Not welding, brazing with bronze, not brass. The Reynolds 531 alloy steel tubing cannot be welded.

Just bought one of these frames from Wasp (Rind Tutt) for my Triumph Metisse 500 that was originally built by Brian Nadin in 1991. Went into the Chells hands then mine had it for five years now, fabulous machine. Here I am in fact at Narbeth West Wales '13 1st and two seconds ha ha.

This is bronze welding when a bead is formed on the surface of the joint, brazing uses capillary action to draw the filler into the joint.

The Reynolds 531 alloy steel tubing used once on the Rickmans cannot be welded. There are plenty of brazed structures as the TGV wagons, automobile chassis, plane frames etc as a lot of special steel alloys cannot be welded.

@@MrAluminox Reynolds 531 steel tubing is perfectly OK to bronze weld. My double engined Triumph drag bike has Reynolds 531 frame welded in 1969 and is still perfectly OK. I am aware brazing in a furnace usually with sweated lugs is a different process. The Reynolds 531 booklet I still have recommends bronze welding.

I just fabricated an intake manifold for a 71 Daytona. I should have brazed it instead of welding.

I have always liked the 650 Metisse . but being 6.3 foot tall, the bike is small for me to sit on. its a shame they don't make them a little taller. But the guys back then were short.

I assume you are using a gas flux, or is the rod pre-fluxed?

Correct Pete, gas fed through the line. Makes my job a whole lot easier!

Stubby Cuts Thanks for the info, is it the oxy line that goes through or the acetylene. I don't do a lot of bronze-welding but may be one day I might try the gas flux, I usually use the tub of flux powder but it does leave a mess on the weld when finished. Ally welding with gas is my forte although I'm a spark by trade! Cheers. Pete.

Sadly they are utter crap build quality. I made the mistake and dropped £15k on one. After a 20 mile (oil covered) ride the bike went to SRM for a survey. The bike had been wired up incorrectly, the frame wasn’t straight, the engine had 60” piston in an 80” bore, the gearbox was cracked and crankcases didn’t match. The hollow breather cam had been replaced by a solid cam so the engine couldn’t breathe, the rear break light had been connected to the brake obis a eve of chain link. The sit on but the eventually for repair up to the standard I should age river it was £10k. Even after all this the bike can’t be registered due to the fact Jerry took the frame numbers out the back of the Rickman book and stamped up new frames! DVLA shut him down yet he still sells them.DVLA has also removed the region dents over 150 of the original limited edition Steve MQueen bikes
