My mom used to work at the same middle school in which I studied. So she's friend of some of my ex-teachers. One day one of them came to my house looking for my mom but she wasn´t there so she gave me some money she owed to my mom and when she left it was like "Gracias mijo" and I said "Gracias a ti" and immediately I felt so awkward but I just closed the door. We have that sixth sense when it is not ok I think so haha.

OMG!! That's true, every time that I say I'm Mexican, people from other nationalities doesn't believe me because I'm blonde and have blue eyes, and this is because the stereotype of beign "Mexican" is to have brown skin color and dark hair , which a lot of us have (but there are also a LOT of white Mexicans, especially in the northern areas in Mexico), but what people forget is that our race is a mixture and like Joss said we come in every color, shape and personality.

You is both formal and informal depending on context. ex: Hey! what's up with you? (in) Hello sir, how are you today? (f) Now I was born and raised in the U.S. but I my parents made it clear that I have to address adults with a title and never use their first name. This included superiors as well. When I got to college I was unsure of how to address my professors because they all prefered a first name basis which was just strange to me because the people I call by their first name only are either people who are younger than me or about the same age, friends, cousins and thats about it.

First of all, I love you guys. I´m a Mexican living in Canada for two years now, and every time you come up with one of these topics, which is often, feels like: ¨finally!!! someone understands me!¨. Feliz cumpleaños Joss (is it short for Josseline?)!!!! P.S. I got a car at 15... and a half!... hahaha... and a huge Quinceañera party! :D P.S.2. It´s a lime! Sometimes I don't use "usted" to refer to my relatives but I always try to talk politely with them. I’m living with roomies and the owner of the house it’s an old (but not too old) lady, and my other roommates talk to her informal and it seems like she’s okay with it and wants me to talk her like that but I can’t because of that thing that I feel inside when I call older people tú jasjjajaajaja i don’t know, it’s weird

Well typical Mexican/latino has darker skin (mestizo)... so it's understandable. But it's also logical that they have also white skin, because some Spanish people didn't mix with Indians. Simple as that.

Growing up in the US I got asked/told this A LOT! And I get people's ignorance, Lord knows I have my own. But after a while of having to explain this to various people, it gets old. What really irritates me is those who passionately argue I can't possibly be Latino, as if they know my heritage better than I do. It's ok to be curious and ask questions, but we also need to be considerate of others. It's nobody elses duty to educate us, clarify our ignorance, or satisfy our curiosity.

English: To my closer familiars I used to speak them informal (tu) and sometimes I even call them by their names but in the case for strangers or professors I always speak to them in formal (usted). I think it depends on the person and how does he/she feel to be addressed to them, because I've had professors who prefer to be called by their name to feel closer to you and i'm not gonna lie, it feels really awkward due to my personal costumes. I also like the korean language, and it also has different speech levels of formality (7). But they can be englobed as three: higher levels (high status, strangers, very formal), middle level (ambiguous social situations but also formal) and lower level (close friends, relatives or children). Each one with their own unique set of verb endings which are used to indicate the level of formality of a situation. As you can see, you choose depending on the relation that you have with the person, status or age. And as I love the korean language, it's a relief that in Mexico we're more relaxed on that topic and it's not extremely as in korean society.

Love this! I'm from Jalisco and this is so relatable, especially the "are you sure you're mexican part". 😊 I've seen controversy over calling a grandparent abuelo or abuela instead of abuelito and abuelita. Tried to call my grandma abuela once and she was livid😳 I also think it's weird how we say tio and Tia, but in the American culture I see that many are called by their first names instead of Aunt or uncle.
