We continue our time in Mexico city and today we're talking about all the problems we've been having in the city. We had to switch hotels because the original one ran out of water. We've also been sick, had altitude sickness and stomach problems.
Everyone also asked us if we feel safe in Mexico City so throughout the course of the video we talk about safety and how to stay safe in Mexico City. As we discuss our problems we make our way through the Reforma area, giving a tour of our new hotel. We also make our way to Chapultepec Park. And later head to Monument to the Revolution and to a rooftop bar called Terraza Cha Cha Chá to check out the amazing views.

We live in Mexico and have driven to many parts that are considered dangerous, Morelia, Zacatecas, and Guanajuato. You are right use your smarts to stay safe, be aware of your surroundings. Mexico has so much to offer, it is beautiful and so are the people. Media up north definitely skew the facts of the entire country when bad things happen. Yes bad things happen, everywhere! I also live in Mexico City and I agree! US media only show the bad things about Mexico as if there were not problems or crimes in other big cities. I am sure that LA downtown, Philadelphia or Atlanta are more dangerous than Mexico City

The water problem they had in that part of the city was in the news, and it was that a well that supplies that area of the city was disturbed by a diesel leak that mixed with the well and lasted several days without water and It's something unusual but it happened and I think they fixed everything today!

Many poor people in Mexico City do not have water because they can't afford to have it trucked in. The rich downtown have water, mostly.

I have relatives in CDMX, they been having a water crisis for a long time, there's documentaries on it, pipes are cracking under the sinking city, they don't have a way to collect rain water and even the water they are importing from much lower elevation is prone to broken pipes, its a mess

Hi Anna & Trevor, another great video! Have been viewing all your uploads since you moved to the Dominican Republic a few years back. You inspired us to begin traveling more often as your videos are quite interesting and one can see how it really is in these countries you explore. We try to plan for 3 trips a year now since initially watching you folks on KZfaq. May I say I truly admire how well you create these videos together, so in sync. I to am from eastern Canada, Newfoundland. Having traveled to 6 countries since being inspired by you both, I admire your energy, strength, resilience and wonderful abilities to travel and work remotely. Great video! As a California resident, the water issue there is surprising to me. My state had been in a drought for decades yet never had a loss of running water. Now recent rains have ended that. I will never take this for granted. And thank you for your take on safety. I have been wanting to visit Mexico City but feared it was dangerous. Now I have more confidence in visiting. Thank you!

Hey glad you both are feeling better!! Just got back from a week myself, stayed in condesa, thankfully no water issues for us. I just wanted to also say how SAFE it really is/feels anyway. The people are charming, warm and I would love to go back again, perhaps stay in Polanco. Great videos guys!!

I appreciate the video. I'm heading to CDMX next month for the third time and have been monitoring the water issues - wasn't sure if it would reach hotels, but, obviously, it has. I'm staying in a hotel for the first time (always AirBnB in the past) and will definitely check ahead to see what the situation is with them.

Look into taking a small amount of apple cider vinegar (or ACV capsules) before going out eating street food. It helps to avoid food poisoning.

@DelightfulTravellers and if you do get food poisoning, you may already know this but take activated charcoal capsules asap. They are amazing at absorbing all the bad stuff.

April and May are the most dry and hot months of the year in Mexico and that's why there is less water 💦 but June it's when the rainy season starts and the end to that problem, the rainy season finish on November. Normally water it's not a problem but this year was among the most hot we seen in years.

The problem is that due to climate change the amount of rain per year decreases gradually. We could end becoming a Desert in the grand scheme of things.

“I feel safer here than I do in many places in the US.” Such a true statement. People always ask me about the DR and safety and I’m always following it up with “I feel safer there than I do in Columbus, let alone a place like New York. Safety is always more of a “you” problem meaning how do you keep yourself from being a victim.

Ana and Trevor love your videos and good tip on the water shortage in Mexico. If you are exploring the city, make sure you have some coins changes if you need to use the public restroom. Yes! You need to pay to get into the public restroom. If you happen to be in a safe area of Mexico city walking at night, you will find sometimes young singer with their band. As for the street food, you have to watch out. If you see a street vendor selling tacos, make sure that the person making the tacos is not the same person who is charging you. If you happen to be US citizen, I always check the US travel state gov which part of Mexico you can travel safely.

Mexico city is on my future cities to see, so far we have been to Cancun, Puerto Vallarta and Playa del Carmen. Every city we have been fine and even outside the tourist areas. Like you said, just use common sense- dont flash cash, jewlery, etc. The locals in the cities have been great

The guy who predicted the mortgage crisis in early 2000s also predicted the next big financial crises would be related to water...lack of it, who has it, who has ownership of water etc. Basically how it will be a commodity that is in demand.

In your opinion, how can we avoid food poisoning there? I know about the water, but what else would you suggest? I mean it sucks to get sick on a vacay!

Tough question but a good one. We've travelled a lot in the past 10 years and only encountered food poisoning a few times. Oddly enough it was in the past 2 years. Typically, we think it's unwashed salad but here in CDMX, we just aren't sure. I wish we had a better answer for you - Trevor

Day Zero for Mexico City is predicted by experts to be on June 26th, 2024 if there's no rain. That's when they run out of water for 22 million people. I would cut short a vacation for that unless you like covering uprisings bigger than the LA Riots.

The city was called Tenochtitlán, not to be confused with the Pyramids of Teotihuacán (where you should go!). The legend was that the Aztecs were told by their gods to build their city where they saw an eagle (the highest animal) fighting with a snake (the lowest animal). When they saw this, it was in the middle of a lake (the remnants are the Floating Gardens of Xochimilco). So they drained the lake! You will see the eagle and the snake on the Mexican flag.

I lived in Mexico City for seven years and commuted on the metro daily. Once, my wallet was stolen from my pocket at a metro station. That was once in seven years. Hardly a bad statistic. And that was the only problem regarding robbery I ever had. I know you guys are from Canada. But, in the US the media goes overboard in portraying almost every other country on earth as being too dangerous to visit. So, everyone believes the only way to stay safe is to vacation in your own country. The media take on Latin America in general is so different than the reality. People, don't get brainwashed!

I’d love to go to Mexico City some day. In my experience, food poisoning when you travel is sometimes a number of factors and not necessarily bad food. Your body’s exhausted from travel, maybe jet lagged, you’re not used to the local spices, and if you’re up high altitude sickness. It sucks and you’re never immune 😢

Do go out to Teotehaucan. The bus tales an hour. Some of the museums have free days. Altitude can kill you apetite. Only eat if you want to. .

All for constructive criticism but... in this video we literally went all over the city 'showing you things'. We create informative videos where we try to be helpful. In this case, we thought this water crisis was a big topic to talk about. We're not a walking / touring GoPro channel with music in the background. Nor will we ever be - Trevor
