost a sort of trademark or station identification: 'I'm Geoff Castellucci, and you're listening to VoicePlay.'

Loved your reaction, thanks! Their arrangements are always incredible. Typically they start stripped down, pretty much following the original for the first verse.... then all bets are off. They never repeat from verse to verse or even in the chorus, there's always something new to listen to. I have a bit of ADHD too, and my biggest problem is boredom. These guys never, ever bore me, and for me, that's one of the highest compliments. I may need to listen several times to hear or to see it all (lots of their videos are as filled with detail as their vocals) but that's one of the things I love about them. It's never complexity for the sake of complexity, each turn of the screw lifts the entire piece higher. Looking forward to seeing more from you. Check out their cover of the Halo theme...

Surprised no one has listed everyone. From left to right. Geoff- Bass J. None- Baritone/former member guest star Eli(Elly)- Tenor Caesar- Baritone Layne- Beatbox None of them really stay in their lane though and all of them have 4+ octave range.

Although Geoff started out his early days beatboxing, he only does bass beats nowadays and leaves the beatboxing to Layne. As for that "rock scream" right before the violin got pitched in, Caesar was behind that note (guy with all the curly hair and angelic voice). Eli (bald guy) could also hit that note, but he was carrying the lead at the time. Glad you finally found time to peek in on Voice Play. When you want to scratch that country a capella itch, listen to Home Free. Man of Constant Sorrow and End of the Road are both good choices for an introduction.

Yes, Geoff has a very large range. from A0-A5. He was using the subharmonic technique for the super low notes. However, he is still good to F#1 in chest voice (only two semitones higher than his lowest subharmonic note in this cover), which is still extremely low for a bass.

That very low BOOM is a plug-in sound added in post-production, but that inhaled, grumbly "wow" later on was created by Layne.

I usually don’t subscribe immediately to a channel (I have way too many subscriptions-I’m starting to miss new stuff). But I love love LOVE it when a new reactor GETS what these guys are doing. Agree, Geoff has always been amazing, but I think when COVID shut everybody down he decided to use the time to really develop his bass even more-his technique which was always great is SO tight now. As for the VioLAYNE cheat-we had to wait three years to hear him play again, but he did it once before in their cover of Warriors-which is the prequel to their cover of Dream On. You are in for a great ride if you keep listening to these guys. It’s not all (or even more than a little) metal, but it’s all amazing. Terrific reaction-MORE please!!!

I've listened to a lot of Pentatonix but I don't seek out acapella so I've never heard this band before. I was like grooving, along for the ride, and then that Fabio dude broke in with the lowest singing I might've ever heard, that was wicked!

Subscribing in the hopes of more VoicePlay/Geoff Castelucci reactions. If you want to start in the Rock genre with them, try Dream On, Carry On Wayward Son and Queen In 5 Minutes. But you won't go wrong with anything, no matter the genre. They are a delight!

So glad you enjoyed your first experience with VoicePlay! I hope you'll continue reacting to them - VoicePlay never seems to go wrong! Geoff Castellucci also has a solo channel that he started during the pandemic lockdown when VoicePlay couldn't perform or tour, and he has some amazing songs available there as well! VoicePlay and Geoff generally put out about 1 video a month, and both have new videos in the works for release coming up soon. Unlike PTX (and older Home Free videos), VoicePlay has never had a record label and doesn't even have a manager - they exercise complete creative control over their output, so you shouldn't have to worry about doing anything to the video as far as blurring, overlays, etc. - they love reactors, and it's great advertising for them to get their music out to more people. VoicePlay is actually the oldest of the 3 big a cappella groups - they began in 1997 (under a different name), and Geoff and Layne are the only original members left from that group. They are a 5-person (so far all permanent members have been male) band, but have been 1 member short for a couple of years now, so they've been filling out their numbers with a featured artist on new videos. In this video it was J. None, who was a permanent member but was recruited to be part of the US Navy's band, so he has guest starred with them on several videos when he's on leave.

Please you gotta react to "Hide & Seek" from The Bass Gang ft. Lauren Paley!! The group is made up of Tik-Tok's best Bass vocalists. The video is very entertaining and they are ridiculously good at doing the bell chimes, that Pentatonix is famous for and it adds a nice haunting effect. As for the extreme bass notes in the song, they are jaw dropping and mind blowing.. a lot of vocal fry and subharmonics. It's so F'n good!

The thing about the Big Three is that they are all so talented vocally that any ranking comes down to other things, like arrangement and preference for song choice & style. For me it's very very close between VP and Home Free, with the former usually ahead mainly because I relate more to the theatrical style. It doesn't mean I admire PTX any less, but I do listen to them less. As for more VP songs, other people have made some great suggestions so I won't add to the list...yet!

It's now Friday 7th April and they just dropped their version of Valhalla Calling. It's already destroyed several reactors. Buckle up for that one. Geoff has an amazing range. See OOgie Boogie's Song. In his solo stuff, he sings with versions of himself, doing all parts. Or see his version of The Beatles' Blackbird, with piano. Voiceplay aslo have done Dream On by Aerosmith, Dragonborn Comes from the game, Skyrim, and The Halo Theme where they talk about their early days at the end in a tribute to a lost team member..

VP has a lot of fun songs. The best thing they've ever done is _probably_ Mountain King, but Hoist the Colours and Rich Man are also really good; and if you are a rock music fan, you will probably like Dream On and Carry On Wayward Son. They also do a lot of Disney stuff, and a lot of fun Halloween stuff, and assorted other things. You may also be interested in Geoff's covers of Blackbird, Sixteen Tons, Way Down, and Sound of Silence.
