You forgot the "brain zaps" (withdrawal symptoms).. Nobody talks about it. I think because it's only with long time users.

I love Your attitude Dr.B, You are the way forward in addiction treatment. I wondered if do You advise Your patients on dietary requirements during early treatment? Most addict's in active addiction are eating a purely refined sugar/carb diet with no vitamin's, fruits, vegatables, fatty acids and other nutrients (I say this from experience). My opinion (and I'm sure most will agree) is that a healthy diet is ESSENTIAL for not just body health, but brain health. The brain needs to rewire in a healthy manner, while in treatment for the best outcome possible. Even taking a B Vitamin supplement will help with brain health (low B vitamin levels lead to depression and anxiety in a healthy brain) Self care Includes a healthy diet. Be good to Yourselves everyone 💜🌿

Im in recovery and the withdrawals are 99% psychological. You will have severe mood swings, feelings of depression, irritability and restlessness. You dont get dope sick like when you're withdrawing from opiates. Its all psychological but dont underestimate the power of that. Its been months now and the psychological chains are still just as strong. I had to completely move to a new area where I didn't know anyone just to help prevent a relapse. The biggest hurdle for me was that "random encounter" where someone might have some or offer it. Im not out of the woods by any means. Go with GOD!

Completely psychological? Uhh...NO!!! It's not like heroin but it definitely affects your physiology. Depleting neurotransmitter and other nutrients. Which when supplementing with precursors, greatly enhances success. NAC, tyrosine, macuna Perrins help replenish dopamine. 5htp, st. John's wort help with serotonin. NAC IS THE BASE PRECURSER FOR BOTH OF THESR. WELLBUTRIN HELPS TO ELEVATE DOPAMINE LEVELS, DECREASING CRAVINGS. BRAIN INFLAMMATION IS ALSO A PROBLEM. RRSEARCH THOSE YOURSELF, Lol CANT RRMEMBER WHAT IS BEST.

I was a heavy user for 13 years injecting the drug several times daily, the hardest part about quitting was leaving behind the friends and people that were the circle of friends in my life.the withdrawals weren’t exactly withdrawals,I stopped because I was tired of being without money ,once I owned my addiction and posted my intention to all family and friends on social media,I stopped cold, ive been off meth for 6 months, I still have vivid dreams where I’m with old friends mixing up meth ready for injection, I always wake up just before I inject, I think my brain sees it as a type of mental death that it shields me from.

I'm tiered of seeing people all messed up around me. Why can't people just leave the drugs alone and live free and have good things. But no everyone just rather stay high. Well I used to be one of them people. My attitude changed, my chest started hurting and I was losing my self esteem and respect for others. I'm still nip and dabbling but plan to be clean completely very soon. Its not so fun anymore and I don't want to die. I'm 57 now and I want to see my grand babies grow old. I'm clean off opiates 7 years now to be clean altogether and live my life like GOD wants me too. DON'T USE METH. YOUR LIFE IS WORTH MORE.

The part about going back after being clean for weeks hit me hard. Was off for 3 months. I was going to sleep at 10pm every night and waking up at 6am every morning for the 3 months, as well as doing yoga in the morning and started meditating for the first time in my life, and i had never felt better in my life. I loved waking up in the morning, day after day.. i thought i was free. I felt free. For a little time at least. As the days went by, there just always felt like something was missing, like i was forgetting to do something. I tried so hard to figure out why, no matter what i did or what good habits I adopted, i just always felt there’s that one last thing to do. I was powerless against my subconscious. By the time i had figured out what the feeling was, my brain had already made a full proof reason why i can def do it just this one time. I mean, i used to do it once and not pick it up for months all the time. It’ll be just like that. Except even better, bc think about all the experience i have now. I can have the best of both worlds. Ill be living the good life like i am now plus ill feel whole again. Well, i prob dont have to finish writing this but what the hell. So i was able to win this argument with myself for 3 months. That whole time i was never around it and even that was tough to control of. But , as if he were the devil himself, my cousin( who i usually used with) thought he’d invite me over top hangout. Which we did often throughout the 3 months. But for some reasons, i still cant think of, he has his other buddy there too. As i walked in the door and see the cloud of smoke and the all too familiar smell, i was helpless. That mid as well had been a gun to my temple. At least in that case i would of had 2 choices. Sadly on this day, i had no choice at all. It has been 2 months since this happened and Ihave only had a couple days not using. I would like to thank you for the video, as well as put forward my word to dose down for a week and take the jump again. At least this time i know I’m jumping into shark infested water.

Smell can be very triggering... I was walking in a city park {UK} and suddenly caught the unmistakable smell of heroin fumes.. what was really strange, the person I was walking with smelled it too...and neither mentioned it to the other at the moment of smelling it, only a few mins later.. ''Did you smell a strange smell on the hill? 'Yes!..It smelled like someone was smoking gear' I was triggered very badly once by walking in the Countryside down a green lane. { an old cart-track} On the side was some tinfoil and a bottle, and a lighter {Heroin and Crack} I looked at the foil, glazed with really good quality heroin..the person/people clearly had wasted loads. A straight friend was with me.. She grabbed the foil out of my hands and said ''Don't you DARE'' and screwed it up.. She phoned the local police about it and they said ''Madam. What do you expect us to do about it?..Hide behind an Oak tree til they come back?'' Such things can come out of the blue. We have to learn to ride those stresses...and it isn't easy!

@@Oakleaf700 I definitely agree. People are selfish, just something that came from evolution. When someone gets clean, and was a regular user with someone else, the other person has to deal with alot more guilt. So by tempting you, and trying to successfully pull you back into using, they can feel less guilt for the things they do. Instead of seeing others get the help they need and continuing to feel like a piece of shit. It all stems from selfishness but is something those of us trying to grow need to always be aware of.(edit: or I guess, if they were still clean, they didn't put their self in your shoes and made a really bad joke.)

He hits the withdrawal symptoms on the head. For me I started using to numb past experiences in my childhood. From what I noticed, alot of drug addicts have been abused sexual and physically. It helped mask my pain and helped me with my confidence. When I hear people talking about drug addicts like we are less than them only fires me up. Most drug addicts are different from regular people spiritual. Spiritual, we are on a higher level than others. We see and hear things others can't wrap there minds around. Pls never feel like your alone because there are so many of us and we share your experiences. I love all my brothers and sisters ❤️ 💙

Don't ever get complacent in your sobriety! You are going to be recovering for the rest of your life. Its HARD AS HELL but u can do anything you put your mind too! 4 years on January 8th ♡ loving every minute of it. I STILL struggle with handling emotions but that is what therapy is for! Ill also give a shout out to CELEBRATE RECOVERY for connecting me to my sponsor and more importantly the Lord. Take the time you need to get back to you once you decide this is the direction you want to go its only up from there 😊 (Remember; it won't happen overnight)

Don't listen to this shit about it being a desiese that you suffer from or deal with for the rest of your life, and if youare recovering addict that it's something that will be with you forever is bullshit. It's up to you whether or not you're going to let it become a burden obstacle or hurdle of some sort..or if you accept that every minute is a chance for a brand new beginning, clean slate, I hang out with people who smoke heroin meth and pills all day and night everyday... Three years clean from opiate after five years addicted, to heroin. Iam all good, no steps, no bullshit, just me and a decision I've already made up my mind, not to do the drug the way I was when it officially grabbed ahold. Take responsibility for your actions and stop this product of my environment shit....do what you know you should, and don't do what you shouldn't. If u can't, it's on you

I relapsed.... after 12 freaking years. Yes, it can happen, faster than you can imagine. And kicking opiates at 30 is not the same as 45. It gets harder with age, and it's definitely not easy to start out with. I think the most important part is to work on the deeper issues that made you use, during your sobriety. The more you can do that, the more you will be equipped to make a better life for yourself, but if you just quit the substance, then you aren't touching on the underlying issues, and you can very easily relapse. Wishing you all the best. 🙏

I became addicted by accident while under a severe nervous breakdown. I started using at first casually, then once I started coming out of the fog of the breakdown I was addicted. I’ve been struggling ever since to stop doing it for good. I stopped on my own for 9 months, then started again, and it’s been off and on ever since. It’s the withdrawals that drive me to use again because it’s SO HARD to get through them. I am not mentally addicted because I want OFF this drug FOREVER, but I am physically addicted. I don’t like the meetings they don’t help at all, and there is NO rehabs whatsoever in my state that will accept my insurance and going out of state is out of the question. I don’t have any support because NOBODY accept those who I get the drug from knows that I’m even on it or have been on it or anything. So I’m literally alone in this. But I’ll keep trying. I’m not giving up.

You’re not alone. It’s worse for me cause I have learned to function and be productive while on meth over the years. Started 2020 after lockdown over an emotional trauma. Safe to say it helped me from being suicidal at that time but now it feels like I cannot experience natural happiness without Mets in my system. I wan to stop but I’m afraid it’ll affect my productivity and as such might kill my joy. Not to say there’s joy in this. I’m just mentally Stuck.

May I add you may find yourself crying about how beautiful the mother/daughter relationship is while watching a tampon commercial. I find that all the emotion you distance yourself from during active addiction is waiting there for you and is delivered to your doorstep about ten minutes after you come down. Thanks for your knowledge and compassion Dr. I think one factor that keeps addicts from undertaking the difficult work of recovery is the level of social scorn and even hatred heaped upon anyone involved with drug addiction. This scorn can unfortunately come from many clinicians...The dignity you offer can be a critical loan to the slightly more -feral if you will- addict blessedly and for whatever reason having the courage to investigate the idea of returning to a less diseased humanistic state of being- an asset to themselves..family ..community..country. Good luck to all of you.

@@demonsparkx today is day 120. I have learned a few things… one is no matter where the road takes you, it’s the same distance to the ditch. This actually helps me because knowing this itch will always be there and that the pain of not scratching will cycle from good to bad but never fully gone, takes the shame of wanting to use again away. This is so hard but it’s my distrust and faith lost in humanity that is what will kill me. I have to take chances on letting people see all of me and remember they are reacting with the info and tools available to them. If they judge it is probably because they can only work with the experience they know and maybe give them time or try again with someone else. But isolation and waiting for a day that it will be less scary to open up or ask for help when you just can’t sit by yourself through the anguish that a bad day can bring… that will be the death of me and I really believe it’s the same for anyone in our shoes. Oxytocin comes from a long hug or a funny story and helps heal our dopamine drought. Connect with others. Also remember….. very important… with every high in life… no matter how big or small there is a low from the loss of that high that is slightly stronger. Watch a hilarious KZfaq video and recognize the sadness of it being over. Feel the pleasure of a good meal or a good visit with friends and give yourself the gift in recognizing the beauty of that experience and how it is sad that it is over. I don’t know why but this balance has helped (when I remember)

I safely stopped using meth 3 years ago. I had been a meth head for 30 years and quit because it became "old" just as I had become! It wasn't that hard. The difficult part was realizing I could function at work with out it as I had always relied on it's effects to keep me working through the day. I weaned myself the first week only using 2 "issues" one in the AM and another after lunch. After a week I used caffeine pills for another week. After that week I was able to function normally and without any drugs. Walking and exercise helped a lot also. As of right now I'm probably in the best condition and health I've ever been in for many many years. Good luck to any one seeking a healthy life style. I can answer any questions posed to me about my drug addiction and how I quit.

If you're not, your time will come, but know that sometimes we hurt ourselves more in that process of knowing we need to quit and not doing it. God knows and is always there to help you if you choose to go that route. I wouldn't be here today if I hadn't. Much love to those who have quit, to those who are struggling to quit, as well as those still using. There is a way out, and someone who cares. ❤️

I did meth for 20 years and can say this is the most accurate, non-sensational desscription of what happens when you quit meth. Quiting meth is not dangerous like heroin or alcohol, and like the doctor says it's not really detox. There is no chemical dependence in your body, it's the psychological addiction that is the hardest to treat and will take a life time to overcome. You do not need rehab to quit, it is not dangerous to quit cold turkey, you'll be depressed for a couple weeks. You don't need to go to one of these clinics. Your best bet is to start seeing a shrink. Medication is not the answer, sorry doc, this is where you are incorrect.

I have been on drugs for add since childhood, and I don’t feel that my brain can function without SOMETHING after this many years. I get frequent “brain zaps” any time I try to stop. They are very uncomfortable and I even strained my neck one time because of the way the brain zap episode made me twitch. I really need help and am at a total loss on how to fill all of my responsibilities and quit at the same time. A lot of people rely on me (that don’t know about my addiction) and They can’t know. @ninjalina you can't replace one stimulant for another one. You have to live with the fact that your energy level will decline and there is no alturnitive for that. But I can assure you eating the correct foods that boost your energy level ,plenty of sleep and things like watermelon help during the initial detox phase. After 7 days you will fill very lethargic still , and my advice is to stay away from caffeine drinks because of the risk of uphoric recall. As time passes your body will pull the energy it needs from the food you eat and you will be able to function at a lower (normal ) productivity output just fine ,but you will not have the energy to work like your accustom too. I like what you said about it not being about the high ,because for most long term users the tolerance level is so high that it's impossible to experience that sudden rush of energy the drug gave us during early stages of use. Believe it or not many people function on a day to day basis where they are not high and interact with people without being weirded out. They also don't steal or look for ways to get over on people ,they function just like the rest of society. But society will never except the fact that there are people amoung them that eat ,sleep ,and are productive with the greater good of community ,family, friends ,etc.. because they have never seen that as the case. I would much rather be around a long term functioning meth addict than a drunk. I know both sides of the coin

Bottom line, real treatment starts with you and support like what this man gives many people! And you sir are a good person for helping people treat the underlying cause of addiction. Finding other outlets like exercise to calm the mind. Connecting with the right people. Finding a way to love yourself because you're not just hurting you, you're hurting everyone that loves you and anyone you may be enabling or influencing. Don't think about ever giving up on yourself! You'll wish you hadn't. The drug isn't in control of you, you are!! One love baby God blesses you everyday

Vary beautifully said! I love the way you handled that last parent you were talking about. Every time she pissed dirty you didn’t Shane her you asked her why. Until she started to think “why do I keep using?” And started thinking of the source reason. That’s both loving and effective on helping people fix there addictions. Shame will only make you fall deeper into your addiction.

I'm ready ..I'm too old for this game and I want my kids love and respect back..and I will isolate from everyone..

I'm proud to announce that today is my 90 day clean life without meth! I'm currently not in any recovery or support group. I've DELETED everyone involved in that COMPLETELY out of my life in regards it. I truly felt that meth heightened me physically and mentally but now that I'm of a some what clear mind I understand that I was already bigger and better than it all along. Awe yeah and my clean is 100%!

I wish you the best. The good news is that the human body has an amazing ability to heal! May take a little longer than we'd like, and may not heal to the point of pre use, but you will improve everyday that passes without using.

From my experience one of the worst feelings as an addict was when I ran out and wasn't able to get anymore. Same feeling when trying to quit. I had none and knew that I couldn't get anymore so that made it a lot worse psychologically. So what I done is actually kept some and didn't use it. I knew that I had it to use if I wanted to, I just chose not to. That takes tremendous will power to do but it helped me all the way through. Once I knew that I was good I flushed it and haven't looked back. Hopefully this idea will be able to help someone else in need. I promise you got this. You only have to believe that yourself.

I was able to quit after several years of serious tweaking. I would say cold turkey, but did take xanax occasionally to get some relief from the horrendous withdrawal. I thought I'd never feel good or have any energy again. It took me a while, possibly 3 mnths, to start feeling normal again. But eventually I started working and felt great. At that point the sobriety felt better than being high. If I was able to quit then you can too. Be strong and patient, most importantly pray.
