1991 in Russia was a special time. This particular show named “Monsters of Rock” took place in USSR that has been completely dissolved later, the same year. First and last metal festival of that scale in USSR. One of the main cultural events that had shaped the following decade. I was born in 1989 in Russia (and still living here) and 90’s were a tough period for the people here. I don’t remember first five years of the decade well personally but the echo of that time period still affects us. People in USSR of the Iron Curtain period (that officially ended in 1993) haven’t had an experience with such things. There was a cultural blockade and after 1993 there was an explosion: people realized that there is a lot of things they can do. 90’s were the time of business tightly bonded with organized crime like mafia in US. And people in Russia were obsessed by the “American Dream”. It all started in the late 80’s and was the time of the denial of soviet legacy. And this metal festival was a revolution in Russian musical traditions brought straight from the USA. A part of the same “American Dream”. It was like “that’s what they listen to in America”. Very significant and truly historical event. I’ve simplified some things here a little: there was metal in Russia already. Rock music and heavy metal weren’t a completely alien phenomenon. There were bands playing metal but it was the first event of this scale featuring very popular bands from abroad. Almost all the people you’ve seen there had their first metal concert ever. Just imagine. It was like a breath of fresh air for the first time in their life after years of isolation in the stuffy place. I don’t say that everything before was bad. I’m saying how people felt there. Now we have a lot of metal shows and festivals featuring bands from abroad, Metallica including. It seems like common stuff now but it all has started there, in 1991 in Moscow on the Tushino aerodrome where 1.6 million people almost literally touched the real metal music for the first time.

This story is straight from the Bible. When Moses tried to bring God's word to the Egyptian's. This is how I convinced my mom Metallica wasn't devil music.

Saw Metallica in 1989 during the Justice tour. They played this song later in the first set. Wasn't a huge place, but it was crowded. Few days later rumor spread that several security guards "stepped" into the lobby area near the doors during our "DIE" chant.

Not sure if it's been mentioned yet in the comments, but when James Hetfield was on Joe Rogan's podcast he said that this performance will always be in his mind as one of the most significant moments in world history. Communism had yet to fall but he said he could see it slowly unraveling during that performance. 1.5M people chanting "DIE!" would be sobering for those military guys providing security. That would be a HIGH "pucker factor" for sure! Great reaction, man! Watch "Harvester Of Sorrow" from the same show. Mindblowing!

I highly recommend you check out Metallica's Call of Ktulu and Orion. Both are instrumentals where they really flex their muscle with just their instruments. Both are musical masterpieces.

Lyrics are a GREAT to have, Metal music can be pretty deep and first listeners tend to overlook them. Black Sabbath started this genre in 1970 with the song also named Black Sabbath. Give it a listen one day.

To truly appreciate this song, watch that movie with Yul Brenner (who plays the Egyptian Pharoah) and Charleston Heston ( who plays Moses). I think that it came out in the 1950s. You'll understand the song more.

I got to see them in 94. The show was nuts. Kirk Hammet said yeah MFer a lot. I noticed they didn't show a lot of his face in this performance😂 I'm not one to watch reaction vids much but I have to say, your reactions keep me watching.

Ever since the end of WWII, Moscow and U.S. had been growing into greater and greater enemies. Communism vs democracy. Proxy wars. Korea. Vietnam. Cuban Missile Crisis. Cold War. Spying. Space Race. Nuclear Arms Race. Star Wars Defense. Movies like The Day After and Red Dawn, etc., to set the mood. Eventually the U.S. outlasted the Soviet Union who was spread too thin and did not have the economy to match us. Soviet Union began to crumble. Yet, here was Russia allowing Metallica into Moscow, their power center. Trying to signal a new freedom for its people and an openness to the West? But it's still Moscow. Authorities all over the place. Tension. Built up angst in the attendees. So when the crowd starts flying all around with energy, and everyone screams "Die" repeatedly for five minutes. It's a heckuva moment. Die Communism? Die Cold War? Die going to bed in fear? Die anyone who tries that again! - I know others played Moscow. Billy Joel, etc? But Metallica doesn't mess around. 2 - 3 hrs of a musical middle finger to the Man on volume 12. - In any complete timeline of history, this concert has an entry.

Back in 1991 I was 18/19 serving in the US Navy.

That Moscow footage always trips me out. The camera pans from left to right and all you see, from the stage to the horizon, is a sea of people.

That concert is one of the best they ever recorded. They were at the top of their game and playing in front of a million and a half Russians that just needed to blow off some steam after the Berlin Wall fell and the USSR dissolved a couple of years before. The band and the audience fed off each other's energy like few shows I've seen.

Creeping Death is the greatest song written about the story of Passover. 1.6 Million people....and this is only 3rd on the all time list of crowds at an open air concert. #1 is Rod Stewart at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with a crowd of 3.5 Million in 1994. #2 was Jean Michel Jarre in 1997 also in Russia, like that Metallica show, with 3.5 Million.

The final show from the 1991 Monsters of Rock European tour. Crowd estimates range from 800,000 to 1.5 million. This was in the dying days of the Soviet Union, just a couple of months before it was dissolved. Apparently Mikhail Gorbachev himself gave approval for the concert. Note that Metallica weren't even the headliners, AC/DC was.

I don't know if anybody mentioned it but this song was written when Cliff Burton who was their first Bassist who was killed in a freak bus accident. He wrote it when he watching the Charlton Heston Ten Commandments movie. When the Green fog comes into Egypt to kill the first born is why they say Die, Die, Die, so understand they are not just screaming that just to be screaming it, LOL.

i saw them early when monsters of rock came to my aria, tried to make my way to the front for metalica was stuck in the middle for most of their performance like 10 rows deep, no joke at one point my feet diddnt even touch the ground for a good 5 mins maybe 10, and i was 165 lbs at 5 11, just jam packed and sway with the crowd ,no control .... good times ... awesome show
