It's a learning curve, Teacher T. The experience is the best teacher, cause and effect. The grit in the road grime is something you are going have to contend with , as it is a constant, with chains as well. Don't envy your ride conditions mate, stay shiny side up.

One month into rainy season now. Won’t see an end to it until October. Then the best 3 months in Thailand. Clear air, clear blue skies and cool season. Hence November December and January is high tourist season for Thailand.

Like you I have been looking for a way to pre load the suspension when on my own as to check the belt tension, I have padock stand bobins on my CGT 650 and found that if I remove the seat I can hook each end of a ratchet strap onto the bobins and over the frame to pre load the suspension to the required amount enabling correct checking of the belt tension whilst on my own. I also found that after an initial run there had been some belt stretch and the coresponding wear on the rear pulley, hopefully resolved now the belt has been re tensioned.

If only I had a ratchet strap. I tried some cord but it was difficult to pull down the shocks to the correct level. How many KM on your kit so far?

Super video on belt maintenance! With the change in the pivot position, it changes the angle that would in favour of softer suspension. Would be interesting if you test it and with original spring.

In my experience, the belt may squeak or ‘chirp’ if it’s slightly out of alignment. Also, you can’t trust the factory makings on the adjustors. They are often inaccurate.

Love watching you doing the reviews. I still love my 350 classic and I want to get the 650 SM, but I'll keep the powder dry as you work through the problems. perhaps RE, in the meantime might take note of your work and incorporate some of those fixes into the next series of models.
@Teacher-T-Thailand

I very much doubt RE will take any note of Teacher T 😂 As much as I love the brand, I am highly critical at times. I call things out when they need to be. But hope you get that SM650 one day. Second hand ones coming up now. All those who can’t stand the uncomfortable rear shocks 😂🙏

@@Teacher-T-Thailand That’s good. I’ll keep an eyes out. I’ll definitely do the shock mod. Now here’s a question. Perhaps that belt should have been slightly shorter and that would resolve that arm problem. However an expensive fix for an already expensive fix.

Are you going to give a deep review on those hagon shocks. The belt drive is a nice mod but it's too expensive for me and the suspension needs an update for sure. Between the YSS and Hagon, hagons are more affordable and I'd like to know more about your experience of them

Yes, it all depends on what metal it’s made from. If aluminium I doubt the integrity. I will try and find out. But the idea is genius. Changes the angle of the shock, and reduces the swing arm leverage. 10/10 for thinking. 😂
@rogerharris8557
@rogerharris8557 17 күн бұрын
You have put your Hagon shocks to notch 2 after your initial thoughts it was really ok at the initial stage. Can you look more into this ie: do they feel the same as the originals after time, do they loose the correct feel after time, is notch 2 really good consistently over time etc? It would be good to do the shock extensions and see if the feel and height is good? Maybe with those and the original length Hagon shocks .Maybe more travel of shocks- ease, but enough height drop for bike as I am the same leg height as you and for me costs. 🤔
@Teacher-T-Thailand
@Teacher-T-Thailand 17 күн бұрын
I fitted the Hagons before having the belt drive final production fitted. My axle has since moved more to the rear, and I think has had an effect on the rear shocks. Setting 2 now feels like setting 1 when I first had them. It's a good question. Time will tell. And I think I will order that other mod part to trial. Like you say a cheaper option for most of it actually works 🙏

Hi Teacher T Thanks to you and RSTech I bought the belt drive and now, allegedly I've got the first one fitted to a Super Meteor in France. I've already done a few hundred Km's on it, It's a smoother and quieter/ ride. The roads in central France are perfect; Le Cher (Dépt 18) La Creuse (Dépt 23) and Vienne (Dept's 86/87). I haven't got to the squeek phase, but will follow your advice when I do! My local RE dealership have been fantastic and can see the benefits of belt over chain. Maybe the belt could be made 1 or 2 lugs shorter, what do you think. Rob
@Teacher-T-Thailand
@Teacher-T-Thailand 17 күн бұрын
Glad to hear you are enjoying the benefits of the belt drive. The belt chosen is a common belt. The next common belt size down was too short. To have one specially designed and made would be too expensive, and not easily available worldwide wide in the future. It’s not ideal, but works. Enjoy. 🙏

I opted for the standard ratio for my belt drive conversion, having the slightly larger diameter rear pulley puts the rear wheel spindle just about central in the adjustment range,

So what was the reason for measuring the bump stop on the shock absorber, and what was the green strap tied to the swinging arm for, were you planning to compress the suspension to check the belt tension?

@lnk4328
@lnk4328 18 күн бұрын
Can’t tell from the picture how much adjustment is left behind the washer. Doubt if the belt stretches much further after the first adjustment. I would rather have a longer wheelbase than a shorter belt. This modification is still on my radar. Thank you TT for the review.
@Teacher-T-Thailand
@Teacher-T-Thailand 18 күн бұрын
I understand why it’s so long. RS Tech have chosen to fit commercial standard length belts, which are easily available for many machine products worldwide wide. The next length down which fitted the Interceptor and Continental, was too short. The only way to get a mid sized belt would be to order a specific length. This would push the price up, and limit easy availability in the future. There is still plenty of adjustment left. And to be honest the belt should not stretch any more. Gates pride themselves on stretch free belts. It could have been a case my rear axle moved. But I doubt it. I think 1 adjustment I acceptable after 1,000km. Hopefully, fingers crossed, no more. 😂🙏

Power loss in a chain drive is minimum & belt drives lose a little more power.
@Teacher-T-Thailand
@Teacher-T-Thailand 10 күн бұрын
No power lose really noticeable on a 47hp bike. What is noticeable is the lack of jerk when accelerating from slow speed. No chain snatch, from the small amount of slack tension in a chain.
@tonyrebeiro
@tonyrebeiro 7 күн бұрын
Very true. Chain drive is the best, in terms of power loss reduction, where shaft drive is the worst and belt drive in the middle. But the other advantages of belt drive, make it worthwhile. But the very critical downside to a belt drive is its vulnerability to sabotage, if the bike is parked in an unprotected area, where miscreants can access it.

How are you able to get the correct tension useing the tension gauge without the rider on the bike as it was emphersised in the instalation vidio that the rider needs to be on the bike to do this correctly and obtain the correct belt tension. Surley the method in this vidio is not accurate as no rider sitting on the bike toi give the preload required?
@Teacher-T-Thailand
@Teacher-T-Thailand 4 күн бұрын
You are absolutely correct. However I made the smallest of tension, and when I later got some one similar weight to sit on the bike, all was well. I did try pulling it down to where the shock rubbers sat with cord also. 🐠

There is a slight wobble seen, most probably because the big pulley is slightly eccentric. That should not happen. It even has a visible wobble. For the money charged, this is not good. Shoddy workmanship.

Ok. This is before I torqued the rear axle. The whole drive sits on the Cush rubbers. It does not centre onto the bearing until it is fully torqued. . If there is a design fault, it.s with RE. We have covered this on earlier videos.
