What's a Yarl? Think the 90's. Think Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains. That deep "YEAAAH" singing that's so fun to imitate. But also think Metallica, Exhorder, and Pantera. There are many types of yarls, and we're ranking the best and worst ones in this tier list.
00:00 Intro
00:18 Eddie Vedder - Pearl Jam
01:27 Kyle Thomas - Exhorder
02:26 Phil Anselmo - Pantera
03:08 Travis Meeks - Days Of The New
03:54 Hugo Ferreira - Tantric
04:42 Scott Weiland - STP
05:38 Robb Flynn - Machine Head
06:30 Niklas Karlsson - Orbit Culture
07:32 James Hetfield - Metallica
08:26 Brad Arnold - 3 Doors Down
09:32 Scott Stapp - Creed
10:41 Jason Wade - Lifehouse
11:35 Sully Erna - Godsmack
12:45 Matt Heafy - Trivium
13:45 Layne Staley - Alice In Chains

I love the respect for Scott Weiland. I was fortunate enough to see Stone Temple Pilots the last time they came to salt lake City with the original lineup and unfortunately that was the last time that would ever happen. I've always thought STP was incredibly underrated. I do think you're a bit too harsh on Orbit Culture's lead singer. I actually do like his yarl. They kind of remind me of a mix between Fear Factory and Metallica in a weird way. And that joke about Wes Scantlin and Kurt Cobain was gold.

I never bought into the stp hate. It was the Critics and gatekeepers who decided they were derivative. But if theyd actually listened to their music and played guitar or an instrument they’d of known that they were quite different and used a lot of jazzy chords etc. perhaps you can say Scott on Core was “of the time” but by the second album he was coming into his own. I saw them on their tiny music tour and they were great.

You putting Scott Stapp at A tier made me very happy. My love of Creed is a hill I'm willing to die on. Machine Head and Trivium are both in my top 10 favorite bands (along with Metallica), but I can understand where you’re coming from with Robb and Matt's yarls, even if I do personally like them.

Layne Staley was the man! It’s tragic the way he went out of this world. R.I.P. I’m surprised to see Tantric and Days of the New here as I wasn’t aware of those bands when thinking of this list. Both got some solid material, especially Travis Meeks. Sucks how addiction got to him. He had potential.

Sully for me falls more into the Hetfield style of "Yarling" than the Vedder style, Especially on those first four Godsmack albums. His vocals on the later albums may not be as fun as say Scott Stapp but I'd say that he's a much better singer overall, Dude can sustain some pretty crazy notes. Also, I get why he was left off but Wes Scantlin was definitely a "Yarler" in those first two Puddle Of Mudd albums, His vocal style was an amalgamation of every early grunge act (Since P.O.M formed in 1993) and it can especially be heard on songs like Drift And Die. Ranking wise I'd probably place him in C since his vocals fizzled out after 2007, But in his heyday he could sustain some notes and write super infectious choruses. (Not to mention his iconic nasal singing that's super fun to imitate) They aren't on here but I don't think you could get any worse than Austin Winkler from Hinder and Tyler Connolly from Theory, Pure garbage vocalists. My Ranking Would Be Something Like: S Tier - Layne Staley, James Hetfield A Tier - Eddie Vedder, Scott Weiland, Chester Bennington (Grey Daze Era), Brent Smith, Phil Anselmo B Tier - Aaron Lewis, Sully Erna, Shaun Morgan, Travis Meeks, Scott Stapp, Chris Daughtry, Jason Wade, Wes Scantlin (2001-2007 Era), Gavin Rossdale C Tier - Scott Anderson, Brad Arnold, Chad Kroeger, Ed Sloan, Dallas Smith, Josh Todd D Tier - Michael Poulsen, Chris Taylor Brown F Tier - Wes Scantlin (2010 Onwards), Tyler Connolly, Austin Winkler

The Yarl is actually my favourite vocal style. I love the bluesy tone to the vocals. Layne Staley, Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell were the best to do it. Underneath them you’ve got Scott Weiland Ben McMillan (from Gruntruck and Skin Yard) Travis Meeks (from Days Of The New, and amazing vocalist btw) Shaun Morgan (from Seether) Hugo Ferreira (from Tantric, he has a very deep twangy Yarl, also holy shit I didn’t know Tantric went through so many lineup changes) Myles Kennedy (from Alter Bridge, also he looks a bit like Kevin Bacon but with long hair) Underneath them you’ve got Brent Smith (from Shinedown) Sully Erna (from Godsmack) Scooter Ward (from Cold) Raine Maida (from Our Lady Peace, not sure where to put him really because he’s part Yarl and part Falsetto, he’s Eddie Vedder mixed in with a male version of Alanis Morissette, I mean both Raine and Alanis are Canadian so, but he’s got those Yarly type Vedder isms but also a lot of those Ahy, Ahy, Ahy type Alanis vocals, whatever that is) Daniel Johns (of Silverchair, he was still in his mid teens when Silverchair started, crazy) Underneath them you’ve got Chester Bennington (yes he’s a Yarler, one of the very few non Grunge/Post Grunge Yarlers, RIP, but wasn’t really a fan tbh, no disrespect to him I just didn’t like Linkin Park) Scott Stapp (yeah he’s the one that everyone makes fun of but he is a good vocalist) Justin Holman (of Revis, underrated band that only had 1 album in 2003, a really good album by the way) Brett Scallions (of Fuel) And Underneath them you’ve got (these bands are over hated imo there not that bad, it’s just they are Meh) Brad Arnold (from 3 Doors Down) Wes Scantlin (Puddle Of Mudd, tbh most people now only know him from the About A Girl memes now, he’s a decent vocalist but that About A Girl thing was bad) Chad Kroeger (Nickelback, probably one of the worst to do it, but they are over hated it’s just they are funny to meme to). That’s all I can do because I would literally be here all fucking day, because the amount of vocalists who did the Yarl when the Post Grunge/Burt Rock bands were kicking off was insane the amount of Yarlling going on. Though it is my favourite vocal style. Also Kurt Cobain often gets lumped in with the Yarl vocal style but he wasn’t a Yarler, his vocal style was more of a Vocal Fry, kinda croaky vocal sound, which is more common with women vocalists, which is ironic or stands out considering Kurt was a strong feminist. When it comes to Kurt’s style of voice and vocals, Kat Bjelland (from Babes In Toyland) has more in common with Kurt’s Vocal Fry style of vocals as it’s more common with female vocalists than men.

Kurt yodeled with his vocals. Listen to some his demos or live vocals. He can make his vocals go up and down like yodeling. Then add the vocal fry you have Kurt's voice.

I think Scooter Ward should have been here in some capacity. The first Cold album sounds like a parody of yarlers. I have a love -hate relationship with that album because I think it's actually pretty good and Insane probably has the most egregious yarl I've ever heard, but the song is so haunting and creepy good. Also. The first Creed album is definitely sleept on. Torn is an awesome song and My Own Prison has this guitar tone and kick drum sound that sounds more like a thrash band or, dare I say, Pantera-esque sound?

I’ve always been a bit more of an enjoyer of the yarl. Not to say it can’t be overdone, but I personally think it has this almost raunchy feel to it that when used tastefully, can be absolutely incredible. I mean Dax Riggs during the Acid Bath days nearly had a yarl and he sounded awesome. And also yes Layne is the yarl king. RIP 1967-2002

Dax rigs of acid bath second only to Staley or maybe Chris Cornell and I have been a heavy metal fan since the late 80s and all kinds of thrash death metal grind core and yes, some music with good clean singing agree with you on Lane Staley and Scott Whelan Eddie Vedder does not even come close. Chris Cornell should’ve been on here as well as Dax Riggs.

I kind of keep a list of my favorite singers and it changes a lot based on what i'm listening. But layne has always been the top 1. He's the best. People always reminds him because of man in the box and other powerful vocals, but the man was pretty versatile. His work in mad season was incredible. I've never seen a vocalist being able to deliver powerful angry notes and also such soothing painful melodies. Chris cornell was the only one that came close (also god tier). Scott Weiland is pretty underrated in my opinion. He didn't have the crazy impressive vocals that others did, but he did just what the song asked for. In my opinion, this is more important than high notes and shit. Good list. Wish i had seen Cornel on it. Cheers from Brazil!

Being a huge Orbit Culture fan (I consider the Redfog/Nija/Shaman trilogy to be absolute masterpieces), I'll leave my 2 cents. Is Niklas a perfect vocalist? Hell no. What he does have is passion. Both in his harsh and clean vocals. What I'll partially agree with you in is that especially on his clean vocals, he lets his influences show. Namely, Hetfield. But if you listen to songs like Behold, where he lets himself express a more original approach, he's good. He's more than good. I personally believe that in time, he'll develop a more personal style that fits his voice. And his harsh vocals are perfect as they are. As he is the one that mixes and produces their songs, at least he didn't autotune everything ( *cough* Evergrey *cough*). I think that deserves some praise too. Huge respect for your honest opinions

As an Aussie, I'd love to hear you (and your viewers) thoughts on our hometown Yarler (lol - "yarling" is a new term for me! 😂 And i may be wrong thinking that this is a "yarler"...👉), Daniel Johns, of Silverchair. If you think Tomorrow, and Pure Massacre, theur first two singles...they were unabashedly "Seattle Sound Yarlers"! But, you gotta remember...they were 15 years old ! He yarled for the next few albums, but steadily matured in to his own sound, too.... and by Diorama, he peaked, in my opinion... → with Greatest View → Without You → Across the Night (Smashing Pumpkins, Mellon chollie esque..) → Tuna in the Brine (personal fave) → and Luv Your Life P S. Another 2 underrated bands outside of the Seattle/US Yarl hub worth a look, are ... • Powderfinger (another Aussie act. More mature & sophisticated than Silverchair), • And Reef, from the UK. These guys are unique, and totally rockin'. All bangers...

Layne Staley was the OG yarler. Vedder and Stapp may have made it mainstream but Layne did it before EVERYONE. I love bands like Days of the New, Tantric and Creed but I always wondered if he would have been more recognized for how unique his vocals were if yarling wasn't such a common technique

I'm not gonna hate on Godsmack. Godsmack was one of the gateway bands that got me not only into Rock and Metal but music in general. I understand why people don't like them and they are valid points too. No matter, I'll keep blasting Facelsess from my car with a smile on my face, thinking of the person who got me listening to them in the first place, my mom.

Layne wasn’t trying to yarl. If you ever heard him talk, it was just how his voice was. He had a slight twang. He was the first and it wasn’t overdone. That came a little later when others starting doing it. When Layne appeared on the scene it was “fresh and new.” He will always be the yarlgoat.

Yellow Ledbetter is one of the best songs to come out of that decade. I don't care how over the top the vocals are it doesn't really matter what it's about. The "music" part of it is phenomenal. Also something i don't think many are aware of but the "yarl" can be heard on old country songs like"He Stopped Loving Her Today" by the Possum himself. It's in a number of "Outlaw" country artist's songs, David Allan Coe is another one. I'm sure it probably goes back father than that but that's where the trail goes cold for me. If anyone knows of anything older than that let me know.
