Yeah Cliff was classically trained, and Orion is seen as his swan song so it's very sacred territory for Metallica fans. Structurally, this is a sonata allegro (in short, a musical piece where a main motif or theme is introduced, developed and then returned to in a final form in three stages), so it's basically a piece of classical music, done by heavy metal instruments. On their next album, they used whatever riffs and melodies Cliff had left behind and made them into another (great) instrumental track (though there's 4 lines of spoken poetry in it) as an homage to his memory, called To Live is to Die. I kinda think Sori would enjoy that one. Mikael Akerfeldt even says that if not for that song, Opeth wouldn't exist, so I hope you can do that sometime too.

@FarukAhmet
@FarukAhmet 6 жыл бұрын
DesertHigh No one said it's "meant to be interpreted as classical music", whatever that means, just that the arrangement of the sections fits the sonata form, and that it's not surprising, and unlikely to be a coincidence when you consider Burton's training and interest in classical music, especially Bach (the next song on the album starts with an extended bass intro based on a Bach piece, even). None of this has anything to do with "intelligence", that's your childish presumption. Also the notion that you can't talk about parallels with another genre of music because the instruments are different is just silly.
@michaelvondrake7489
@michaelvondrake7489 6 жыл бұрын
DesertHigh under another comment, I mentioned a Classical Conductor compared it to Classical. And if you listen to Classical Music semi-regularly, you will hear it also, if you're honest with yourself.

I've broken my lurk mode after months of watching your reactions just to comment on this video (because its that important to me and many others I think). Sori, could you listen to it again, with headphones, on your own, and as usual, close your eyes. But this time, think about the nature of your own life, the up's and down's - let the feel of each current moment of the song help you choose where to go next, and let it narrate what it is you choose. The music IS the story. What parts of your life were an adventure? What parts were a struggle? What parts were sublime and which you felt very grateful for? Which parts are of you moving on from something and growing? Keep in mind also, this was the pinnacle of their original lineup work, and it was a piece that the immortalized who is regarded as one of the most legendary bass guitarists in metal history, because the majority of what you hear in this song (and in master of puppets) came from him. The writing and playing of this track was a very personal bonding between all the members. Cliff was the one who introduced the suggestion of melodic writing into their work, it is mostly because of him that Metallica hits more feels than for instance, Megadeth, and proves that technical superiority doesn't make music actually superior in the human aspect. Some trivia: James Hetfield, the vocalist/rhythm guitarist, has the notes to the middle of Orion tattoo'ed on one of his forearms. Also, thousands of guitarists around the world became musicians specifically because of the emotional impact this song had on them. I feel this track does not and never will need lyrics. Sometimes they just don't. The scales, harmonies, and rhythms of the instruments are the lyrics. You can hear it all day, but you have to actually listen. Consider my suggestion, Sori. :)

Solid 10 for me. Musically, one of the most astute and progressive arrangements in Metallica's catalog. Should you do a full album listen to Master of Puppets? Yeah. 100% yes. The whole album builds upon itself, and every song increases the overall impact. Vin, though, Damage, Inc. is musically heavier than Disposable Heroes, thought the lyrical content is way heavier in the latter song. Switching gears, maybe one day listen to Iron Maiden's Transylvania, the granddaddy of metal instrumentals.

Yes Cliff went to school for music theory. He was the heart and soul of 80s Metallica. If you want to fully appreciate Cliff you need to react to Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth) video. It's the bass solo that got him into the band. James and Lars though it was just a really heavy guitar at first then realized he was playing bass. He really revolutionized how the bass was played.

I'm the opposite, a lot of times I'd prefer instrumental over vocals, or even a foreign language song where I can't understand whats being said. There are a tonne of great lyricists and vocalists out there, not saying that there isn't at all, but a song without them is more about how the music in a raw state makes you feel. Edit: Think you have a point Sori, some instrumentals do sound like they should have lyrics but it's stripped away, kinda like back in the day a cd or tape for a single might have an instrumental version included.
@Wilss

Luke Smith Me too. I think it depends on what you go for. I'm much more about the music so I listen to a lot of Prog Rock without singing. I'm all about music writing over lyrics.
@leeloominai8186
@leeloominai8186 6 жыл бұрын
@Wills: It also depends on what you had to work with when you were younger. For example for me (Europe 80s) I often could not even access the lyrics as a text (I know, sounds weird in 2018) - you could not even buy the "official" tapes in stores (yes that was the time: the courtesy of Soviet Union blocking anything that was produced in the western countries,) so you were left with dictionary to decode the titles and then, well, good luck decoding the actual lyrics from listening to the tape considering that #1 the quality was not so great (the tapes were likely copied by someone in their garage and the affordable tape players were notoriously terrible) #2 English is a nightmare to decipher "by ear" for someone not used to it: it sounds like a boiling water initially, I am not kidding: it's not even easy to find out where the words start and begin #3 the idioms in English are atrocious to interpret/guess by themselves (and they are everywhere.) #4 metal singers were not exactly known for their crystal-clear way of singing in the first place... So, the best you could get was some "black market" lyrics someone managed to "xero"-copy and distribute around fans... Fortunately, with time it got better, but still, until then, one had mostly to use imagination to "paint" the meaning of the lyrics in.

This masterpiece is in my top 5 Metallica songs. It’s also Cliff’s magnum opus and was played at his funeral. Sometimes the bass and guitar is so good they add enough colour to a song without the need for vocals. Vocals would ruin this song, imo. This song takes you on a journey without the need for vocals. The instruments create such an amazing atmosphere and unique feel - for me I feel like I’m floating through space seeing just the stars and planets all around me, and being at total peace in that moment. The Call of Ktulu is also a great instrumental by Metallica that also creates its own atmosphere. Check out the live version with the SF Symphony.

I have seen a lot of people online, who have no interest in metal whatsoever, listen to Metallica (and Orion in particular) and get legitimately moved. It's great to see. They are obviously the king of kings of metal, and really deserve to be on the Mt. Rushmore of rock in general. Their variety and composition is genius (thank you, James, for your talent, and Lars for being a mad scientist when it comes to stitching the songs together), and they can go from speed to melodic to gallop and get you pumped every time.

Personally I've always loved metal instrumentals. You learn real quick how good or bad a band is as writing music. Most people focus on the lyrics and singing but when you take that out of the equation it forces a band to really concentrate on making a song as interesting as possible. I have always loved Orion & Call of Ktulu and To ive is to Die. All 3 are great peices of music and song structure. Another one at the top of my list is Woodpecker from Mars off the Real thing CD from Faith No More. Probably one of the most influential and underated bands of the late 80's and 90's. Listen to Billy Gould's bass playing in Wooderpecker from Mars, you'll learn where Fiedly from Korn got a lot of his inspiration for example.

And Vin hears a WWI soldier going on and returning from leave. And I hear the aggression and bloodrush of the hunt,skill, bravery and violence; then the return to the tribe with your spoils, the adoration of the tribe,the women who crave the attentions of the strong provider; maybe a challenge for superiority from another in the tribe; and then... back out the next dawn to hunt again. Like I said though, and you allude to, is that the title has to have some bearing on the song meaning.

This is Cliff Burton's "Magnus Opus"... his One Big Goodbye. It includes parts written and recorded with Dave Mustaine. I will admit that I am not the biggest METALLICA fan. But ORION is far and away among my favorite songs. I can no longer imagine a world without this song. Even Classical Conductors have told me this song is worthy of Bach and Mozart. Without a word, the song conveys emotion and mental images evoked from within. Vin, brother. Sometimes we have to grow into an attention span. I know I did at times.

Yeah, the song your thinking of is "Leper Messiah". Mustaine claims that it was based on an early song of his.

I think one of the more important elements to enjoying and understanding metal music is to be ready to throw the lyrics out the window in some circumstances. Not that they don't matter, but in most bands the instrumentation is far more important in expressing the emotion of the song. Not to say that the lyrics cannot be profound and highly intellectual, but its more about the atmosphere that a song builds up. Anyways, you guys should really check out the song "Incarnated" by the band Obscura. I think it represents what I'm talking about perfectly. And I'd really love to hear your thoughts on the lyrics too, they read like a beautiful poem. Keep up the awesome reactions guys!

I honestly don't think they'd like "Wasted Years" But "Number of the Beast", that's right up Vin and Sori's alley. Bruce Dickinson's vocal range in it. The allusions describing witnessing satanic rites... Vin and Sori would have a field day with it !

I had tears streaming down my cheek on this one. RIP Cliff. I would love for you guys to do "To live is to Die", which is another Metallica instrumental. Sori, I'm hurt in my soul (not really but kind of...lol). I always have your back here but, my god, ... a 4 ?!?!?. Vin, well done my friend. You have honored and made proud the metal community, your family, and dare I say, Cliff Burton himself. Great video!

I love this song. I get the image of a hunter stalking their prey, deer or the like, and the prey grazing in a meadow, then the hunter creeping up on them, then as the tune builds, its like the chase, culminating in the kill and then a fail to black signifying the end of the hunt.
