Methodist History: The Founding Mothers of Mother’s Day

In the late 1860s, before there was an official Mother’s Day holiday in the U.S., a Methodist mom organized “Mothers’ Friendship Day,” at which mothers gathered with former Union and Confederate soldiers to promote reconciliation. We asked Harriett Olson, the current head of United Methodist Women, and Donna Miller, archivist at Historic St. George’s United Methodist Church, to tell us more about the women behind the holiday.

I'm curious about the historical actors being shown in the video. Are there regular, ecudational events at St. George's? Thank you for posting this video. I was completely unaware of the orgins of Mother's Day.

I wounder what all those fine lady's would think about what's happening within the United Methodist Church today , I wounder why they are not standing up to what's happening or will they continue to turn blind eye to changing his word , just wondering,

@Mark Monk, I believe they are "turning in their graves!" Madeline Southard and the 8 women who began the Methodist Foreign Missionary Society, and Georgia Harkness are turning in their graves! The Women Society of Christian Service, from which these women were forerunners to serve the poor, and educate them to be faithful people of the Way. Through the years they evolved to a new religious organization under the Methodist Church, The UM Women. Christian Service was removed.

Mark 7:9 King James Version (KJV) 9 And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition. In my opinion methodist have missed the mark how about the mothers day shrine its worshiping mothers a church dedicated to mothers .
