When measuring the tube end let the caliper lay back and square up on the end of the tube (if it is square...). You will cover a little larger area, and it will be a tiny bit easier to read. ✌😎

I have given up on trying to get a perfect paint job on my rockets, they always seem to look like trash after a couple launches anyway. Now I just do a couple coats of filler primer, sand it off then spray color. Just enough to protect the tubes without adding a bunch of weight.

Try using acrylic floor wax for a clear coat. Been using it since the 90's and it works on any paint surface.

21:40 I've had this conversation with myself. At 4am. In my drawers having just woke up... my sleep disrupted by thoughts of imperfect surfaces and inconsistent glossiness. Concluded it could be better and began sanding it all off.

For a good finish, I've found that the sanding should take longer than building the rocket.

If you really want to take your paint to the next level, try using a guide coat to use as a sanding guide. 3m makes one in a can or you can use a cheap can of black spray paint. Lightly dust it on and start sanding. It will leave all your low areas with black where you either need to sand more or apply filler. Great job on it though and it looks really good.

Do you wet sand after primer or just the base coat?

I sanded the primer, but did not wet sand it. Most of the time, unless it's filler primer, I don't sand the primer at all.

One of my favorite bands and guitarists (Tom Scholz) of all time. I've also got the legendary Rockman X100 pocket amp that I can plug into and play with Boston tones. Pretty awesome.
