I know that Tah is not representative of all Asian people and Thailand is just one part of Asia that is incredibly diverse. Mexico is really diverse too so I am not representative of all Mexicans. We just thought that it would be fun to show some of the differences that we noticed as an Asian and a Mexican living together.

I’m fully Mexican and I always have taken off my shoes before entering my house or anybody else’s (of course I ask before I do). I don’t know why people don’t do it. The street is filthy. There’s dog poo, urine, people’s spit, vomit etc on the street, how can anyone bring that in the house?!?!?! Each to his own I guess but I think Mexico can learn a thing or two from Asian culture in that aspect.
@MrTachyon3000
@MrTachyon3000 2 жыл бұрын
Some houses have all that stuff (urine, spit, vomic, and human excrement ) on their floors. Not to mention some people have fungi on their feet. It should be on a case by case basis. Asian countries could learn a thing or two if they lived in Mexico which was my case. Often times I see Asians outside wearing slippers; that would get you killed in the region in Mexico where I grew up. I'm referring about the terrain and the hazards with the insects and animals we had to deal with.

In Germany it's very common for the first question you ask upon entering someone's home to be "Should I take my shoes off?" or "Do you want me to take my shoes off?" Some people will say yes please and others will say no, it's alright. Also depends a lot on the context. If you're just hanging out with a friend then you'd usually take your shoes off as people here usually don't wear shoes at home. If it's a lawyer coming there or someone looking at the apartment or something else that is more professional in nature then it's often much more common for them not to be expected to take their shoes off. If you're having a party with let's say 20 people then it's also a lot more acceptable for people to keep on their shoes (I suppose partly also because you'll likely clean afterwards anyway). But in general people here don't wear shoes at home. In Italy, for example, people don't usually ask, they just come in with shoes and that's how it is there. People still don't usually wear shoes at home though, maybe slippers. In Sweden it would be rude to come in without taking of the shoes, makes sense though since they get a lot of snow so if you come in with shoes that are wet and full of snow then that's quite different from coming in with dry shoes. Obviously, I can't speak for the entirety of the countries I mentioned and there could also be regional differences in each one but those are the cultural differences I've noticed personally since I have some experience with each of these countries.

Yes you're correct Tah is a representative of Thailand. Normally in Korea and Japan it's common for people to wear slippers because the floor is cold, in fact I wear sandals in my house and I don't like to walk around bare foot. In Korea breakfast usually consists of rice, side dishes and fish. In the US all the Asians are clumped together as Asian Americans but as you know from traveling to Vietnam that each Asian country is different so in Asia each nationality is respected (like Japanese or Korean or Chinese etc.) which I like. Bowing is very common especially in Korea and Japan. Sometimes I prefer to bow because it's easier than shaking hands. Great video! really enjoyed it.

I personally believe many Asian cultures are more practical and based on what works best . while western cultures has a lot to do with consumption/consumerism 💸which has made its way into Mexico and parts of Latin America. Even the amount of carbs , sugar and bread we have in our foods is killing us . We have a lot to learn from older cultures.

This is a great video. I grew up in the U.S. but near the Mexican border, and I think it's interesting to compare some of the things you said. For example, we would also eat tortillas all of the time for snacking(and our snacks often involved a tortilla plus some other thing/things), and we also always wore shoes in the house. Thank you.

I don’t wear shoes inside the house. I wear socks or slippers inside the house because you bring dirt from the outside into the floor when you wear shoes. But I wear socks or slippers so my feet are warm so I don’t catch cold or get sick.

I grew up in California with Swedish parents, and taking shoes off inside the house is traditional. BUT, I prefer to wear shoes inside because it is more comfortable, warmer, and actually I feel more productive with my shoes too. I can work outside in the garden and go in and out without stopping (as long as I don't track soil or moisture in on my shoes).

As a Mexican in the USA, chilaquiles or enchiladas for breakfast is weird to me. I definitely grew up with eggs, potatoes, frijoles, salsa and tortillas. My mom would have a coffee and a cocha. Saludos Guerrerenses desde Florida.

There are a few specific behaviors of respect in Thai culture. Sitting on the floor might come from the rule that you cannot be higher as a monk and look downward on him. Also be respectfully to older people and sit lower. The other particular difference in Latin America is to get a salute from almost every stranger on the street or in the elevator. I just got reminded of that spending a week in El Salvador. Feels really good to get the attention, if only for a short moment. I remember that the sounds from eating food kind of turned me off in Asia. We are taught in the west to keep mouth closed while eating. In that way it is up to us to accept what is deep in a culture when visiting other places.

Lovely charming video. It's not easy having guests and not get on each other's nerves after a while! Cultural clashes or not. My whole life we wire shoes inside and rarely sat on floor, but in recent years I have had a couple Asian girlfriends and learned to appreciate taking shies off at the door. It makes sense, as we go everywhere with shoes, including public restrooms, so if you think about it itcreally is kind of dirty and even gross to track this all over the place. Best to keep the interior clean and sanitary in my view now. Also, eggs goes with anything

Actually, it's very common to not wear shoes inside in most of northern and Eastern Europe, with the exception of the UK and Ireland - shoes get super dirty and you definitely don't want them inside. However, if someone has a tiled house in the countryside, people will often tell you to wear shoes "downstairs", but take them off upstairs. For Italians, Spanish, Portuguese it's also more common to wear shoes inside. Dryer climate, tiled floors = easier to clean. I always find it difficult when British people wear shoes inside on carpet 😬

I'm from USA and I was also told to wear my shoes in the house or I would get sick. Colder cultures tend to wear shoes inside, some times "house shoes" after removing our "street shoes" upon entering. I've lived in Thailand and now I live in Mexico, so I have experienced both cultures 😎

The Asians I know... Japanese, Okinawans, Chinese, Koreans... in Hawaii take off shoes and slippers before entering the house. It is our custom. You don't want to bring anything dirty from the ground on the outside into the house. I can name many things that could be on the ground that you could have stepped on that you don't want on the floor of your house. In the old days, the Japanese and Okinawans used to sit on tatami mats on the floor of their houses. So they always have to push themselves up from the floor to stand up to walk. They had done this all their lives. It you think about it, it is a form of exercise for the legs and body performed many times a day... such that many elder Japanese and Okinawans do not require wheelchairs when they get really old. It is common to find Okinawans in Okinawa who live to 100 years or more.

Great topic Karen🤔. There is also a difference when cooking food, in my opinion, some Mexicans like to cook certain things like meat well done whereas I noticed some Asians may think that cooking well done makes the meat too dry not sure if it’s me or que ondas? 🤷🏻‍♂️ Also, some Asians serve The whole duck/ chicken (with the head and all) on the table whereas most Mexicans might think it’s not so appetizing😬 Que no?

I deliver packages, and I can tell the residents are Asian because I always see 5-10 pairs of shoes on the porch. Also, when I was in grade school our teachers would tell us to sit "Indian style"when they wanted us to sit on the floor. It just might be a connection with Asians and Mexicans, since most Mexicans have indigenous genes.

The spiciest dish I've ever eaten was a Thai Green Papaya Salad in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The lady preparing it at the street market asked, 'How many chiles do you want?' 'Just one', I replied... I watched her throw one innocent chile into the clay mortar and pestle, not realizing it was the ONLY mortar she was using to make everyone's orders that day. After the first bite, I was on 🔥🔥🔥my face melted off and I had steam coming out of my ears 😵 ...my salad had been crushed together with the residual chile oil of what seemed like 100 chiles from the previous orders! BOSS LEVEL HEAT for sure! 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ Lesson learned✌🏽
