My grandfather stormed Omaha Beach in Normandy France on D Day. He said the most terrifying gun in the German Arsenal was the MG42. He accounts on several occasions of seeing this gun cut people in half.

I believe this weapon was also referred to as “Hitler’s Buzzsaw” for obvious reasons. It was designed to have the effect of a shotgun blast 3:40 at over 500 yards out. It so feared the troops that a 20 minute film was produced saying the MG42’s “bark was worse than its bite,” which simply wasn’t true. It was however, one of the greatest machine gun in the history of war.

@@columbiawarmachine9795fascinating piece of machinery of that there is no doubt but I am just as in awe with the browning 50 caliber or M2 heavy machine gun effectively known as the Ma deuce. The Browning 50 cal has been in continual service for over 108 years. I don't think any other light arms can boast that length of service not even close. So yes for me it's a toss-up for the mg42 or the good old American made Ma deuce😮😅

My uncles faced this him on D-Day on Omaha Beach. In the late 80s my uncle Richard met the only surviving German assigned machine gunner on Omaha Beach. Frank Goeckel. According to my uncle, his first comment to him was. “You missed me”. After both of them laughed, they became friends until their deaths. What is haunting is that according to my uncle as well, Granz claimed that he alone fired 18,000 rounds that morning.

I've researched Goeckel and Severloh. Goeckel supposedly manned an MG08 and Severloh an MG42. Severloh was in an open MG position and I believe Goeckel too. Goeckel was positioned closer to the beach than Severloh. He was shot in the hand while retrieving food and was forced to retreat. Severloh retreated later and tossed his MG42 in the French countryside while being shot at by American troops. Shortly after, he became a POW.

From what I read, the thinking behind the MG-42's high rate of fire was because the timeframe the enemy was exposed and out of cover in a modern war is very short and the high rate of fire allowed for more hits on the enemy during the time the enemy is exposed.

I was the loader and spotter in a light MG squad during my time in the German Military in the early 90`s .Even if the MG 3 "talks a bit slower and has smaller teeth" as the MG42.The MG3 is still a bad ass weapon as well.But the cleaning is a pain in the ass 😅BTW great video,love it,thanks for bringing back memories

@@columbiawarmachine9795 Not to disrespect any soldiers of any country in any war but to say that that every soldier, dead or alive, was a hero is simply wrong, it sounds too much like "participation trophies" for kids just because they show up...the very ideology that is destroying athletics, sportsmanship and competetiveness in America. Besides, we all know that there have been a significant number of soldiers throughout history who have frozen in place, fled, surrendered, played dead or deserted in the heat of battle and even worse, there have been many traitors, turncoats, cowards and murderers representing many different armies from Mesopotamia to Pleiku and from Platea to Bull-run, if everyone was a hero then there were no hero's...

I asked my grandfather about that he explained it to me

The twin mg 42 mount is called Zwi-So-LA ( Zwillingssockellafette ) , Awesome Antiaircraft weapon , Brings back Fun memories ! I was a Flak soldier in the German Luftwaffe , We had lots of anti aircraft Training - shooting on an air Target ( A target pulled by an OV 10 Bronco ) . Salute from Germany !

I just think of D-day and those things being in an elevated position above allied troops storming the beach. Terrifying. Just yesterday, I was in the Verizon store getting a new phone and a 97 year old WWII vet walks in needing help with his phone. He said this world is confusing enough. Crazy.

The ROF of this thing is absolutely insane. Image the barrel life was very short. Those tracers are crazy because the belt is just tracers. Normally it is 5rds then one tracer between.

@PoormansMachineGun My Grandfather was in the Wehrmacht, he fought on D-Day. Then he was captured by the Britain Soldiers, he came to a farm near Leeds. The Family on this farm and my Grandfather became friends. They asked my Grandfather to live at the farm, but he went back to Germany, to my Grandmother. My Grandfather often told me about the war, with tears in his eyes as i was a child. Grandfather was not a Nazi-Criminal, for me he is a hero.

I was fortunate enough to train with the M1919, the M2, and the Mg-3 (in the Australian Army). The Mg-3 was by far my favourite machine gun. Unlike the 'walk-onto-target' method of firing the Browning's the Mg-3 was rifle-accurate. The Mg-3 had two bolt options - the 'infantry' bolt fired around 800 rounds per minute, the 'AA' bolt fired over 1,200 rounds per minute.

It's still being built and fielded today. It's known as the MG3. Chambered for 7.62 Nato, and depending on the the model, can have selectable rate of fire.

great video. These firearms were devastating in WW2. If you haven't already, I highly reccomend reading Until the Eyes Shut. It's a great first person account of a machine gunner (MG42) on the Eastern Front. He writes about the carnage these created against the Russian human wave attacks and brings some insight into the tactics they used when setting up the MG

Great! What a terrific piece of kit. 10 mins in could not believe you still had any ammo left. Always skeptical when something is called the best but this defiantly is the best I have seen on MG42 and doubt if anyone will better it. Loved the technical too. I was in the danish army in 1990-1992 as a combat soldier - I had the upgraded MG42 - the MG62 - It look the same but had small upgrades... 7.62mm instead of 7.92 and was a touch slower 900-1200 rounds pr min. And the MG62 are still used as tank mounted mashine guns. ☣☣☣⚠⚠
