How JUDAS PRIEST chose RICHIE FAULKNER as their GUITARIST when KK left

It's been more than 10 years since Richie Faulkner joined Judas Priest as one of the lead guitarists after KK Downing left the Heavy Metal band he once co-formed. And as with any line up change for a band of such status as Judas Priest has, the fan base's reaction to it has been rather mixed. Yet no matter to which camp you personally belong, the fact remains: for more than 10 years the Falcon has been rocking the stage together Metal Gods after his first official live appearance with Judas Priest on American Idol finale with James Durbin!
This episode is (hopefully) the first one in the Defenders of the Faith Series being dedicated to an individual band member rather than a studio album. And may even be the first one on Richie Faulkner alone, exploring only who Richie was BEFORE joining Judas Priest and how he came to be the guitarist of one of the greatest Heavy Metal bands of all times!
Judas Priest Line Up as of 2021:
Rob Halford - vocals
Richie Faulkner - guitar
Glenn Tipton - guitars
Ian Hill - bass guitar
Scott Travis - drums
Judas Priest albums released with Richie Faulkner:
1. Redeemer of Souls
2. Firepower
All songs on those album are co-written by Richie Faulkner, Glenn Tipton and Rob Halford.

I love Richie Faulkner. He is filling huge shoes incredibly well, especially as he also had to lighten the load on Glenn Tipton. And while doing all of this he also manages to have influence on the writing and it's like a breath of fresh air because he's from a newer generation of guitarists. I've seen Richie live twice as part of Judas Priest and he fits right in. He also eases the load on Rob's shoulders by doing a lot of crowd interaction, allowing Rob to have a few more breaks. And while I like KK's playing a bit more I still love Richie's. You can hear influence from Michael Schenker over Randy Rhoads to Zakk Wylde and his riffing is damn mean. And he plays with great taste and phrasing. I don't like that KK left. I don't like that Glenn isn't able to trade solos anymore and keeps in the background mostly. But those are facts of life and nothing of that has to do anything with Richie, he's just doing the impossible task he was given and he's doing it very well.

I agree Richie does a phenomenal job. But personally for me without either KK or Glen on stage it just is not JP. Anyone can play JP songs but without the interaction of those (dare I say contending) personalities on stage it just doesnt do it for me. I felt a bit sad seeying Richie play his heart out (playing both KK's as Glen's leads) and trying to lift the rest of the bands performance.(Made me wish KK was there dualing with Richie) Liked Fire Power as the songs are good and Rob's vocals shine but didn't love it as something seemed missing (KK's and even Glen's lead interplay..tbh Glen is almost non-existant on the record). Still eager to hear a new JP album, and already really love KK's Priest, but no more JP concerts for me.

It's my belief that Priest was very fortunate to bring Richie aboard. In interviews and live he gives the impression of being a real mensch. Humble in his talent, respectful of the members and the history of JP and their fans. finally he is a good fit for their song writing style as evidenced on Firepower.

After new events came to light, its pretty clear why they wanted to have him. Because he is badass enough to still shred through Painkiller even with a ruptured aorta. Like, he was still doing stage moves and singing with the song and doing crowdwork while legitimately dying. Im so glad he lives to rock another day, but if he hadnt already, he cemented himself into metal royalty through sheer badassness.

I'll start with a big THANK YOU, thanks Pilgrim for pointing out that it's 10 years already Faulkner joined JP. Bands players come and go all the time, we may like the new arrivals or not. It's just fair to feel affectionate to players we follow for years, but it's written nowhere that a band has to stop if the members are not founders. And when it's about JP, my thought is, what they did is so important that their music has become greater than the band itself. I hope they'll go on forever if the quality of their work will remain this high. What's wrong in younger players taking their heritage and carryin' on? Especially when they have been chosen by members who may not be founders, but played in the band for so many years. I knew and liked JP before, but I really started to appreciate them in the last years (I know, I'm always late), so I'm a Richie-Faulken-era fan. If I have to choose a song, I'd say "You've got another thing comin". The first time I saw that interminable guitar solo my jaw dropped. What RF did in this 10 years is undeniable, not just about playing and composing, but refreshing JP image, what he does on the socials, all his livestreams and tutorial. He has become a link between the band and the people. Probably I'm not able to separate between the human qualities and the music, but shouldn't this be what makes a musician great? By the way, this is just the point of view of an employee who discovered metal late in life and whose musical knoledge is "I like this, I don't like that". But thanks to people like the Falcon I feel like learning more and understanding more.

My personal favorite from Richie's era so far would have to be Halls Of Valhalla. It's one of the ones that Richie wrote as well. That song was typical of Priest to reach out into new terrritory for the band. Their first song about vikings and the first time for death metal growls on a Priest album by Halford. I thought it was so awesome when he did that!

As I have heard, Faulkner came in one week to fill in for a "house guitarist" of a club called Monarch in Camden Town, because the house guitarist named Emir Hot had to call in sick that day or something. On that day, when Faulkner filled in, Halford came to the club and was stunned by his playing. Emir told me this story, look him up on KZfaq and listen to his sevdah metal album, he also has an uncanny resemblance of Faulkner too. Amazing guitarist, amazing person!

Lineup changes happen. In my mind the thing that counts the most about "legitimacy" is the music... and the last two albums have kicked my ass, so that's pretty "legitimate" to me. Best song? A lot to choose from ... I'm going to pick one from each album: "Lightning Strike", and "Halls of Valhalla". Meanwhile, KK has a new album coming out with Ripper Owens, and that sounds interesting too. It's the era of two Priests. If only we could get them all to get along and deliver a big mega-show with all of those guys together

I don't understand why is so hard for this band to get all over this drama. They should look to Helloween, because they found a way to solve the conflicts and start all over. As enticing as that sounds I don't think we'll ever see a Priest lineup with KK and Glenn, or maybe we will but only for a short time. It's not that I don't think that they can put their differences aside, I just think that it will take a few years (especially now that there's KK's Priest) and a few more years down the line means Glenn's Parkinson worsening so I guess we'd see him retiring. Or maybe that'd be the trigger that makes KK come back, which sounds like a plausible scenario to me. In that case I think it's more likely that we'll see Priest with KK and Richie than it is that we see one with three guitarists. I personally would prefer your outcome but I think the above is more likely

Your analysis that the Amercan Idol performance (may 25th 2011) cemented JP deciding to continue instead of retirering isnt right. April 20th they already announced Ritchie as a replacement and that a new album was coming. Funny thing is that they only met for the first time with Ritchie that same month (April) according to Robs Book. Seems likely that JP already decided to continue before they found Ritchie.

That's not exactly what I meant. I took this from Confess, where Rob says that during "one of the shows" the band realized that they want to continue. I'd like to throw in my two cents. When I saw Richie 3-4 times on his first tour with priest ten years ago, I didn't like him at all.... Only because he did NOT play any of KK's solos at all. He improvised all of it. I am almost more confused now knowing he had a lot of time to work out those solos. But after a couple years, it was when I saw him play the solo to the Sentinel and The Sinner (my two favorite priest songs), that my opinion changed quickly. I think that the better decision was made and I'm happy for both parties. NOW, we get to see priest, and we get to see KK's priest, along with ripper ( and those of us who got to see les Binks drumming for him). Ps. Who else freaked out when les Binks played HELL IS HOME!?

Richie kinda of more of comedian compared to the seriousness off kk and glen. He can play has a better rhythm sound live then kk did. i dont know if its the guitar are different amp his using. But its hard to beat kk and glen they might be the best duo guitarist of all time at any level of music. watched them play one night in the 90s withe ripper owen at small club and then and went and watched metallica on black tour 2 nites later. IT was no comparison of talent between kk and glen compared to james and pentanoic lead guitar solo man forgot his name. kk and glen kicked there ass bad!!!

For me Redeemer Of Souls would fit nicely between Screaming For Vengeance and Defenders Of The Faith. With the Deluxe Edition it is a phenomenal screaming molten Heavy Metal album one of their best IMHO. Crossfire and Snake Bit are the Hellion/Metallion on that album and should be in every set from now to eternity.

KK isn't a founding member.
@MetalPilgrim

Well... yes. Technically he isn't... or he is. It's a rather complicated matter, given that the first Judas Priest with Atkins, Chataway, Stapenhil and Partridge technically broke up. And then Atkins joined KK and Ian in Freight which they then renamed as Judas Priest after Atkins' first band. So if we count that first one as the starting point - then yes, if we are being technical, KK isn't a founding member. But if count Freight (which was later renamed) as the starting point... and I actually think this would be more precise, then KK and Ian are co-founders. Which brings me to a question... should we make an episode on the very early (1969-1970) Judas Priest history?

@@MetalPilgrim Agreed. But shit happens in bands along a timeline. I've been in bands and they are pretty clear when you are involved. Everyone in the band knows who did what and started what or whatever...at least in my experience. In my bands we all knew who came up with whatever idea there was...a lyric...a graphic idea....a drum part. KK didn't start the band. He didn't name it. He wasn't there when the sperm entered the egg. He showed up after the birth.

@@EffectivePhysioKingaroy I disagree. I like Faulkner mind you and think he is great on stage. But he doesnt sound like KK. And of the whole band KK wast the most energetic as well. If KK and KK woudl play together in JP it would rock as hell. Now Faulker has to lift up the whole band which just doesnt soundor look the same to me.
