Thanks for answering my commented question about being a layperson and becoming an Arahant, in your previous video. I really love content on the latter aspect of the path I find it incredibly useful. This channel is an invaluable resource to me, and to many others I assume. It’s very rare to find monks living in such a fashion, while at the same time tailoring their teachings to westerners’ conditioned interpretation of language. The way Ajahn nyanamoli teaches really illuminates the path in a way that’s conceptual, relatable, and not so esoteric as to be confusing. Blessing to hear the dhamma from this venerable group. Thank you again. I know my gratitude probably isn’t needed for the continuation of this series. But I imagine it’s useful for this Sangha to know that the content is fantastic and having the desired effect. The path is clearer than ever thanks to you.

Lord buddha chose his words so wisely referring to "all beings" in this sutta. May all beings be free of pain and suffering.

I think this talk is very important. I made a lot of progress by letting go of following strictly the methods in the book ‘The Mind Illuminated’, and focussing on truth within my own practice. It was scary, because my rational brain kept projecting doubts in my perception. Thanks for the talk.

I'm glad to find someone saying clearly that chanting the words is of no use. It's such a basic understanding and shockingly rare to find among monks. I am highly dubious about some sections of the sutta itself also, however, especially the middle part of the sutta that sounds like a prayer or a chant, "let him think" and so on - was that really what the Buddha said? - to put it shortly, it makes no sense and doesn't fit. An extract from an interesting article I found on this subject: "Now here is the main problem in this section: look around, are beings happy? Are beings free from suffering? All around beings are killing each other, tearing each other apart, doing harm to one another. Our wish ‘May they not tear each other apart, may they be nice to one another’ has no efficacy whatsoever, even if it is the wish of an arahat or a Buddha. However anyone might wish this, it is not so, and will never be so. While of course it is true that one who is ‘skilful in good’ should have compassion and friendliness towards all, not allowing even a speck of ill-will towards anyone to come into his mind, not wishing anyone even the slightest harm, it does not follow that he should wish or say, ‘May all beings be of a joyful heart, may all beings be happy.’ So how should we regard the instruction to think like this? Is the Buddha telling us to think in such a way, to wish for something that can never be? What is the use of such a wish, such a way to think? ‘One who is skilful in good’ is one who is wise. Wisdom means knowing the truth, knowing reality and acting in line with it. Wishing ‘may all beings be happy’ is not acting in line with truth or reality at all. Dhamma is for the one who searches truth; it has nothing to do with imaginary things or wishes that can never be fulfilled." its about samadhi. what is 'wishful thinking' in this world is not in another. its not wishing others hapiness, its about the mind state.

• KHP9:METTASUTTA: "What should be done by one skillful in good So as to gain the State of Peace is this: Let him be able, and upright and straight, Easy to speak to, gentle, and not proud, Contented too, supported easily, With few tasks, and living very lightly; His faculties serene, prudent, and modest, Unswayed by the emotions of the clans; And let him never do the slightest thing That other wise men might hold blamable. And let him think: “In safety and in bliss May creatures all be of a blissful heart. Whatever breathing beings there may be. No matter whether they are frail or firm, With none excepted, be they long or big Or middle-sized, or be they short or small Or thick, as well as those seen or unseen, Or whether they are dwelling far or near, Existing or yet seeking to exist. May creatures all be of a blissful heart. Let no one work another one's undoing Or even slight him at all anywhere: And never let them wish each other ill Through provocation or resentful thought.” And just as might a mother with her life Protect the son that was her only child, So let him then for every living thing protect his boundless mind; Above, below, and all round in between, Untroubled, with no enemy or foe. And while he stands or walks or while he sits Or while he lies down, free from drowsiness, Let him resolve upon this mindfulness: This is Divine Abiding /peaceful life here, they say. Thank you for the sutta, however I think I found a more accurate translation. This is what should be done By one who is skilled in goodness, And who knows the path of peace: Let them be able and upright, Straightforward and gentle in speech, Humble and not conceited, Contented and easily satisfied, Unburdened with duties and frugal in their ways. Peaceful and calm and wise and skillful, Not proud or demanding in nature. Let them not do the slightest thing That the wise would later reprove. Wishing: In gladness and in safety, May all beings be at ease. Whatever living beings there may be; Whether they are weak or strong, omitting none, The great or the mighty, medium, short or small, The seen and the unseen, Those living near and far away, Those born and to-be-born - May all beings be at ease! Let none deceive another, Or despise any being in any state. Let none through anger or ill-will Wish harm upon another. Even as a mother protects with her life Her child, her only child, So with a boundless heart Should one cherish all living beings; Radiating kindness over the entire world: Spreading upwards to the skies, And downwards to the depths; Outwards and unbounded, Freed from hatred and ill-will. Whether standing or walking, seated or lying down Free from drowsiness, One should sustain this recollection. This is said to be the sublime abiding. By not holding to fixed views, The pure-hearted one, having clarity of vision, Being freed from all sense desires, Is not born again into this world.

A better translation: Sutta Nipāta 1.8 Metta Sutta: This is what is done by those who are skilled in goodness, “­Karaṇīya­matthaku­s­ale­na­, and who fully understand the path of peace. Yanta santaṁ padaṁ abhisamecca; (They are)capable and upright, very upright(Strict adherence to morality, Respectable) Sakko ujū ca suhujū ca, good speech, gentle and not prideful; Sūvaco cassa mudu anatimānī. Content and easy to support, Santussako ca subharo ca, unbusied, frugal in his habits, Appakicco ca sallahukavutti; Peaceful faculties, clever, Santindriyo ca nipako ca, not intrusive or greedy amongst families. Appagabbho kulesvananugiddho. Not doing the slightest thing Na ca khuddamācare kiñci, that the wise would find fault with. Yena viññū pare upavadeyyuṁ; Happy and secure, Sukhino va khemino hontu, May all beings be happy! Sabbasattā bhavantu sukhitattā. Whatever living creatures, Ye keci pāṇabhūtatthi, moving or unmoving, without leaving any out Tasā vā thāvarā vanavasesā; long or large, Dīghā vā ye va mahantā, medium, short, unusually shaped, Majjhimā rassakā aṇukathūlā. visible or invisible, Diṭṭhā vā ye va adiṭṭhā, living far or near, Ye va dūre vasanti avidūre; those born or to be born: Bhūtā va sambhavesī va, May all beings be happy! Sabbasattā bhavantu sukhitattā. Not acting against, Na paro paraṁ nikubbetha, nor despising anyone anywhere. Nātimaññetha katthaci na kañci; Even when irritated by the perception of resistance, Byārosanā paṭighasañña, not wishing suffering on anyone. Nāññamaññassa dukkhamiccheyya. Even as a mother would protect Mātā yathā niyaṁ puttam her only beneficial child, Āyusā ekaputtamanurakkhe; so too should all, Evampi sabbabhūtesu, develop an infinite mind. Mānasaṁ bhāvaye aparimāṇaṁ. Metta/Benevolent towards the entire world, Mettañca sabbalokasmi, develop an infinite mind. Mānasaṁ bhāvaye aparimāṇaṁ; Above, below, all round, Uddhaṁ adho ca tiriyañca, unconfined, friendly and without enemies. Asambādhaṁ averamasapattaṁ. Whether standing, walking, sitting, Tiṭṭhaṁ caraṁ nisinno va, or lying down, not becoming weary, Sayāno yāvatāssa vitamiddho; Always remember this; Etaṁ satiṁ adhiṭṭheyya, for this, is the lifestyle of the Gods. Brahmametaṁ vihāramidhamāhu. Attained to view, Diṭṭhiñca anupaggamma, accomplished in insight and virtue, Sīlavā dassanena sampanno; freed by the destruction of sensual desire, Kāmesu vinaya gedhaṁ, they never again are conceived in a womb. Na hi jātuggabbhaseyya punaretī”ti.

How can we say that there is only one Buddha is the world at one time . I'm interested in undedsanding this claim .

I'd like to ask the venerables the following, please: When should a person leave Buddhim? When should a person quit their interest in the Dhamma (even if doing so may require some force)? When is the time to say, "This isn't going anywhere, it's better that I focus on something else" ? It can very well happen that one has the ambition, but not the ability. It would certainly spare everyone a lot of time and grief if those who don't have what it takes would know better than to pursue the impossible. Thank you.

(VIII.129) All whosoever who are happy in the world are (so) through the wish for the happiness of others; while all whosoever who are miserable in the world are (so) through the wish for the happiness of themselves. - Shantideva Not debatable, you can see it in your experience. Truth is independent of belief.
