Been sitting on this one 18 years now. Deployed, Iraq, 2006, June, 29th. My team leader, Army, SGT Bryan Luckey was shot by a sniper. His memorial service, he picked this song for his eulogy. He was 25 at the time, I was a very young 22. Battalion commander protested our company using this song, but several of our NCOs fought that it was important it was used. In the end it was used. I remember watching the montage with this song, stoic, trying to minimize the loss we’ve just suffered. In hindsight, he picked this song as a warning, maybe an acceptance of our reality. Even if we aren’t disfigured, I daily feel as silenced as this guy not being able to talk about my war. Even before he died, he knew our curse. Now, I sit here at 40, thinking about some dumb 25yro sending a message to the future. We won’t learn, doing the same thing is way more fun.

@leadedbison1997
@leadedbison1997 4 жыл бұрын
@max damage nothing graphic is shown in the video, and the song and the movie are anti war anyway. So by that logic you want your kids to go to and support was. I know that's not what you're actually saying though. Children need to understand the reality of war and life. Life isn't a pretty picture. Having your kids grow up thinking everything is sunshine and roses will just fuck them up as adults when life starts happening to them. When I was a kid I saw these things, I saw people killed and dismembered. It didn't fuck me up in the head or anything. It made me face reality, make wiser choices to avoid those fates. I'll gladly show my kids a fucking Metallica video over the things I saw. Quit being ridiculous dude.

For those wondering, this music video uses excerpts from the movie "Johnny Got His Gun" Based on the book of the same name, the movie follows the story of Joe Bonham, a young man who was drafted into World War I. After being hit by an artillery shell, his face, legs, and arms were blown off. He can still think, reason, dream, and feel, but he can't speak, hear, see, or move. He has no idea where he is, when he is, or how long he's been like that. Imagine being trapped in your own body, with almost no way to interact with the outside world. Imagine being a prisoner, locked inside of your own mind. A minute in our world feels like a year to him. That's the horror he's experiencing.

Metallica was my gateway band into heavy music. One especially was the song that made me fall in love with it. if it wasn't for my brother and his best friend, a friend whom i have always considered family, he is every bit my brother as my actual brother. i wouldn't have gotten into Metallica and metal in general like i was. that friend passed away from cancer yesterday at the age of 38. i am gonna miss him, and i am going to think about him every time i listen to Metallica, especially this song.

This song, in this cut and video, is in my opinion the best thing Metallica has done. I just celebrated my 20th year of service in the army. Tours in Iraq 2005-06, 2007-08, 2011 and 2021. I cannot even begin to explain how much this hits home. For like 10+ years now it seems I have always thought that if there were to ever be a movie about my life, the intro to this song is the intro to my movie and the rest throughout. "He is a product of your profession, not mine" and goes into the guitar rifts. Keep that grind going strong until there is no more to give!

In 1989 Metallica released the song 'One' and used clips from the 'Johnny Got His Gun' a 1971 American drama film written and directed by Dalton Trumbo based on his 1939 novel of the same name. Joe Bonham, a young American soldier hit by an artillery shell during World War I, lies in a hospital bed. He is a quadruple amputee who has also lost his eyes, ears, mouth and nose. He remains conscious and able to reason, but his wounds render him a prisoner in his own body. As he drifts between reality and fantasy, he remembers his old life with his family and girlfriend. He also forms a bond of sorts with a young nurse who senses his plight. Eventually, Joe tries to communicate with his doctors via Morse code by tapping his head, saying "help". He wishes for the Army to put him in a glass coffin in a freak show as a demonstration of the horrors of war. When told that his wish may be impossible to grant, he responds begging to be euthanized, repeatedly saying "kill me". He ultimately realizes that the Army cannot grant either wish, and will leave him in a state of living death. His sympathetic nurse attempts to euthanize him by clamping his breathing tube, but her supervisor stops her before Joe can succumb. Joe realizes that he will never be released from his state of entrapment and he is left alone, weakly chanting, "S.O.S. Help me."

When I was young, I wanted nothing more than to be an Air Force officer, and they wanted me badly. My test scores were incredible in everything they wanted, but in the end, I let my family's wishes keep me from doing it. One thing I'll never forget though, is talking to an active duty Green Beret Captain, who had served in Vietnam. And he told me about two such young men as this coming back from. I think, WW2. (My father was a veteran of WW2 and Korea). One solace of not being an Air Force officer i still have is that no boys were or ever will face such horror because of any decisions of mine.

This song especially fascinates me. It starts off calmly, like hope fading. Then there is an upswing that comes with fear and anger. But it ends with the silence that comes with death. It’s so good. One is one of the few metal pieces that you can listen to when you are happy or sad. A multifunctional masterpiece.

My dad had some of his brains blown out in Vietnam and a metal plate in his head. Mom left when I was 10, she was a nurse. I used to listen to him cry regularly about all the men he saw slaughtered and having to pick up their body parts weeping because he didn’t know whose finger, whose arm, whose brain pieces to put in which bag to send home to the families. He cried ALL THE TIME He was drafted at 19 years old and paying his own way through college. I love this song and it helps because there are not a lot of people to talk to and they really don’t care.

@@steelbunyea Americans definitely give a shit about children and women. Soldiers who have raped have been broadcasted through the news and made to feel small AND IMPRISONED. I haven't heard of an instance where a child was killed without a soldier mourning the dead, it's tragic to soldiers and Americans back home. Every American frowns upon child cannon fodder that the middle east enjoys sending at us in the name of their fake god. If you want to laugh and call the Christian god fake, at least our god doesn't send children to fight our battles.

Saving Private Ryan is not an anti-war film. It's not about the atrocities of war but about the triumph of defeating Nazis. At the end, the heroes won. At the end, all the battle was worth it, so it isn't about the atrocities of war.

The youngins don't remember this but this was officially the 1st Metallica video on MTV. It debuted in a slot normally reserved for the Glam Metal scene and Metallica until then was making waves by word-of-mouth. Really was the only band in history at that time to go double Platinum without any radio airplay. Then this song debuts on MTV and it blew everyone away. After it debuted, Metallica was no longer an underground band.

I was just graduating HS when this video came out. I used to watch Head Bangers Ball on MTV. I'd record it every week just in case I missed it live. I had the biggest crush on Jason, especially after seeing this video. I was lucky that I got to see Cliff play right before he died. Remember when concert tickets were only like $20 back then? I miss those days!! Metallica will ALWAYS be my favorite band FOREVER! The best concert was NYE 1999 at the Silverdome in MI. That was NYE Y2K when people thought our world would crash. The only thing that crashed that night was the fact they stopped selling beer at I believe 10p. Pissed a lot of people off. LOL. It also took us 3 hours to get back to our hotel because there was only 2 taxis and there were so many people needing a ride. We had to sit out in the cold waiting. THAT was BS but so worth it that we rang the new year in with Metallica!

This song especially fascinates me. It starts off calmly. Like hope fading. Then there is an upswing that comes with hatred and anger. But it ends with the silence that comes last with death. It is so good that it is one of the few metal pieces that you can listen to when you are happy or sad.

@@kevinvowles6052 the song is about a war vet who gets horribly injured. He legs and arms are blown off, he can't speak, hear, see, smell, nothing.
