My dad owned a few over the years. He absolutely loved them. Only thing quicker than the 0-60 was how quickly they rusted.

The best thing about Maestros was the roomy boot. Plenty of room to carry the tools you would need.

My Dad worked at Longbridge and we didn't live too far away so I saw plenty of them being ragged round the estate. When I hear people talk about rare Rovers and MG's I realise how lucky I was to see them on a daily basis. I didn't know these or the metro 16v were rare at all.

I had a 2.0i EFI one in moonraker blue. I found it was a bit of a handful, I went round a corner on a backroad, straight into a hedge. The car took off and landed on the roof. Was a strong car, though. I got out unhurt. I replaced it with a montego 2.0i, and although near enough same as a maestro, the montego seemed a lot more planted.

Awesome Sheesh that's some job, but hats off to you. I had a B reg 1985 non turbo and non efi 1600 one as my second car (after a Dolly Sprint - dad was a real petrol head) So I had 2 twin choke Webber's (that's 4 carbs). Hours of fun with my dad and timing light gun getting those set up.... Mayonnaise cleaned up, it was sold after a couple of years. Fantastic visibility all round in these - I miss that in today's cars. PS, mine was in black as well!

As a dedicated Essex Boy Racer through the 90s I religiously read Max Power and Fast Car. I especially loved when the guys would set up timing gear and also do group tests. Out of all the massively tuned Red Top Novas, Turbo,d Novas, 205 gti turbo'd, Escort and Fiesta RS Turbos, Golf gti supercharged and turbo charged, Renault 5 GT turbo, Astra GTEs tuned Red Top, supercharged, turbocharged LET engines, Cavalier and Calibra Turbo etc. And, of course the much rarer Montego and especially Maestro Turbos. Out of ALL those timing gear tests throughout the decade THE fastest accelerating cars were the Maestro Turbos! They beat EVERYTHING being the only cars to hit 60mph in under 6 seconds! Even on paper the quoted figures were very impressive but they were clearly very rapid motors! My mate had a Montego and I did have a drive but really struggled with it due to those crazy light pedals. I could barely drive the car and soon returned it to him but I'm sure I'd have gotten used to it in the end. I was a Vauxhall guy through n through back then ending up with a lovely red launch Astra GTE 16 valve Coscast Red Top and loved it to bits.

I'm not a car person, but stumbled upon this video. My parents bought me a formula 3 track day at thruxton many years ago (!) and the best part of the day was being driven round the track in one of these maestros by a presumably pro driver - absolutely terrifying for a 21 year old novice like me! the speed he went into the corners lives with me til this day. appreciate your skills & effort with a great car. cheers.

Thanks. Brought back some fond memories of the ones I owned in the 90's. Lost count of the hours I spent in that engine bay, wheel bearings they used to eat through and discs n' pads. Mine were dropped 2" with a kit from MotoBuild, not a massively exotic kit but made a big difference taking the torque steer. Anyways again, thanks.

I bought one of these for £50 (an MOT failure with a split axle) shortly after passing my driving test at 18 in the late 90’s. MG Maestro Turbo; one piece of Austin Rovers work that showed that you couldn’t polish a turd but you could roll it in glitter. Mum had one back in the day , dad got a good deal on it new, she hated it, i hated it too. The interior was crap and It handled like a bath tub and was only decent in a straight line (like the dual carriageway past Pitreavie). Constantly had electrical issues with the thing, starting and turbo issues after only a couple years ownership. Finally someone did her a favour by stealing it. Props to you for restoring one because they will be rare nowadays but they are rare for a reason, bad reasons unfortunately.

I've had a lot of fast Rovers over the years. Metro GTi's, Metro's with MGF VVC engines, 420 Turbos, but always wanted one of these. One popped up as a light restoration project at a dealer a few miles from where I lived. Knew the guy was more than a tad dodgy but went to see it anyway. Was on a Sunday and alarm bells rang when I was standing in his office and his phone rang with another "customer" interested in the Maestro. Went out and checked the car out and it seemed ok, but something was off. Noticed it had an EFi wiring loom, whereas the Turbo was carb. The kit was poorly fitting and the decals didn't look right. The BRG paint didn't look the right shade either. Turns out it was a replica he was trying to pass off as a genuine Turbo. Made my excuses and left but made sure everyone on forums etc knew about it incase anyone was duped by it. Ended up buying a Montego instead

Nice looking car, good to see such cars saved. Back in the 1990's when I was selling such cars, a mate and I went in a Maestro Turbo to collect a Porsche 944 we had just bought. On the way back we were pushing it on a bit, I was in front in the 944 my mate following in the Maestro Turbo. The 944 cornered with no fuss at speed, but I will never forget the look of fear in my rear view mirror on my mates face as he battled to keep up on the twisty stuff in the Maestro. The Maestro was quick in a line but scary on the twisty bits !

I had a Maestro as my second car, first was a Maxi (pre family owned) my Maestro wasn't MG just standard 1.6 but I loved it, at the time my dad had the Montego so it was a smaller version, really strange thing happened was that the temp gauge would read high and so the choke didn't kick in but then traveling the choke kicked in and game me a Mario style boost, I had it swapped out for a manual choke as no one could figure out what the problem was.. I love retro cars and I think more Car companies should start making these, same design but updated.

Great job restoring the car. The video brings back a lot of memories. I had a 1987 D reg MG Maestro 2.0 EFI in the mid 90's. It was the same colour as the one in the video. It was pretty quick for the time - I was able to easily beat the Nova 1.4 GSI fellow boy racers. But of course, it had the reputation as a granny wagon. It was pretty unreliable as well, the head gasket went followed by the engine itself. I also remember the terrible torque steer the car had even with the 2.0 engine, I can imagine it would be much worse with the turbo.

I had a Mk1 Metro Turbo back in the late 80's Silver over black A???MGE a Glasgow car originally. Living in Penrith i had the best playground and thrashed it round the lake district like id stolen it! Awesome car only let me down once on a very hot day when the turbo was so hot it was evaporating the fuel in the carb! but with 2 young kids the wife convinced me we needed a practical car....hangs head in shame...i bought a Triumph Acclaim, she was happier than me 😂😂😂

One beautiful car. A stark contrast to the super bland MGs about now. This is a proper MG.
