This week I wanted to talk about Atlus's big expectations for Metaphor Refantazio, their next big new game and their brand new shiny IP.
The short explanation is obviously that they want it to be successful. But they really want it to push beyond to what even Persona sells.
Whether or not this happens is debatable. But it's clear that they have a lot riding on this game.
Pillar talk is very common among the bigger heads at Atlus. But the short answer is that they just want this game to do well.

I'm very excited for Metaphor and I'm happy a new IP is gonna be getting more attention. With a huge wave of games only being remakes and sequels, I'm happy to see Atlus trying something new.

Yeah, while it still is derivative of the SMT and Persona games in some ways I'm excited to see what comes of this

I always thought the etrian series was atlus third pillar tbh

I don't think it sells well enough for them to consider it as such but it's possible they considered it as a pillar at one point and no longer do. Atlus has kind of shifted perspective since the success of P5. But as of right now I'm unsure if this was the case at any point.

I don’t think the T rating is all that worrying, if fans are looking for a darker story. SMT is known for it’s darker themes and mature messaging but those games typically receive the Cero equivalent of a T rating in Japan. The only reason why SMT games have an M rating in America is because of the sexual aspects in certain demon designs, such as Preta’s dangling bit or everything that is Mara.

I'm gonna continue assuming that metaphor was always the third pillar but atlus thought the game would be out earlier. Probably just subbed in soul hackers and said "hey if this goes well we can call metahpor the 4th pillar since it's guaranteed to do at least decent!".

For those concerned that the game won't be able to explore mature and dark themes with T rating, a reminder that Xenogears also had T rating.

Personally I doubt soul hackers 2 has even sold 500k copies it certainly hasn’t got many steam reviews.

I can't imagine it's done especially well. Atlus hasn't really brought up the series much since then, unless I've missed a ton of merch drops or something, so I imagine they aren't seeing a good return on it.

Unless I’m wrong I believe this is the same team that did Tokyo mirage sessions another huge financial failure. I’m actually shocked this team is allowed to continue working.
