This album, "...and Justice for All", is, to me, the pinnacle of Metallica, Every song on it is amazing both musically and lyrically. Pretty sure y'all have done "One" and "Blackened" but you still need "...and Justice for All", "Frayed Ends of Sanity", "The Shortest Straw" and "Eye of the Beholder"

Well it’s not difficult at all to predict that Lex would like this one but I had a feeling before I even clicked play that Brad would too. Besides the lyrics which are pretty much always great with any Metallica song I felt like the cadence of the rhythm and lead guitar would be about right for him. It’s a very heavy song but at the same time it has a slow pace and sort of mellowness to it. Brad doesn’t seem to care for that blistering fast stuff and it’s not that. Anyway, if you wanna take things in a little bit different direction I’d recommend a one hit wonder from the mid 90’s by the band Hum called “ Stars”.

the greatest thing about Lex's reactions is that she's NOT "listening" to the songs...she's FEELING them. She was saying on another reaction to (I think) Iron Maiden, explaining to Brad (and everyone else) how she doesn't hear the lyrics a lot of the time because she's so lost in the music. And she actually seemed a bit apologetic about it. I had to leave a comment to let her know she's doing it RIGHT. She couldn't be doing it MORE right. FEEL the music first. Especially with Metal. Go back later and read the lyrics if you have to.

You'll probably hear everyone arguing about the difference between old school Metallica and their new work. Their first four albums are arguably the best for fans of their hard and heavy thrash sound. Kill'em All. Ride the Lightning. Master of Puppets. And Justice for All. People who grew up listening to these albums were understandably disappointed with the turn that Metallica took toward mainstream approval with the release of the Black Album. There are obviously great songs in their newer work, but they seem to be the exception, whereas with their older work (pre black album) pretty much every track was considered gold. Of course, we're talking about people who grew up in the age where the only way you could even hear Metallica was if you owned their records or cassette tapes. When your options are limited, believe me... you wore them out. This was a time when you didn't buy an album for one track and listen to that one song over and over. You listened to side A then turned the tape over and listened to side B, flip and continue. Essentially, the entire album became a work of art unto itself.
@paranoidrodent
@paranoidrodent 2 жыл бұрын
(laughing) You just reminded me of my best friend and I (who were definitely in the "we like the first four albums" camp - big MoP and AJFA fans especially) eagerly awaiting the first play of Enter Sandman on our local equivalent to MTV. That opening soft guitar was good, the thumping drums followed by the matching grinding guitar had us grinning like giddy schoolgirls.... and then the radio-friendly hook (dun-dada-dundun, repeat ad nauseum) kicked in and our smiles were replaced with expressions of shock followed by sheer disgust. We literally turned to each other after maybe 10 seconds of that hook and simultaneously said "they sold out". This was a band that had never made a video before "One" and insisted on making that video a brilliant bit of art. Enter Sandman just killed Metallica for both of my buddy and I. Neither of us never bought another Metallica album after the first four. The band had pretty much died for us in that moment. I've never had my love of a band extinguish in a moment like that before or since. It was a weird moment. Admittedly, that song in particular and some of their later ones have grown on me over the years but honestly, it's been over 30 years and I still only have the old school stuff on my custom playlists (and my musical tastes are all over the place). I've seen them live once since the black album dropped and they put on a polished show but yeah, they felt super commercial to me (I found myself mostly just tolerating the newer stuff) and it was really the audience getting into the older stuff that made the show genuinely good for me. That being said, I'm mostly just indifferent and disinterested in their post-... and Justice material. Their only newer song that I absolutely hate is their version of Whiskey in the Jar. I kind of get what they were trying to do but I just can't stand what they produced (and I'm a metalhead who loves the original song - I've downed many a pint while singing it with the crowd in a pub).

One of my favorites on this album. Live show was 🔥 My first mosh pit. 😃 Wish I could find my shirt. Bought the same one Lars has on in the One video.

Brad doesn´t like instrumentals, that why they haven´t reacted to them yet. He is always analyzing the lyrics, he wants to find out the message. He can´t feel the music like Lex does.

I went about 15 years at least without listening to AJFA, I remembered the heaviness of it, but I listened to the entire album this past spring, and I had forgotten how rhythmic it was.. especially this song.

Hard to believe I was in high school when this came out. I remember a lot of people knocked it at the time and said it was their 4th best album and called them sell-outs for doing a music video (one). Over the years it has become my favorite, the entire albums brings it.

Brad likes this metal song because the way James delivers the vocals/lyrics reminds Brad of rap music? Oh boy..... I love how Lex just FEELS the music and appreciates everything about the song (not just the lyrics).

I have been listening to this album since it has came out. Always found the lyrics to be about someone stuck deep in addiction. Alcohol/drugs, Harvester being the drug of choice.

Metal has been playing in my ears since I was 5. This album was the Metallica album to grab me and suck me into metal (along with Megadeth Rust in Peace, and Testament, Slayer etc). So great to see it still dragging people in now. Lex, the metal is in your soul. Brad, you’ve got a good ear bro Next up may I suggest: Shortest Straw from AJFA Outlaw Torn from Load (live in Germany 2019 is an epic version) Keep rocking you two 🤘🏻🤘🏻

My favorite album from them and it's sound is original to that album, not to be created again on any other in my opinion. Love your takes on these songs and look forward to more. One day you will maybe react to one song I have requested, but I won't hold my breath. 🤣 Love you Lex and Brad!!!!

This was the album that got me into heavy metal. I bought it for "One" because that blew me away on MTV. Then the fucking album changed my brain from where my brain was then to where my brain was just after. But I've heard a lot of music since then.
