For the first time, Metallica: Back to the Front tells the fully authorized story of the creation of the Master of Puppets album and the subsequent tour. Featuring new and exclusive interviews with band members James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, and Kirk Hammett, this is the definitive account of the most venerated period of Metallica’s history, from the incredible highs of touring in support of Ozzy Osbourne to the lows of losing a key member of the band and crucial part of the Metallica sound.

Lucas Zheng Kirk and Cliff switched bunks the night of the bus accident. Kirk has always had survivor guilt because of that. He always said it could have been him. The fact that they were all very close and that Cliff was in the prime of his life and to have it taken away in the blink of an eye through no fault of your own is a hard thing to swallow. I will never forget hearing the news. I was lucky enough to see Metallica on the Master of Puppets tour in Hampton Va just a few weeks before the accident. I always wondered what Metallica would have become if Cliff would have survived.

After Cliff's tragic death in 1986, the band interviewed dozens of bassists to find his replacement. They involved both of Burton's parents in the decision to choose Jason Newsted. Cliff's parents were present during the announcement, and after the band broke the news to Newsted, Burton's mother, hugged him tightly and said, "You are the one. Please, be safe." That is so epic and breathtaking.

It's that, plus, I'm sure, a large amount of survivor's guilt. Kirk is here and Cliff is not because of the luck of the draw over which bunk each got to sleep in that fateful night. Had Kirk lost, he likely would have died, and Cliff would still be here. Pretty heavy stuff to deal with at any age, let alone when you're only in your early twenties.

Every old man should want to grow up and be like Ray Burton, who, just like Cliff, just full of energy and an aura like no other. Sept 27, 1986 was the day the music died, but another one was born out of spirit and love and such admiration for these two magnificent people. Like Jesus from the dead, there was death, then it was reborn to live on forever. The Metal Militia rides on and is never to be stopped ever again! Metallica still RULES!!!!

Kirk is the person in Metallica that I find most interesting and I generally skip through any interviews to hear what he has to say, mainly because for so many years he hasn't really been given the chance to talk and be himself because of the two controlling egos in the band. After decades I still don't know or understand Kirk, but I just know that he is a really decent guy... I hope that one day Kirk will open up and tell HIS story and his perspective of Metallica without fear or control from Hetfield, Ulrich or management.

I’d love to read a book if he wrote one. Like a autobiography, Kirk is my biggest inspiration on guitar and seeing him getting emotional here talking about Cliff breaks my heart, I can’t imagine going through what he went through. In the back to the front book when they talk about Cliffs death, kirks sister mentions that Kirk walked around the house and kept saying it should’ve been me, he has survivors guilt and I can’t imagine going through that.

Yeah, I think Kirk has always been happy with his place in the band and has always let his virtuosity on guitar speak for him. I believe he is just a sensitive artist who would rather focus on that rather then the other trappings of the business. I'm honestly surprised the band has lasted as long as it has with 2 alphas like Lars and James at the helm. If any of the others were like that, there would be no Metallica today. Some even say Cliff wouldn't have made it.

@@metalmaniac8640 As far as I could tell from the BTM version (and this could be the way it's edited) Cliff gets crushed by the bus at approximately 7 AM, and I presume his body gets taken away from the scene by an ambulance or something, and the band go with him to the hospital, then arrive back at their hotel later on that evening, totally shell shocked, begin drinking heavily, and then James is out on the street the next morning screaming for Cliff.

The day I heard Cliff had died, it felt like all my blood drained out of my body. Shock and disbelief set in. I couldn't think straight, focus. To know the guy I idolized had been taken. All these years later, it's still with me. I've been hooked on Metallica since No Life Til Leather. First time I heard Cliff play, I was blown away. I knew immediately that no one in my lifetime would ever come close to his ability. To have just watched this video, and see Kirk get emotional, I'm flooded with the feelings and emotions of that day all those years ago. Hell I'm going to be 48 this year, and I can still listen to his bass, and be moved like I was as a kid. Even though he died decades ago, I still idolized him. RIP Cliff. I hope you have some more killer bass solos written for when I shuffle off this mortal coil.

I remember the moment I heard Cliff had died. These guys were my heros back then, and knowing that part of my life was over at age 14 felt very profound at the time. Watching how much it still hurts Kirk takes me back and makes me realize again how much music lost that day. RIP Cliff, you were my favorite. :)

I think Kirk feel's partly responslble since he and Cliff switched bunks the night before over the draw of cards and had they just stayed in thier original bunks then it might been him instead of Cliff.Reminds me of Waylon Jennings taking the bus instead of getting on the plane with Buddy Holly that day he died, the last thing they ever said to each other was Buddy telling Waylon I hope your bus stalls and his reply to Buddy was I hope your plane crashes and Jennings said that ate at him for a long time.

just shows how deep is the brotherhood relationship between them.....surely, they are now one of the best, if not the best, thrash metal band of all time.....but before that, back in the day, they all started together.......learning together, helping together, creating a beautiful bond between themselves, understanding each other's abilities....Cliff is an instrumental part of Metallica.....they all know that, we all know that....and still getting emotional and tearing up for your beloved friend, even after 3 decades.....thats real friendship....

I knew Cliff growing up. The one memory I have is I just showered and I was in the car at a gas station. I was going to shake up a drink I just bought at the store and I forgot I already loosened the top so when I shook it the top came off and I damn near soaked the car. He just opened the door and looked in right as I shook it in to my face and all in my hair. He literally choked laughing at my stupidity. It literally looked like I pranked myself. Miss you, Cliff. Til we see each other again.

I had the chance to meet Ray Burton when I was younger since his family was coworkers with my father and news got around to him that we were huge Metallica fans. He showed us all of Cliff's old guitars and we were in complete awe and couldn't help but get emotional. My brother and I played in a metal band at the time and we had the chance to perform the intro of fade to black for him and I could see he was emotional as well we were. I will never forget that day. He was so humble and loving. Rest in Peace, Ray. I know you're in heaven now with your son.

If you go back and watch their 1986 interview when Jason has just joined, watch Kirks portion. This is where I noticed that he has this very open and innocent side to him. He was talking about his love for comics and there was this very vulnerable quality in his voice. That comes out here too and he lets his emotions show. Whereas I think James had that much sadness and maybe more but he was holding his back and putting on a smile. You can tell in his anxious laugh. Great guys overall.

i read somewhere that cliff was the one in charge but doubted it knowing how james and lars started the band and of their egos. but watching their old live videos again now as an older dude and not just a fanboy i saw cliff really had an undeniable presence especially on stage. realizing how much pull he had in a band with focking lars and king james to have a song that starts with a long bass solo that progresses to be the core sound of the main riff of that song and use more wah than kirk. cliff was boss. he naturally made james and lars look like his younger brothers on stage. and i think maybe more so with kirk him eventually having to deal with james and lars giant egos for years. and now hearing him talk about missing cliff and cliff being about equality and fairness which maybe with cliff's absence, kirk wasn't able to express himself as much and contribute more effectively. damn crazy to think how all the metal bands of the last 3 decades would sound different today if cliff was alive and they kept/progressed with that dynamic and trajectory they were on.
