In the third story of the five-part 'Transit 2024' series, Nick Westoll tours the Finch West LRT line. Metrolinx officials say they're "very confident" the line will open by the end of 2024 due to recent progress. It was supposed to be open in 2023.

unlike the eglinton disaster this project has been progressing at a consistently good pace and from what i've seen this opening date seems realistic. a 1 year delay is to be expected after a pandemic.

Eglinton is a construction disaster (it will be finished one day and will be a great addition to Toronto) but it's not a fair comparison as Eglinton is longer and a large part of it is underground and it is built in the median of a wide avenue in a much higher density area. If they'll open Finch at the end of 2024 it will be 4.5 years, which is quite long for a 10km almost entirely at grade LTR.

I live right in the heart of this construction. It was supposed to open this month. They said then in the spring. Now, this is the first time I am hearing it will open next December, out of no where. Unbelievable. They have finished most of, except finishing resurfacing of the streets planting the remaining plants and trees, and the train testing of the majority of trucks.

I wish Line 6 could be extended further not only to serve the airport but even Kipling Station. If that does happen, Line 6 could replace the existing 900 Airport & 927 Hwy 27 buses & could finally make good use of the empty trackbed at Kipling Station because I also see Line 6 as a line that almost makes up for the abandoned Etobicoke RT due to it's route being parallel to the Finch Hydro Corridor. I still feel like Line 6 has the potential to be a way to make up for the abandoned Etobicoke RT line IMO.

current plans call for Line 5 being extended to the airport. I think ideally Line 5 and Line 6 should meet at Malton GO, allowing easy access to the airport for both Kitchener Line and Line 6 riders.

@@Skyfooglethere is actually a much better plan for this, and that is a new GO/UP station at the Woodbine Racetrack which the LRT will extend to there as well this has been one of the most talked about potential transit projects in Etobicoke

Extending Line 6 to Kipling is a great idea. I also think Line 6 should go along the Etobicoke RT corridor to Kipling, and imo, Line 5 should replace the Pearson Link train with an extension to Viscount. The two lines would connect at the Eglinton/Martin Grove station with this concept.

I'm glad this was built, but I would not call this rapid transit since it is mostly not grade separated and there is no traffic signal priority. The LRT will likely be slightly slower than the Finch Express bus. It should have been elevated in sections like the Vancouver SkyTrain, stops spaced further apart, and maintain frequent bus service so people can move between stops quickly.
@Skyfoogle
@Skyfoogle 7 ай бұрын
the lack of signal priority is devastating. city hall just treats these transit projects as a means of getting busses off the road so car traffic runs smoother.
@vgls88
@vgls88 7 ай бұрын
My understanding was that it would get signal priority ( I thought I heard on RM Transit's channel). I looked it up just now and I'm quoting Metrolinx for the finch west LRT : "The LRT will provide service that is faster and more frequent and reliable than existing bus service by travelling in dedicated lanes with signal priority at intersections." Let's hope they stick to it
@Amir-qz4bn
@Amir-qz4bn 7 ай бұрын
Well at least there are dedicated lanes for it, but with no signal priority it really just becomes another YRT Viva clone when they go on their bus lane sections.

@@waryaawariiri1812 a one year delay following the entire economy shutting down during the pandemic, thats pretty good timing. TTC has yet to comment if the 36 Finch buses will continue to run once the finch LRT is open. Especially around the Humberwood loop. I think it should stilll run, because a lot of people around that area go to Humber College or work...how would they access the Finch LRT? TTC needs to comment on what will happen with those buses.

They're not even confident about the Eglinton LRT opening in 2024
@carlinthomas9482
@carlinthomas9482 7 ай бұрын
Eglinton should have been built as heavy rail transit (subway or metro) instead of LRT. There are already concerns that the at grade portion of the LRT in the eastern section won't be able to handle future passenger volumes. The at-grade section in Scarborough will also be much slower compared to the tunneled portions. If they decide to extend the Eglinton LRT east, they need to have it grade separated and possibly even upgrade the rest of the line to a full subway.

Does it make any sense to take over a public road and put a light rail Trâm down the middle ? The price they are paying for this they could have built a over head metro line like the BTS in Bangkok . The TTC is may be better then some cities in North America but compared to the big cities in Asia it’s is totally useless
