Put your Relay Here | FJC Light Bar install

When installing aftermarket lights on your vehicle it is important to place your Relay in the proper position. You want it to reach the battery but also stay clear of your vehicles crush zone points. Just not an area you want to mess it...You can often tell where the crush zone points are by the presence of dimples under your hood. This specific install was filmed on a FJ Cruiser but is similar for other vehicles as well.

so do a simple 30amp fuse wired between the batter and the switch, i run 3 wires that’s all i need

No relay = HD switch needed, usually kind of bulky, but sure, it works ok as long as your wire gauge used to run to the switch can handle the AMP load of the light on the other end and the added load (resistance) of a longer run for the circuit. Relays allow keeping the high AMP load closer to the area that actually needs it, battery to light. vs. battery/inside cab to HD switch/out to light. Just ensure a proper fuse is on that run; that's about 2x the exposure of high AMP load wiring, and it goes into the cab.

I installed a keyed relay to the switch, now the light bar only works when the key is turned on (no dead battery)

Yes you can. Just pull wiring of the amount of circuits you want to install at the same time. Way easier to wire for 2 or 3 when you do the first one.

I want to wire my pod lights to my stock harness is that ok?

To the OEM Toyota fog light circuit, yes, most pod lights will not have too high of an amp draw for that.

I installed my light bar like that and screwed my relay on a random bolt, still drains my brand new battery

The grounded relay would not be the culprit of draining your battery. You have a short upstream of your ground; it could be the switch if it lights up and stays on all the time or many other things. The easiest way to find a short is with a multimeter; they are not expensive these days. Put the meter between each 12v lead in your circuit with the switch off and look for what is causing a short. Shorts are a PITA and takes patience to track them down, but when you do it's a solid win for your skills!

Nice so the self tappers ground the relay?

Yes it can, however not shown in the video we backed the self tapper out and dabbed some finger nail polish paint to seal the steel. The ground for the Relay in these OPOR harness is a dedicated large ring terminal. Easy to install just about anywhere there is a good bolted ground.
