How about a quick tour of Asia without leaving Mexico? One of the coolest things about Mexico City is its diversity so today we’re going to be exploring Mexico City’s Asian neighborhoods and hopefully speak to some asian-mexicans or asian immigrants and learn about their stories. Mexico is known for being a country that is welcoming to immigrants.
Mexico City is a global city and you’ll find people from all over the world here, and just like many other major cities, you’ll find pockets of cultural neighborhoods like el Barrio Chino (Chinatown), Pequeño Seúl (K Town), and Little Tokyo. And of course, we’re going to be trying the food during today’s video, yea, it would be cool if we find some fun asian-mexican fusion type of food and drinks.

Thank you for your video. When I lived in Mexico, I missed Asian cuisine so much that I had my friend bring me ingredients from Los Angeles when she visited me. I lived in Tampico, so it was not possible to get these items locally. I’m thinking seriously of moving to Mexico City in few years and am so happy to see that many ingredients can be acquired locally in those areas that you visited.

Cool video! Lived in Koreatown in L.A., interestingly enough i did meet a few Koreans raised in Argentina, and they sported the Argentine accent !! Btw , being referred to by a Mexican as a “Pocho” or “Pocha” is not that bad. All they are saying is we are not really Mexican like them. I realize that i’m 55 and my generation even as youngsters we had thicker skin than todays youth, hence we have never viewed the term Pocho as deragatory, or a big deal.

Hey. This is good and interesting. I have been to Barrio Chino near Museo de las Bellas Artes. The others are interesting. You should go into Roma Sur barrio where Little India is. Yes, there is a Little India in CDMX. I went there. I was speaking Spanish with my Vietnamese wife...we are both Americans from USA. One of the shopkeepers in Roma Sur approaches me and asks if I am Indian. I reply back about my Indian ancestry, in Spanish. He is surprised and starts speaking Spanish to me. I have acquired Spanish language skills. Anyway, I guess there is something about me that clues people in to my Indian influence. That shopkeeper was trying to speak Gujarati to me. For the record I was born in Chicago.

No me creen.

If you want to travel to Japan, you should know they’re having depopulation issues. The total fertility rate (TFR) has been below replacement rate (2.1 live births per woman) for several years. There was a population loss in Japan of over a half million last year - more deaths than live births with a TFR of just 1.3. China is in an even worse situation although that is less well known because it’s still a largely closed society. China has an even lower immigration rate than Japan and an abysmal 1.2 TFR - the legacy of One Child Policy which was disastrous in a country with widely available ultrasound & (technically illegal but, widely practiced) sex-selective abortion in a culture w/ a strong preference for male heirs - meaning too few women now exist to give birth to the next generation. A disaster. many analysts suggest China will be unable to continue existence as a unified country beyond the end of the decade. Auguste Comte said “Demography is Destiny.”

Yeah, I went to a few of these places..there are virtually no Asians in Mexico compared to America and Canada, comically so..the so called "comida China" looks extremely horrible, but it's ok, that's not it's strength. That is not Chinese food, remotely. I think the main Asian group in Mexico and specifically CDMX is the Japanese population--there's a strong visual arts component of both cultures and a mutual interest--there's a small but sizable number of Japanese people (mostly women) in CDMX (particularly in Coyoacan, is my impression), that go there to make their art careers because it's way easier than doing it in Japan. When I travelled in Japan, I also met several women who had lived there for several years. Good luck getting that device to work in China. There's a zillion different languages and people speak completely differently in real life than textbook Mandarin, even.
@EatBailaTravel
@EatBailaTravel 7 ай бұрын
I agree that the Chinese food in Mexico is generally pretty bad. There about 10,000 Koreans living in CDMX but I’m not sure how many Japanese. And about the device, I guess we’ll have to find out won’t we 😬

@NickHchaos 7 ай бұрын
@@EatBailaTravel is this Jenny? Who leaves the comments, or do both of you switch off? It’s ironic because the thing that best matches the actual complexity and depth of real Chinese and Asian food is real Oaxacan food, people do it best when they tap into their genuine roots and cultural diversity, but the blends or adapted for local tastes tend to not work so well..pretty much all Latin and Spanish Chinese food is atrocious in my experience.
@EatBailaTravel
@EatBailaTravel 7 ай бұрын
Have you ever tried Peruvian Chinese food? They call it chifa and it’s actually pretty great! The Chinese Peruvian community thrived gastronomically and achieved a blend that works with the Peruvian palate in Chinese style. And it’s Jenny on this thread but we do switch on and off 😁 we’ll start signing our comments lol
@NickHchaos
@NickHchaos 7 ай бұрын
@@EatBailaTravel Yes, I know there's more of a presence there--a friend of mine lived in Peru and actually married a part Chinese Peruvian woman (but they separated..). I've heard of the chifa, and I think Peruvian food itself is one of the better Latin cuisines due to the fresh fish and all that, but honestly, if you actually go to Asia or eat Chinese food in truly Chinese places (mostly along the west coast of North America), I think it will become apparent how limited these enclave-creations are. I'm married to a Chinese/Chinese-American woman who speaks much better Spanish than me actually, and she was in Peru and other places in the past, but I don't think she was too impressed by any of that stuff. I think also, to a greater degree than other cuisines, what you can get in restaurants vs what families make is very different, from my own experience as well.

No way!! Me too! I'm Mexican born, from Guerrero. I'm from Florida but have traveled all over the USA. Most people think I'm filipino. Even Asian people come up to me speaking in their languages. I tell them I'm Mexican, I only speak Eng and Spanish. I even did a DNA test---I'm 78.9% Native Mexican (indígena), 14% iberico, y nada de Asian!!! Among Mexicans, I'm just another one of us.

I think about 10,000 koreans live in Mexico City. Mexicans LOVE koreans! They love K-pop, korean tv dramas, korean food, and of course, korean people

Aw, I’m so sorry it felt that way. This was a quick tour and we had great conversations with these people off camera but it was difficult to get people to open up on camera. I wish we could have shown more of that, too.

Pocha is no dirty word. Una pocha is a Mexican American woman.

Yea it doesn’t have to be a dirty word. It depends on the tone the person is using it with. In our experience, people who’ve used that word have often meant it in a derogatory way. Lately we’ve been meeting others who’ve embraced the word and taken ownership in a more positive light as opposed to its original connotation. Which is cool!

Not much risk of that, there's not much money to be made there compared to the obvious choices (America, Canada, Australia, etc.), so most of the ones you're thinking of that think that way are not tempted by it.
