Are you as excited for Metaphor:ReFantazio as I am?

I think this game has a lot of potential. Seeing some friends that only play Xbox and don't really play JRPGs that much go like "That game low-key looks sick" is a good sign

You make a great point about turn-based RPGs. Final Fantasy games used to be an automatic pre-order for me, but they stopped feeling like FF games for awhile. They now get lost with the glut of action RPGs. Its easy to wait for a discount disc or code later on. Atlus games have taken that place for me because of the style and gameplay that FF lost on both accounts.

You hit the nail on the head with the comments about turn-based combat. Final Fantasy becoming full action is going to leave a huge vacuum for a big turn-based fantasy RPG. Metaphor Re Fantazio is in the perfect position to fill that vacuum and become a big deal to the wider gaming public. Arguably Dragon Quest could fill this space, but my impression of DQ is that it's more of a comfy RPG than an epic one. But I'd be interested in hearing what Dragon Quest fans think since I don't know much about it.

I think you nailed it - I agree with pretty much all the points you made. One note on the turn-based front, is that everything you said is true… for JRPGs (unless we include the monster-catching Pokémon). In terms of western turn-based RPGs, Baldur’s Gate 3 just released and is already the highest performing turn-based RPG on Steam (well along the way to approaching Elden Ring numbers) with the PS5 release coming out later this year. That will also be good for Metaphor Re Fantazio because (other than a possibly delayed Xbox release) Baldur’s Gate 3 will be spaced far away from Fantazio, making it easier to get coverage (especially with BG3 helping the media to take turn-based seriously) and with more players able to afford it.

Just in case I didn't hear it get mentioned, I'm pretty sure one of the reasons this game is going to end up being a big deal is becuase the team had commented on it being a brand new pillar that they had painstakenly crafted to stand alongside SMT and Persona. Whilst those 2 games are taking place in modern and post-apocalyptic versions of the real world, Project ReFantasy was supposed to take the same cues from their mainline franchise and have it evolve and take place in a fantasy world, akin to Etrian Odyssey or perhaps even Stella Deus. If they pull it off well, they will likely continue making games using the Metaphor/ReFantazio brand name with the hope that they essentially have a third major sales pillar.

I am very hyped for Metaphor Re Fantazio. I was unbelievably excited when it dropped in the showcase (i am so glad it wasnt leaked beforehand). I am a bit concerned with some of the persona elements with bonds and the calendar but I hope that the bonds relates to you forging alliances in order to become king and that the calendar is more loose (it seems to emphasise the day a lot, so I am hopeful that maybe its just related to certain events happening on certain days rather than being strict like persona). If it is too similar to persona in gameplay structure Ibwill be disappointed as its being sold as a new IP and it would instead just feel like a persona spin off or something.

I don’t really understand the complaints about metaphor looking persona adjacent. Hashino, meguro and soejima are the fathers of modern atlus, it was always gonna be similar to persona in some ways, now we just need to wait to see how different it will be and it obviously will be considering the setting. Super excited.

Im definitely looking forward to this. I dont think it being similar to persona/smt is a bad thing. It gives it a sense of familiarity but allows them to take a concept they are already familiar with and make it something new. Its know doubt gonna release way after p3re so refantazio doesnt clash with it

I think when Nintendo announced switch 2, I hope Soul Hacker 2 and Persona 3 Reload will be released for the new console. I’m hoping Refanazio will come to the switch too!🎉😂

The social links seem evident in what we've seen, it looks like an eight step process of converting people in your motive to be an, "influencer," in order to ascend the throne; something of an empyrean in SMTV, but is also the pivotal point that we see (or lack thereof(being the first entry(and here's to hoping it's going to be as abstract as an NGE ending))) a transitory point conjoining the game content as a reflection of the IRL. There are many similarities to Persona, and good ones that resemble a skeletal isomorphism. This is very much going to be the same game but drastically different in tone and content. I can only imagine after a decade of making three of the greatest games, that high school content is getting beneath them. This team has proved what they're capable of, and they surely don't want to be trapped in a corner of box. They have been given free reign, let's see what comes!

People can roll their eyes at the Persona comparison all they want, but the similarities are undeniable. I'm sure some Atlus fans will try to list of every little difference possible, but you could do that between any 2 Persona games as well. Obviously, it's not a Persona game for a reason though, so I'm excited to see what they have a store & what major differences the game will bring.

Metaphor is really hype I was honestly shocked when they revealed that it was so funny. 😂 everyone thought it was just persona 3 reload and tactica so it was a very nice surprise. I am a huge fan of Jrpgs regardless so I’ll check it out. I am also a big fan of Shignori Soejima’s art and I’m glad he’s still doing art I know for sure that the art will 100% will carry the game. Also I don’t like your take on ff16 but I will let that slide. 😅 I really enjoyed that game. I even like rpgs and I thought the game mechanics were fine. 2023 will for sure be the year for rpgs! Ff7 rebirth. Persona 3 reload. And now Metaphor. It’s going to be awesome!

I mean, its confirmed to have social links [bonds] and the party is made of npc characters, not demons. So yeah, it IS already closer to Persona than SMT. Medieval Persona is a perfectly understandable comparison. Megaten community has to get past this baggage that the majority of the gaming industry knows Atlus from Persona, not SMT. Its just reality. Not automatic disrespect or something to get salty about

I'm defintely interested in this game and its good it gets the VIP treatment dev wise, considering we still have't seen or heard anything regarding P6 news this game has some big shoes to fill. I also don't think this game will have any trouble selling considering how rock solid Atlus's PR usually is when a game release approaches.

Ff16 did bad because it was kindve boring looking imo. Ff15 had the biggest or one of the biggest launches in the series and it wasn’t turn based. Ff ain’t really been turn based in a good while

I think Metaphor looks amazing and has the potential to be successful... Just not in Japan. It is physically impossible for it to do well there at this point as the market is 90% Switch and PS software sales are anaemic. Just look at this week's Famitsu chart, not a single PS game could crack the top 10 and the bar was only 4,800. I think even if Metaphor was to release today it would sell Soul Hackers 2 levels in Japan... As for WW I'm not sure. I think the game looks great but I'm not sure that it has the mass appeal that Persona does. I think the art direction is great, I would describe it more as steampunk than medieval, but I think it's that odd mix of new and old that might put people off. The music I'm sure will be great and I also love Meguro's work but from what little they played for us it's not jazz, and that's basically what people liked about Persona 5's music. Upbeat jazz they could sing along to. So it may not ring a chord with the masses as it does with us. That's just my thoughts. I hope the games does well but it probably won't be a breakout hit.

Cmon now, ff sixteen is NOT remotely like god of war reboot lol. GOW has a god awful camera system that really holds back it’s game.

It looks extremely promising. However, I’m not buying new hardware just to play this. If it ever comes to the next Switch, I’ll be buying ASAP.

Honestly I was more hyped for P3 Reload when everything was announced but now after knowing that Reload will not be the definitive version of P3 I'm leaning towards Metaphor:ReFantazio, still buying both games though

I’m definitely in the camp of it looks too much like Persona, mechanically. Waiting for more information and even if it does end up having a ton of Persona in it I’ll just be happy that it’s not High School and I’m not fighting the same enemy models again. Looking forward to it and hearing more about it.

Any chance the unannounced game atlus will release this year is actually SMT V for Xbox and PS5 ?

Although I still prefer the persona series as I like the real life setting more while also telling stories and themes happening IRL, But I’m willing to give myself a chance to play this game and hopefully it becomes the “final fantasy” of Altus because final fantasy has become more action oriented where as I still love turn based rpgs and Glad Altus is now the big company continuing the legacy!

Well personally I’m really sad about it :( why ? Because the name says nothing for many people, Xbox was always more of a shooter console, then a name and new universe that no one knows about and we have the problem, I don’t think that it will sell well enough in Europe or America and that could be rough for its future

i play atlus for 2 big reasons. i love the stories. and its TURN BASED!!. i hate this going to action garbage.. its not a real rpg.

The only JRPG I've liked was Radiant Historia on the 3DS (and more recently the Octopath 2 demo). I never played them as a kid and have tried many over the years. Including Persona 5; I couldnt really get into, i think partly due to the high school and i found the social sim aspects boring. But when Metaphor: ReFantazio was announced the trailer and art style looks incredible and I'm much more about the fantasy setting! Looking forward to this one!

I agree with you about it being a great thing its going to be Turn Based. Turn based RPGs are my favorite. I even heard rumors that Dragon Quest 12 might be going Action RPG and it really makes me kinda upset. I think they should leave some classic franchises turn based. They dont have to make EVERYTHING action RPG.

I have to figure out what I'm going to play it on. It's only coming out for PS5, Xbox series X/S, and PC. I like physical copies but I don't own any of the new consoles except Switch.

With the success of BG3 a lot of gamer's that had not given turn-based combat a chance will only help this game sell better and as long as it has rpg element's and we know anything from Atlus will have ,i think this game has a very good chance of doing very good.

Most atlus games threads similar grounds, they basically vary on setting and turn based / tactics gameplay. Now that atlus is pushing the p5 UI to all their games I feel like this is yet another thing that will come to define all of their games. This is all I got from the trailer of Metaphor. The quality of the setting, characters and story will probably be something we will only know once the game is released.

Too be honest, I have no real interest in this game....not sure if it is because of the long wait, no female main character(like I thought it would), looks like fantasy Persona, name change, or the fact it was announced during the SMT 30th anniversary.

I think as long as the game has better pacing than persona 5 then yes it will likely do really well. As long as their big writers are on the job i don’t have worries there, it’s whoever they’ve been putting on soul hackers 2 and smt5 that i havehave worries about because both of those games stories are just awful honestly.

FF16 being action isn't the reason it preformed like it did. It's because it was ps5 exclusive in a country where Playstation is losing its audience. FF15 and FF7R both did well there and they are action. People do not want to buy ps5s. So you make the game for switch or cross gen to get more,sales in Japan. Metaphor will probably do well bc of the names on it and it being available on ps4. Not just because it's turn based, even tho that will be a reason bc of how good atlus turn based is.
